There are plenty of NVMe SSD storage options when it comes to building a PC or upgrading your hardware for gaming, video editing, or running programs, but when you’ve decided on a DIY Thunderbolt or USB-C enclosure, does the SSD speed really matter? What is the best NVMe M.2 SSD for the money? I compare the 1TB Samsung 970 EVO plus with the 1TB Western Digital SN750 NVMe SSD.
In addition to this comparison I talk about some of the differences between PCIe Gen 4 and PCIe Gen 3 SSDs and how choosing the right one for your enclosure would likely give you the same results even with advertised higher Read and Write speeds, and save you money by choosing the SSD that best fits what your DIY enclosure is capable of.

@@KevinRossRN Transferred multiple ISO files (total 25GB) from the internal SSD to 1TB SN750 at about 2GB/s and later ran the drive as a boot drive. Seems to have worked just fine. Both volumes were encrypted. The 1TB SN750 is a drive manufactured in 2019 with an older firmware which I received through RMA. Guess it has been sitting on the shelf since.

Yeah I’ve been hearing from the community that some of these SSDs either have older firmware, which usually needs a Windows device to update it, unfortunately, and I’ve also heard that there may be a component that was used in the newer chips that are also causing a slow down, but I don’t have a solid confirmation on that.

Western Digital's SSD tool box didn't seem to show any new firmware available and rather stated that the firmware was up to date (102000WD). Alright you beautiful humans. I often get asked about what the fastest SSD is when it comes to your DIY enclosures, and so I thought I’d answer your questions with some context and a comparison. The short of it is, it really depends, but the fastest advertised read and write speeds don’t always translate to these enclosures.

Hey Kevin, your videos has been extremely helpful. I have SN750 and I have been using with my M1 MacBook Air for a while now. Now as a Mac user, I know there is no dedicated application to update the firmware on SN750. I am curious wether keeping the firmware up-to-date could improve performance of the drive with the MacBook. I would very much like to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you!
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Glad to have you here. As far as firmware, you’re correct in that many SSD manufacturers have no, or a limited upgrade path on MacOS without a pretty extensive workaround. I believe crucial and OWC still have upgrade paths. You can check your firmware in system report on the Mac and I confirmed the firmware was up to date on both SSDs as I know that with Samsung others have said the firmware revision had been an issue. It also comes down to how often firmware is really updated, which isn’t often (typically). There’s an app called Sensei that I’ve been testing and it offers Trim options as well as assessing disk health and optimizing performance. I regularly move items off of my SSDs and clean things up in there, reformat and assess disk health from time to time, but I use these particular SSDs daily on multiple projects and so far, I haven’t noticed any slow downs. But yes, I agree it’s a pain to have to try and update this with a work around or having access to a PC.

@@KevinRossRN True. I guess, it is what it is. Now, I am not sure if you are aware of this. I have discovered that a mere encryption could have a considerable affect on the read and write speeds of an NVMe which could be both good and bad depending on how you see it. I ran amorphous disk mark on an encrypted APFS volume and noticed a 45% bump in SEQ1MQD8 write speed and 20% decrease in SEQ1MQD1 read.

They were titled "Get Up to 67% Faster External Drive Performance With Your M1 Mac!" and the follow up article titled "More Ways to Get Faster External Drive Speed With Your M1 Mac". Did you also read these? If so, what do you think of their findings?EDIT: What's that logo on your cap?

Hi Robert, thanks so much! I did see these articles and did do a video that was similar to these findings. I had tested direct connect SSDs to the Mac mini and MBA, and then ran tests with a USB-C display as well as adding in a thunderbolt dock where I was able to run simultaneous tasks to increase the throughput. One of those tests I was getting pretty close to the internal SSD speeds. Not sure if you saw it, but these M1s are a tricky bunch with that communication protocol.

For the money I’d say SN750, but I know there are often deals. It’s just that the 850 won’t really be fully utilized in this setup. I like that Acasis enclosure because it’s USB4 so it can fall back to 3.1 Gen 2 if it has to for a USB-C device, whereas the Fledging is TB3 only, however I still use both. Acasis is claiming, that those certain SSDs, you are testing here, are NOT recommended with their enclosure. I recently updated this with the 980PRO which works well in the Acasis, but here’s the thing. Since this video came out, I believe Acasis either had to use different components since mine was manufactured, but WD also had some manufacturing issues last year and these changes may have caused issues with the communication protocol, and the WD SN750s I have were manufactured before these issues, BUT I also can’t confirm this firsthand because I don’t have a new SN750. However, my most recent video from the other day was edited on the 970 EVO Plus without any issues. This wave link has been popular among the community: amzn.to/3CFxDy8 Orico and Sabrent as well.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
So from what it sounds like friend is that you’ve got a 3.1 Gen 2, correct? If that’s the case, then you would be better served with a SSD that’s reading/writing at around 1,000MB/s because that’s what your throughput is going to get you. If you were to get an SSD that’s higher on R/W, but at the same price, then it might be fine, especially if you upgrade the enclosure some day to thunderbolt 3 or USB4.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. So I’m that test on the motherboard, you’re going to get that 3,000MB/s, but the enclosure will be 10Gbps, so you’re looking at an average of around 950-960MB/s in that particular enclosure.

Hi Kevin, watched all your videos about T3 /USB 4 enclosures, SSD suggestions, all of that.... following every single piece of advice or step you have given regarding the best enclosure/SSD etc. Well, just received the Acasis and WD Black 750, and no matter what I do, no matter what cable I use ( the one that comes with the enclosure, or even a genuine apple one) I can't get W/R speed more than 700, no matter what!!! Not sure what is wrong and how some people get the extreme speed, but not me, not my air m1 with BigSur 11.5.1.... I am annoyed and a little angry with myself should cut down the KZbin videos a little bit :))

Which benchmark are you testing on and have you also tried some large file/folder transfers? Also, when you formatted did you happens to try APFS encrypted vs non-encrypted? Also, in system report on the about my Mac…left side you’ll see NVMe express. Click on that and then go over to find the WD drive and then look and see what revision/firmware it shows. What’s the value there?

Oh boy, the pressure is on now 😬 Speaking the truth is easy, but there are also so many nuances in tech that just really change the narrative sometimes. A couple of things that I know based on my own use and quite a bit of research: 1. From my findings it seems that the SN750 plays pretty well with the chip on this board in the Acasis enclosure, and on quite a few others. 2. You’re rocking the same firmware that as am, so that’s a check. 3. Blackmagic for me is a hit or miss benchmark, but we’re splitting hairs as it should be somewhat representative and comparable to others. 4. A problem with the enclosure? Maybe, but it’s hard to say without testing another SSD. 5. Here’s a possible scenario that you could be experiencing. Possible… So as I said in this video Samsung is better when it comes to what hardware they use in their products. WD is good as well, however I went down a rabbit hole where a handful of folks may have gotten a SN750 with some slightly different components. Now I’m my research I’ve also seen where some of these components have been known to slow down the performance on these SSDs. I’d have to dig up my findings, but this is a possibility since manufacturers are having all sorts of issues with manufacturing and supply. Let’s hope this isn’t the case though with the SN750 because although you won’t appreciate the full advertised speed because it’s external and on the M1 I can certainly depend on a write speed well above 700 in these enclosures. Any chance you have another device/computer for testing? A long shot, but figured I’d ask.

Typically you’d be fine if you’re loading the game, and depending on what you’re playing, but in a laptop heatsinks may be necessary if the CPU and graphics card are able to have things load faster. Those are the real bottlenecks. I’d go 970EVO plus if you can, but have you done your own testing of how fast your current SSD is reading and writing?

Due to my Data volume I transfer yearly Data to my G-DRIVE with Thunderbolt 4TB and backing it up with the Carbon copy cloner to LaCie 6TB Thunderbolt. My iMAC also will backup by Time Machine automatically. I plan to buy a storage system to transfer my data from my SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD to and start work on my data off the iMAC. also I am looking for backup RAID system. Maybe you can advice me better workflow system and I will appreciate it.
