Just want to say I was one of those retro active payments yet when I contacted social security I was told that BY LAW I could NOT receive a check for the full amount, that I would be getting payments divided into 4 payments every 6 months I would be getting an extra amount this was supposed to be AFTER my lawyer was paid. So I did get the amounts as they said but in December I would then get a lump sum. I didn't get those funds so I contacted Social security I was then told that they took that final payment and paid my attorney's fees So either my lawyer double billed or SSA lied to me about where the final payment would go. So with this diatribe is a warning IF you do take the lump sum make sure you get a letter or notice from SSA detailing what funds are given how and when they are given. I got ripped off because they didn't follow through. I hope this helps . Be careful with SSA and get EVERYTHING in writing!

You're actually right about the room. Some payment somewhat and aint always this one time thing. Hey, Hey, it took me 5 years to get my social security. I and that were 2 lots of texts cause they told me they owed me too much and it couldn't send me one and I'm some checked at once, and that's to split my payments up into 2, and that's what they did.

I'm so sorry. They treat SSI recipients like second class citizens and infantalize them. Many don't realize many have to resort to drawing because of a myriad of valid reasons. Being unable to return to work for physical or mental health issues that are documented and valid. turned down for SSDI year after year after decades of paying into the system. They say we can't have a husband or wife without reducing benefits. I mean, come on, people ! I think the 10 years of marriage rule to collect 1/2 your ex's SS. What if you had children with them and were married for 5 years ? Women ( and Men ) should be able to claim them if they shared custody. Social Security needs reform and protests. We are a very large community.

I had to wait over 2 years to collect ssdi and i did receive a large check for all my back pay for all the time i was waiting for ssdi. Oh wait. So if we wait until at least 6 months after age 62 if we want to collect ssi early? I won't be doing that but good to know.
