Are SSI, SSDI, VA recipients eligible for the $1200 Stimulus Check?
So most recipients of SSI, SSDI, and VA are eligible for the $1,200 COVID-19 stimulus payment, also known as the economic impact payment within the CARES Act.
You’re eligible for one of these stimulus checks as long as you have a Social Security number and you are not claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return. If you have any children, you’re also eligible for an extra $500 for each child who is under the age of 17, as long as the child lives with you for more than half the year. Here is a warning though, if you receive SSDI, SSI, or VA you’ll automatically get the stimulus money, but the IRS said these recipients won't get the $500 for children under 17 if they haven't filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return, unless they submitted a non-filer information form to the IRS. Social Security beneficiaries and Railroad retirement beneficiaries had until noon on April 22 to submit this info to receive their additional $500 per child payment. If you missed this deadline you’ll be forced to forego this additional stimulus payment until spring 2021
#2 What if I Don’t File a tax return? Do SSDI, SSI, or VA have to file a tax return or non-filer tax form?
If you don't file a tax return because your income is below the filing threshold or your only income is SSI or SSDI or veterans benefits, you are still eligible for the $1200 stimulus payment. If you received SSDI, SSI, or veterans compensation or pension in 2019, and you don't have children under 17, you don't have to do anything; the government will send you your check automatically.
Here are the exceptions:
Parents who receive monthly SSDI, SSI, or Railroad Retirement checks who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, as mentioned earlier, needed to tell the IRS about their children, their ages, and their Social Security numbers. SSDI recipients as mentioned had until noon on apr. 22nd to do that. SSI and VA have been extended to an unknown date.
Also if you just started to receive SSDI, SSI, or veterans benefits in 2020, you have to submit a non-filer tax return. But as mentioned above if you received these benefits in 2019, you don't have to do anything; and your check will be sent automatically.
#3 What if I receive disability benefits but have other income?
The IRS will use your adjusted gross income from your most recent tax return 2018 or 2019 to determine if your payment needs to be reduced. If you receive additional income apart from your disability benefits that makes your combined income over $75,000, your stimulus payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount over those thresholds. Likewise, If you’re married and file a joint return and your income combined with your spouse’s is over $150K, you’ll also receive a reduced payment.
