Its sad the interiors were gutted, but I understand why. They could always replicate the interiors.

I've read that she was towed to Istanbul to have the asbestos removed. Her interiors were gutted and sold in the 1980s.

Yes she was towed there for asbestos removal, my visit was prior to this and the interior although stripped of furniture was otherwise intact. I was particularly impressed by the condition of the carpeting, she was looked after very well during her layup in Newport News.

@@limey587 I used to see her every day when I was stationed in Norfolk, VA. she was kept up, maintenance was done. There were occasional articles in the paper about rumours that she would be re-activated. Her true homeport was Norfolk and 20,000 people (shore staff, etc.) lost their jobs when she was retired.

Such a tragic story for this beautiful ship .The Conservancy still asking for donations.

I was on the first island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel the dreary, drizzling morning the reigning Queen of the Atlantic left her home waters of Hampton Roads the last time behind an ocean-going tug on her way to Turkey to be 're-born' which never happened.

Once a proud and majestic liner, sadly today neglected and falling on hard times. There was another American liner ( a sister ship to the UNITED STATES?) that was sold to Chandris Lines and became the "AUSTRALIS" which I remember seeing many times in Sydney NSW. I think it ended up aground on a reef in the Canary Islands and the wreck broke up over the years?
@chillingwolf7 күн бұрын
When ss America was laid up after service with the Greek line and sold numerous times in the 80s she was sold in 93 and was been towed to tyiland for conversion to hotel and the ropes broke during a storm and she rang aground in the canary Island fortventura and then for the next 20 years was slowly taken apart by the ocean

Beautifully shot. Thank you for posting this. Was she at Tuzla, which is near Istanbul or actually at Istanbul in this footage?
@limey5875 күн бұрын
Don't know the exact location, she was anchored out in a bay. I remember that we had to take a cab ride from Istanbul to a dock and then a charter boat to the ship. We had previously studied plans of the ship and armed ourselves with flashlights to find our way around.

@@limey587 Fantastic, thank you. I think she was at Tuzla, not far from the shipyards there. Incredible that she didn't have a watchman guarding her and very cool that you got on board. I did something similar with the former AMERICA in Greece in October of 1992. My video skills were poor at the time, much to my regret but I was so happy to have gotten aboard. Especially love your footage on the port side with the SSUS brilliantly lit. Thanks again.

@@midshipcinema Although there were no security guards we ran into a group of Norwegian engineers who were rather grumpy with us until we introduced the leader of our group who was personal friends with one of the people behind the purchase. We were fortunate that they were there as otherwise the shell doors on the side would have been secured.

There are more delays.Hopefully this move will see more hurdles and the iconic liner might yet get saved.!

@barryvincentredmond3973 I compelty agree what's interesting is what the coast Guard have highlighted in regards to asbestos as I always thought it was all removed when she was in Ukraine, And the compromised tanks and oil,
@sparkplug10183 күн бұрын
@@barryvincentredmond3973 At this point it's either a reef or a date with the breakers, and we can toast her every time we open a beer. Personally I prefer option one. Because there is no way the funding to entirely rebuild the interior plus the required dry docking is ever going to materialize at this point.
