Thank you very much Spencer for explaining something that nobody has bothered to do before.👍👋

Spencer, you raise such an important point about normalization of deviance. As a future (hopefully not too future!) student pilot, learning lessons like these is very important to me.

Great series and tips! The old safety advice saying "familarity breeds contempt" still applies.

Another great video. These videos make me want aerobatic instruction!

There isn’t a lot of good information out there for pilots interested and getting into tail wheel and aerobatics. Your videos are a godsend for good practice and information.

Excellent presentation! I'm only 2mins 50secs into it, but you mentioned the maneuver was the 'slow roll', yet it's being executed with full aileron deflection. Is the maneuver you're referring to just an aileron roll then? I understand there are pitch concerns with both, but I wanted to see if you were aware that you were calling it a slow roll early on. Again, very nice work either way and as somsone who flies in a wide range of conditions, often with external pressure to complete the flight, the concept of normalization of deviance is absolutely worth a look. I've finished a few flights where I've felt icky about a couple of decisions. Even though it all worked out with no issues each time, I knew I hadn't executed properly, and if I allowed those standards to continue to drop, I'd soon be heading into the territory which I think you're about to cover in this video.

An aileron roll is a roll on a ballistic flight path done with only ailerons thus no attempt is made to maintain altitude nor heading during the roll. A slow roll is done at any amount of aileron deflection along with use of rudder and elevator to maintain heading and altitude. You can perform a slow roll at painfully slow roll rates and work very hard to maintain altitude and heading with judicious use of rudder and elevator or you can do it with full aileron getting maximum roll rate which still requires judicious use of rudder and elevator with the inputs occurring more rapidly. I don't know who named this particular roll the "slow roll", and it is indeed a misnomer; however, that's what it's called and has little to do with roll rate. Another mystery of the universe for mankind to solve. :-)
