Standard Sata HDD's and SSD's can come in a 2.5" and 3.5" drive size. The M.2 SSD standard has 2 drive types. #1 is the NVME M.2 : #2 is the Sata M.2. Both M.2 drive types are the same size and shape. The M.2 Standard has 3 types of sockets. The M-Key socket for NVME M.2's , The B-Key Socket for Sata M.2's and a combined M + B key Socket. The M-Key only socket will only work with the NVME M.2's. The B-Key only socket will only work with the Sata M.2's. The Combined M + B key socket will work with either NVME or Sata M.2's. Sata M.2's are controlled by your systems Sata Controller chip like any other Sata based devices. The NVME M.2 is controlled by the PCIE controller chip. So A Sata HDD and Sata SSD both are controlled by the same Sata chip , what makes the SSD's faster then HDD's is the technology the hardware is based upon. HDD's use electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage " Arm " - you can say HDD's are the Records of computers. The HDD's platter is the counterpart to the Vinyl records and the Arms are the counterparts to the Needles. If the HDD has 3 x platters then there are 3 x arms one per platter. SSD's use Memory chips in place of the Platters / Arms.
