Nice animation, but Okaloosa County probably won't let the SS United States capsize if they actually end up scuttling it. They want it to be an artificial reef which tourists can actually dive to, and a sideways ship would be disorientating for divers visiting the reef. Remember, the nearby USS Oriskany was also turned into a reef in an upright position to make her wreck accessible to divers.

@Hibernicus19686 күн бұрын
Honestly this is probably the best fate for the ship now (though hopefully they could sink it upright). At least it will be serving a useful role in nature, and divers can still visit it. It would have been nice if she had could have been put back into service in some capacity, or turned into a floating hotel like the R.M.S. _Queen Mary,_ but all the various plans to do something with the ship over the decades have come to naught for the same reason: none of them were economically viable. At this point, the ship has deteriorated so badly that the cost of simply repairing all the damage would be mind-numbing. And that's before you get into the additional expense of fitting out her interior to look as she did when she was in service -- and all those atomic era furnishings would have be made from scratch today. I just can't see it ever happening. Better to see her turned into a reef than to sit at dock, rusting away, until finally corrosion breaches the hull below the waterline, she sinks at her moorings, and they decide to haul what's left of her away to a scrapyard.

@@sideburngthepeacebringer27 Not pointless at all The top of the wreck must be at least 30 feet underwater Assuming they will sink her upright which makes for the best possible wrack dive site then removing the funnels and the mast allows for her to be sunk in shallow enough water so that the topside superstructure (the white part) is within depth of your typical sport diver which is less than 100 feet otherwise the bridge level itself would probably be at 100 feet if not deeper

Don't destroy this historic ship! It's part of American history!
@launcesmechanist957818 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, history is not as relevant to some as it once was. If a group, state, government, invests enough money into something and doesn't see a return on it swiftly enough, it will be removed from 'protected' status and would be abandoned, destroyed, or sunk. One needs only look at the sorry shape some of our Museum ships are in to get the horrifying picture that these days people just don't give a damn about their nation's history. You need to fight, claw, shout and battle your way to be heard and present a completely viable case for a ship like the United States to be saved, invested in, and treated with the same dignity and respect as say, the USS Texas, for example. One notable example of a museum ship being lost was the pre-Dreadnought USS Oregon which was made a museum ship after WWI but at the outbreak of WWII was turned into an ammunition hulk stationed off Guam before being towed to Japan and scrapped there because the Navy couldn't tow her back to the US and any funds to keep her as a museum ship had been diverted to the war effort.

Slap a paint job on the outside and redo what you can slowly on the inside. Where but philly should this ship be.
