It's Samsung vs. Western Digital... which would you chose?
@shadowrainexia
@shadowrainexia 5 жыл бұрын
ADATA SX8200 Pro is what I would choose. Or shall I say what I have already chosen. Real world, gaming and benchmark performance is negligible on all 3 except that the ADATA has a lead in TBW by 60TB on the 1TB drive. And the price difference in my country is around 33% less vs the 2 leading drives.

Western digital, since it is multilayer instead of triple layer, so will not loose performance at the same rate, when it is filled with data. i know it is not 4x layers, but it is still a lot to go from 2x layers to 3x layers

On Amazon WD 1TB is now $135 and the Evo Plus 1TB is now $190. Pretty sure I won't be able to see the slightest difference when gaming between the two, but will certainly see the $55 difference in my bank.

Contrary to what the video says, Random 4K, even being synthetic testing, is more important for normal use than sequential moving speeds. So the 970 EVO Plus random read speed being around double that of the WD Black means it will be noticeably better for normal use, if you are looking at things closely.

I choose the WD based on a few things. It has the capacity to operate for both leisure and business needs, I like the fact there' an option [Gaming] that will not allow the drive to save power... I'm a music producer and power is king in the studio. Latency causes complications. I own a Mac late 2013 desktop computer and an SSD will definitely help my workflow, and finally the Samsung 970 EVO Plus is not compatible to my Mac, I'm impressed the WD Black is slightly behind the "Pro" version of Samsung. [PS. I maxed out my RAM as well]

In 2020 I’ve gone with Western Digital Black mainly because of price and sales I’ve seen. Bought a 500GB for $65 and just recently a 1TB for $115. 500GB is my OS boot and my 1TB my game library folder (which was on a 5400rpm HDD)

I chose the WD Black 1TB NVME for my new build. It's over $40 cheaper at this time compared to the 970 EVO Plus from Samsung, for the same amount of storage and performance that is so similar that the average user is never going to see any real tangible difference in performance between the two. It also has over 250 5-egg reviews at this point. I paid $139.99 for it at the time, which was $10 off it's usual price of $149.99. The 1TB EVO Plus is still $190 on Newegg. I've used WD drives for decades now and have never had any issues with them, I trust their reliability and their warranty has always been great. That price difference is too big to ignore. Newegg states that these read/write speeds are exclusive to WD's drives that are 1TB or higher..so I'm not sure what the performance of their 500GB drives are. Either way, happy with my purchase. This NVME drive is lightning fast and does everything I need it too without any issues, including thermals. It's been a great drive and deserving of the 5-egg reviews it's getting on Newegg.

the evo plus runs hot... I have 2 of them and also the hynix p31 gold... I wouldnt recommend the evo plus in a laptop under any circumstances..too small a space, no heatsink and too hot and uses too much power... in a desktop with air circulation,a decent heatsink can manage temps..I also found they couldnt reach the claimed speeds 3280/3050 for me on eithe evo plus 500gb... the hynix was sweet, ran much cooler, almost same speeds but just about double the read iops..sadly the hynix is not compatible with mac so i wont be keeping mine.

When performance is so similar, especially for storage other criterias not covered in the video become much more important: Temperatur, Power consumption, Reliablility of the cache and flash as well as longelivity of the controller. In that regard do we have any useful information about this? Or would this be a No-Go, since then one brand would get kicked out?
@blackisblack22
@blackisblack22 5 жыл бұрын
The reason why I bought EVO Plus is because I found out that WD gets too hot and do throttling to not melt. The fall in performance is dramatic. I do not remember the link to share to you.

@@blackisblack22 That is interesting. In the test i found the Black 750SN was one of the most efficient drives while also beeing on of the fastes at workloard: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-black-sn750-ssd,5957-2.html Scroling down to the last Pictures. I would have assumed that it is getting not as hot as the evo. I dont know. Funnily enough the WD black has still a lot more powerconsumption when idle: www.anandtech.com/show/13760/the-western-digital-wd-black-sn750-ssd-review/9 Yet, this is only in ranges of 0 - 0.6 watt. So i dont know what causes more degradition, havin efficient workloads or efficient idling power. This is by the way the same problem that this study is pointing at: 0b4af6cdc2f0c5998459-c0245c5c937c5dedcca3f1764ecc9b2f.r43.cf2.rackcdn.com/23105-fast16-papers-schroeder.pdf And quess what: In terms of CPU binning and overclocking the problem seems also be heavily related to Electromigration and Charge trapping, but we get no fucking info on that how modern hardware deals with this core-problem.

Ridiculous how all these reviews always magically ignore the most important stat for humans (you know the people buying these drives), which is random read time, aka the times it takes for apps to load up and be usable by the user. I've been searching the web far and wide and it's all the same marketing BS sequential reads and write, which have a place, but are of little value if you don't have a workstation and transfer huge data repeatedly. As a computer programmer I want to know how long will I have to wait less for the IDE to fire up, or for the operative system to boot completely. Transferring files at a quintillion MB/s is irrelevant.

This video is missing out the most important for me: Sustained write speed after cache runs out. According to a tom's hardware review, the 1TB Samsung 970P will drop to around 850MB/s after writing around 30GB of sequential data as it runs out of cache and starts to write directly to the TLC flash and I was wondering how WD SN750, which's also TLC, would behave in this respect. On the Intel 660p which is QLC, for example, the speeds will drop to lower than a mechanical hard drive after running out of cache.

They say nickel will improve thermals meaning whatever's used by everyone else is DEFINITELY NOT COPPER OR ALUMINUM because nickel is not exactly the best heat conductor. Here's my guess, STEEL! If anyone has any better estimated suggestions reply here. I'm just glad any company improved SSD controller thermals at all, because we all know that nand cells love heat and the controllers hate it, so this is a big step up for NAND-KIND. This means we don't really need a heatsink since nand and nickel are a good conbination for maintaining heat in general, it can stay up to 70c without much worry. Even if you use a heatsink, nickel can transfer heat faster.

@PCGamesN , thank you for your review! Nice job & well explained! I've a doubt, and I hope you can help me! I'm gona buy a Asus ROG Strix SCAR Edition laptop soon, and I want to replace it's original 256GB SSD M.2 PCIEG3x4 NVME by a SSD NVME 1TB - but not sure what SSD I should buy! My main concern is the SSD temperature! High temperature in an SSD laptop is not good, and is not possible to use heatsink in it (there is no space)! In your experience, what should be the best SSD (of 1TB) to be used in a laptop? Thank you. Hug.

I just bought the ADATA SX8200 Pro it was only visible in the bios as a drive but not in windows when I booted up on my old 960 evo 1tb, its not even there when I try to install windows 10 clean installation on it.. it seems like the software is bad or som Thing? I use gigabyte gaming 7 z370 motherbord and I have tride alle 3 x4 m.2 slots.. nothing.. I have samsung 960 evo and samsung 850 pro and evo and even a WD Red HD, non of them have ever failed to just work as I expected. So just right now I ordre a Samsung 970 plus and I am going to returen the ADATA SX8200 Pro tomorrow. Sad that I will have to pay more, but I trust Samsung to just work! :)

It might just be that it's not activated in Windows. Right click on the Windows logo in the bottom left of the desktop when you've booted up. Click on Disk Management in the menu that pops up. You might then see your Adata drive in there but blacked out. If it is, right click on it and you will have the option to create new simple volume. Fingers crossed it pops up and becomes usable.

Doesn't the MLC on the Samsung mean that it has a higher endurance rating than the WD, which uses a TLC controller? I want to support Western Digital instead of Samsung but I also need the product that has great speed at a high endurance rating.

All SSD's today are MOSTLY TLC's. THERE ARE NO MLC, SLC SSD's available for just going to a shop and getting it out of the shelf. There are QLC's too like Intel 660p, endurance rating on these are very very bad. TLC's do a good job, SLC's and MLC's are available for the Entreprise Market. So much that a 3.5 Inch SLC SSD can cost 1000$ and only be 80GB.

The Samsung 970 EVO Plus has a 3-yr warranty, the Western Digital SN750 has a 5-yr warranty, I am sure that will influence some buyer's decision. The thing with Samsung warranty is that they take forever to RMA an SSD that has failed or gone defective. I had a Samsung 960 Pro and it failed after 4 yrs (their Pro line has 5-yr warranty), and it's been 2 months and still waiting for a replacement.

eBay is kind of sketchy, but it depends on what you think is best. If it's used, it may be on its last strand, and the owner is trying to get a quick buck out of it. If it's new, that is one heck of a deal!
