Circle cutting jig that rotates on its own axis like the moon

The router body operates like the relationship between the moon and the earth, always facing the same direction.
Therefore, the power cord and dust collection hose do not become entangled, and circle cutting can be performed smartly.
In addition, the router can cut a maximum of 300 mm or more despite its small size and high storage capacity.

Great build. That is similar to the one that Marius Hornberger made a couple years ago. All circle jigs should be made like this.

brilliant, for non-critical circular cuts. I'll stick to a single rotator. On a side note, you mean quite the opposite from "like the moon"; the moon actually rotates just -so- it only faces the center of rotation with one side, this method makes the router -not- rotate.

Finally made one after seeing this over a year ago and adding it to my "to make" playlist. Made it out of plexiglass (which was a mistake with hindsight) and using a trammel arm for larger circles (which is removable and works out well).

A nice build but it still leaves a hole in the disc, and a hole saw could cut out a circle for you, but it is a nice gadget.

The start hole is the problem, you need something to line up the router with the template and ensure the bit is at the right location before the bit hits the wood. I can easily see you getting a slight off spot because there's no way to align things before you start routing.

Good way to make a circle cutting jig less accurate

@@lohikarhu734 a normal circle cutting jig revolves around a single point, usually a screw or a pin. The tolerances imvolved usually is the difference between the hole you drilled and the pin, or driving a screw...which is about as zero tolerance as you're going to get it woodworking.... As compared to cutting a circle to a specific dimension... Then cutting another circle to match that dimensions... Then spacing your bearings, some how magically, to the exact position, to hold the exact amount of clearance to allow the whole thing to rotate....

Yes the bearings add slop, but if you are having to orient a vacuum hose in one direction this might be useful.

Good idea but it is much more easy and accurate to use a guide bushing inserted in a hole of the same size. Personally, I drilled a 20mm hole in the jig with a forstner bit and I use a 20mm guide bushing. Easy to set up as there is no need to screw a base on the router and nothing to adjust. Just insert the guide bushing into the router base and put it in the hole of the jig.

Firstly you Have to remove the base plate to install the bushing on most routers anyway, so I don't see a problem here. Secondly, not all routers have a bushing "out of the box", so you'd have to make or buy one. But if you really want a fast swap capability with minimal fuss on the jig side and are itching to buy something - another full base wouldn't hurt i guess... I can see myself making a permanent round base plate from some hardy material like acrilic and just sticking to it... it's better than my square one anyway.

@@arcuscerebellumus8797 Many trim routers come with a round base (e.g. DeWalt) as well. So, nothing to fit, and no loss of height. Personally, if I wanted to make such a jig, instead of encircling the router with a track, I would fit a raised round part in the centre, just the right size to fit into the clearance hole in the router base. Nothing to fit to the router, no loss of height, and no ball races. Simples.

Yes - a guide bushing is so much simpler! I just drill a 3/4” hole in the jig, rout with a 1/4” bit paired with a 3/4” guide bushing and the router will rotate on the jig. Easy, peasy. John Jensen from British Columbia.

You are already using a cordless, so cord entanglement is not an issue. Regardless, cord entanglement has never been an issue for me for small router of thin gauge cord, such as two conductor (double insulated) 18 AWG. I don't see the great advantage of the router itself being able to rotate. Or am I missing something?

Many trim routers come with a round bottom plate- so you do not need to make that part. The round shroud that goes around it serves no purpose- it rides on the ball races. So you do not have to make that part either. In practice, if you have an overhead extraction system (probably the best arrangement), the rotation of the router is not a problem in the first place...

Well it is a nice jig. But the moon does not rotate on its own axis. It only rotates around the earth in a bound rotation, e.g. the same side of the moon always faces to the earth. And that is the opposite from what your jig does. 😉

The Makita palm routers are nicely made, and have 5 different bases available. The corded one does not have a light, but the cordless does. My biggest complaint, about them, is the lack of micro adjustment.

Mount a router to a piece of board approximately the size of the router base. Plunge the bit down through the wood until it comes out the underside. Now make a straight line radiating away from the router hole. Make a small hole with an 1/8" drill bit about 12 inches from the router hole but on that radiating line. Make a half circle around the small hole. Draw straight lines from that half circle to the edges of the router base. Cut that shape out on the outside of the lines on a bandsaw or use a coping saw. You are done. Now any hole you make on that straight line down the middle is your pivot point center for any size circle you want to route out or chamfer or bull nose. Just measure out from the center of the router hole half the diameter of the required circle or arc and make a hole on that line.

It actually does. It rotates around its own axis and around Earth with the same angular speed. Therefore the illusion that it does not rotate relative to Earth, or in other words always shows the same face to the Earth.
