So much to discuss, this could be a 1hr video, but just trying to show you a quick authentic example.

If you search up the name you can find out who he was and where he may have died. My friend done it with his SS helmet and he visited the grave of the SS soldier and increased the value by 1000s

In France,a old collector take a ss cap..with the skull of the owner. He was a 20 years old ss decapited in 1945 and he returned the skull inside the tomb (who was checked and without skull first). Here (but in french). kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5_Id2Rnpc9oia8 In 44..45..german helmet..specially ss helmets were like scalp to us soldiers..a lot were shoot in the head with rhe helmet, they removed the bloody liner with a bayonet and keep the shells as trophy. My first helmet was maybe a trophy too...or a souvenir...a bullet hole and no interne liner (without leather..so strange..it's difficult to remove just one liner),just external alu liner with chinstrap..and trashed in a car junkyard by someone long after the war.

Very nice helmet. I just checked the helmet database, and the ET M40 helmets batch numbers 704 - 725 are all single decal SS helmets. Looks like that's a nice dark pea green paint, very cool. I myself have a late ET M42 stamped ckl, single decal SS in apple green.

Just brought one of these to the Max show, my grandfather brought it back with him. It's in excellent shape, was offered $7500 for it, was told it was worth upwards of 10k!!

As a collector of all ww2 helmets for the past 30 years I was fortunate enough to be part of the era where if it looked genuine "it was" n the repros were unmistakable repros . Sad for the person who will enter this hobby now n what b.s they will encounter to obtain the real deal ,lm just sad

Yeas, same with coins, sabers and video games...now it demand a lot of knowledge and stuf (hd optic to check, metal acid test..) to know if that’s legit or not. I found my first german helmets when I was a child,on a junkyard inside a old 60s cars, probably the familly of a soldier who tried to erased the past.

Great video and helmet. You mentioned a book on SS decals, can you tell me the name of that book? Does that book show the difference between original and fake SS decals and how to spot them? Thanks.

well it certainly has an authentic look.. BUT that decal is the 'chubby left' decal. A somewhat unknown today but very well crafted repro that came from Czechoslovakia in the early 80's. It was made using old techniques with period equipment however the left rune was always much thicker (hence why its mostly been removed here) They didn't manage to work out how to make it two layer as they were back in the day so you have a single layer decal with metallic pulver that comes off in big chips and chunks. They got the gold patina down well though!

This sure looks like the real deal! I would love to own it as well, however, I will never pay the prices they are asking for this stuff. People that own it, are dying to show it off. So, I can see for free, but own very little. A couple of badges is all and they are Navy Badges.

Looking at this helmet and looking at the condition of the liner I can tell you the individual that was wearing it is definitely dead , the chin strap had been cut in order to remove it from the dead soldier and the inside of the liner is rotted out due to human blood . This tends to happen with the inside liners of these helmets , the sheepskin or goat skin that they used for the liners rotted out whenever human blood has been on it for too long . I have a m40 et62 lot number 5152 double decal waffen SS helmet and has been documented in the Brian ice book of German steelhelms volume 1 through 10 . I would highly recommend that you have that helmet appraised and find out about the soldier that wore it and get his bio , this will greatly raise the price of your helmet .😉👍✌️

So.no paint under decal? They were applayed directly on steal? Probably, because on M35,M40 they are really strongly resistant. (I have one M35 with 3 paints layers, apple green..dark graphit and post war yellow, with acetone, terebenthine pure gemme..step by step..slowly,the apple green and heer decals were almost intact. Same with some rusted shells without any visible paint or decal first I found in Pologne long ago. Sadly some were trashed as rusty stuff back then...maybe they were ss..or double ss helmet (more commun in Ukraine,Poland,Russia). I will have just M35 ddecals heer..luft..ss..and kriegsmarine. Also a prussian helmet ww1 with a bone crusher air force cap (So..same as Schultz..Klink..Hogan from Hogans heroes..and 7ieme compagnie funny movies). Also daggers..sabers.germans...russians..and polish rogatywka.. sabers..cap..flag. In the last ten years the price started to becomes really expensive...it's a good way to protect money in the futur crisis.

Research all parts, numbers, paint and closely examine the details of the decal. There were only a few styles of decal specific to each helmet manufacturer.

I would rather have a helmet that showed a lot of wear and tear than one that looks like it is fresh from the factory.

You close your eyes ,swipe your finger over where the decal is and if you can not feel it , it's real..from the looks and the 40 year story yours is real..if it was me I would put a new head liner in it or a good used one..and clean it with damp cloth and put some armorall on it to seal it, it's yours now, make it so you can show it and wear it and dont sell it for the next 50 years, screw the collectors, and do the research on the dudes name in it.

I question the painted name on the inner rear flange. Many restored helmets had the same concept added. But otherwise a nice piece. The rust looks recent…but still a coveted piece.
