Yes, certainly a great addition to a hybrid setup. I just wish they actually made a Big12 or Big16 or a means of expanding the I/O via ADAT etc. But this Big 6 plus an UF8, an UC1, a Flock Patch and a some choice modules/rack units certainly makes for a very flexible hybrid setup! Having the flexibility to expand it would be the i ing on the cake. There’s still a huge gap between this and the XL desk. I’m sure there would be plenty takers for a 2x Big Six with a ‘proper’ G-comp (same as the 500 version in spec), ADAT expansion and space for a 500 series module or four to boot. AN SSL XL lite with built in interface! Would gladly pay 5k for that puppy! (Even more if it could double up as an UF8 expander and had recall!)

So I just came from a Midas Venice F24 and just recently the damn PSU died on me. I tried to to look for a replacement part for it but everywhere I looked it was out of stock. And because of your reviews from a year ago that I watched, I decided to go with the Big Six as well. I’ll be getting it in a couple of days and I can’t wait to test it out in studio. Keep up the great work on your channel and best of luck to you!

From my standpoint, the real design flaw with Big Six is that it has no ADAT I/O. So it cannot be used in any system as an analog front end / expander. ADAT I/O that mirrored the USB Interface routing would make Big Six ideal as an ADAT expander for two Apollo rack units and this would be really beneficial.

Ok TouchTone ... I've been drooling over this unit for several months now, while being patient and waiting on the 1+ year reviews. Thx bro for the transparency, as I'm down that "analog" hole looking for a hybrid unit as such to capture my beloved saxophones. 4 MONEY channels truly excite me along with the routing & summing w/external gear in my arsenal. Still can't afford the 16 Ch Origin that dropped a few days ago, so I have to dream a little longer, while producing on this unit that you have endorsed! Keep the trails blazing ...

The BigSix is so wonderful (a friend of mine uses it, I use Rupert Neve 5059s and a 5060). It’s a top-of-class mixing solution when it comes to flexibility and sound! Thanks brother for the the follow up, I appreciate it! I have to say I got mine in August, I have waited for the waves to calm down regarding the noise issue and the (even bigger) noise in the online world. Though I understand that SSL didn’t do a great job and I feel for those who ran into that issue. Anyway, I have never experienced any issues at all (thanks god) and I can say it sounds analog. It has its own flavor, it’s really something unique. I mean, it’s not that other interfaces are bad. But typically you get that clean high resolution converter sound in todays music. The BIG SIX has got that great analog foundation, a fat bass, great middle range and smooth top end. It’s a clean sound of course, but a little different to interfaces of RME, Lynx or Focusrite (RED line), to which I would compare it. Great converters, that got that nice analog feel…and I love the hands on approach, the BIG SIX is very easy to use. The EQ sections are fantastic, the Compressor is solid (usually I don’t apply too much compression to my tracks) and for me it’s ok. Summing and Stereo Imaging are the other two big points the SSL makes. Of course, there are cons (less analog I inserts)…But the positives are way bigger (and you can get rid of a lot of cables 😊). Cheers

Thanks for your informitive video. I have been using the big six for a year or so too. I agree on all points. Luckely I never had any noise problems. I also miss the inserts on the stereo channels but have analog hardware patched in, so there is a way around it, but it means using a different ad/da converter (ferrofish, I think its not available in the US). The main plus for me is the sound, I produce music using orchestra and real strings and its sounds absolutely amazing with this kind of input. My biggest con is the price, I paid 2859 € and half a year later it dropped to 2500 €, that was a bit of a disappointment, whilst all the other gear, eg. mics from Neumann and others a getting more and more expansive. Next time I will not buy the first batch of a new piece... anyway I love the big six, in winter it also nicely heats up the room... all the best and keep producing. toni

Love the channel. Watched your videos on the Big Six before purchasing. Unfortunately, mine had USB stabilty issues (Got a lemon - it happens on all products). Returned mine and got a used Six. Running it through my patchbay into two Audio Interfaces (like options). Tons of headroom and sounds amazing!!! The Big Six while expensive is actually a great deal. You get SSL 3 band EQ, G Comp, and most importantly a 16 in/out Audio Interface. My wish list would be cooling fans, Inserts on all channels, 4 band EQ, Master EQ, Motorized faders, Comp on all channels, two more Ext stereo inputs, Not made in China, and it would be absolute perfection. Would pay double or possibly triple for a device with guaranteed 10+ yr driver support (RME). Still an outstanding mixer and a heck of a deal as is!!

Just wanted to add, I'm a big six user, I had the noise issue and got the retrofit kit. It was easy to install, SSL sent it out very quickly , and it completely solved the issue. As far as I understand, the problem was related to the power supply (which is external, and is an aftermarket switching power supply - not made by SSL). The modification adds increased filtering at the power input. For me, this was just a minor inconvenience and did not tarnish my perception of the product or SSL. Just my 2 cents! Great video.

So if you'd like to turn the stereo cues into sends and returns, or more buses shall we say, I've been looking for a way to combine the Bus 2 and the stereo cues to return into the SUM INPUT TO MAIN inputs and found the best for quality and saving money option would probably be a HRK SM2558 ACTIVE STEREO SUMMING MIXER. This will give the little short falls the mixer has back into itself... basically you need a 6 channel mixer of some kind that's not going to break the bank or lower the audio quality

One thing I still don’t get is how and why other brands (Audient or Behringer, to name a few) don’t try to enter the market with alternatives to the BigSIX. It may be a niche, but Cranborne Audio already opened the door, SSL kicked the door…who’s gonna bust the walls next? Anyways. Thanks for the amazing content. Can’t wait for more review. @Ross Boyd I run a tascam model 16 into the SiX into my interface then route all the ins and outs from the interface into and out of a patchbay so I can basically assign any digital track to faders on the model 16 or Six. It’s basically a limitless setup at this point. All connected to my outboard gear too with the patchbay. In fact, it would be the industry leader at this price point. I play and write modern jazz and record live. As it is I’m better off keeping my Audient ID44 with 2 ASP 800s to make 20 channels of solid conversion at this point. I would love to own one of these but I need channels.

The only reason I haven't jumped on the Big6 yet is because it lacks any expandability. Even the Digi001 had ADAT optical, adding 8 channels of I/O. Adding another 8 channels of input would be huge. Creating a virtual interface in MacOS creates too much latency for live recording. And that's really the only option SSL left us. For a live band with drums, 16 channels in my minimum.

You know what I want to see SSL bringing out? Okay, get this, a SSL BIGGER lol. SSL have a Dante PCIE card, so a bigger brother of the big, 16 channels, two stereo buses and maybe two mono buses, all mono channels, with inserts on all of them and the connection to the computer? Dante.! That would absolutely rule the small studios world!!!

Ah okay, it might be fine… for mixing stereo cues become inserts. Might get this as the mixer/interface. The value for money is incredible with this. The quality of the converters and in and outs is about all you get in the same price bracket but this has a console attached to it. I’d probably get a RME HDSPe AIO Pro so I can get low latency for recording vocals with plugins on tracking and for AES for mastering converters… but this’ll be the meat of the studio. It’s insane good sound and insanely good value… I’d be stupid not to invest in it.

For something to sound “better” after time is a big statement to how good it is. We all get stuff and go “wow” by it, then after a bit that thing is just normal and not so “wow”… so for it to have now sounded better to you, it’s now the bit that’s finally sold me on it. That value for money is unreal and from such a expensive premium company!!! Conversation being too notch. I was a bit ‘Meh about the lay out. My issue is that I’d definitely use different preamps to the ones on it, but would be great for extra preamps when recoding and band, but the only four mono channels have the preamps, so it’s those or other preamps not mixing to two, that’s been the only thing causing a gripe… I don’t want to have four preamps that’ll never get used. Although, really they will serve at times, they are great for cab milking and for certain other applications. I would have preferred if they all were mono channels and then have two buses before the master bus… that would give me to idea mixing layout… but, considering to have that at least would mean a MCM 20.4, which already costs more and doesn’t have half of the stuff I’d then have to add to it, £10,000 when I’m done… the limits of this seems a bit childish to worry about

You helped me decide NOT to buy a big six. As soon as you mentioned NOISE and explained how they handled it, nope, not even gonna put myself in a position to have that problem, especially considering the price. I've read reviews about SSL gear in a few places, alot of people with many years of experience seem to think SSL sold out and sells cheap Chinese made products. There's a review about the Fusion on Sweetwater that sealed the deal on me not getting one of those. I'll stick with my Mackie 1604 and outboard gear into my interface.

bruh how are you connecting the TC Electronics Clarity to the Big Six? I want to be able to meter audio coming from my daw as well as streaming services...from what I see, Clarity is digital only so I'm confused so I haven't bought it yet. But yea the BiGSix is a monster. Changed the way I mix, way faster turnaround now. I use the g-comp on every mix, you have other hardware alternatives though so can see you not doing so...I have to look into that parallel compression configuration you're talking about.

I am a big fan of this vid and I use a lot of SSL gear. I have to say it this way. If SSL just sent out the fix to everyone, my guess everyone would have given them kudos that they took care of the issue with a free part and a solution. . I've been there . It's sometimes the way with analogue gear. Because they offered an additional 50% off software people took it as being cheap. They should not have brought this up.They would have been better off just sending the part out. It would have shown them backing up their products. The fact that you didn't have noise and it didn't cause you any grief, well....just sayin. All good.

Hey TouchTone. I had to come back and watch this video and I wanted to run something buy you for your opinion. On one of your videos and I had mention I had $10K to upgrade studio so here is the goal. I want to upgrade mix bus and sound. So I am thinking from my research adding the following; SSL Fusion, SSL2 Buss, this would be to glue mix and to start building a mastering chain so adding Dangerous Music compressor, also adding saturation not sure if plugin (any suggestions on hardware?) I also considering adding to my 500series Elysia Elixer for mastering, then the $10K is gone.... however I need a new EQ so looking at Rupert Neve Newton for tracking (my guitar/bass/synths but can use on multiple items), I eventually would like a summing mixer like the Burl Audio B32 or the Rupert Never 5057 Orbit or the Dangerous D-Box(any suggestions?), And for Master processing eventually add would like to eventually add the Rupert neve Portico II Master Buss processor but that will be later in the year. I am really trying to step up my sound, I got a lot better at production over the last few years and now I want to make that push.

My brother-How did I suspect that your time with the Big 6 was going to be not too long?!! First let me say that I mainly produce acoustically recorded projects-jazz, classical, folk, world music. So I am generally using a Big 6 or similar to simultaneously record multiple instruments with microphones. Channel count is not a limitation. It just makes you commit! Motown, the Beatles all recorded fantastic quality albums on 4 track tape. All these younger engineers do is pro tools multitrack to death. If you are just tracking beats loops and samples one at a time the Big 6 may not be for you. Yes you can mix down with it but if your ears and workflow are "in the box" I'm not sure you can convert. Also for $3K what more do you want? You are comparing it to $20k of interfaces, preamps and effects. If you want a more fair comparison price wise between an analog mixer and an interface/computer setup, I would suggest the API Box 2.

great job with your studio! you are definitely correct. it is a huge miss on SSL's part to not include analog inserts on the stereo channels. they could easily put the jacks where it says Big SIX in giant letters, so "no place to put the connections" is not a valid excuse. one of SSL's best products is the 500 series stereo bus compressor. four stereo channels... that's an opportunity to sell four stereo buss compressors to a studio.

About SSL's increasing corporatization: large corporations are well aware of the fact that their customers are willing to tolerate some shit in the long run, even if they get really upset in th short term, and they have plenty of data on their side to justify it, and they prioritize from that data. I wouldn't blame SSL so much as their parent company Audiotonix, who is large enough to be willing to conduct business that way. At the end of the day, it doesn't sound like you're selling your SSL mixer, you're likely to buy more SSL gear in the future... so their approach has proven itself. Smaller companies - i.e. the formerly independently owned SSL - can't afford to do that, with their relatively small output and inability to reduce costs through scaling. To get the experience you wanted to have with the noise issue, you would have probably paid double what you paid for your Big SiX.

Let me try explain something. SSL mixers used to cost hundreds of thousands. They still do cost tens of thousands, well, hundreds too, depending of the setup. The fact that they wanted to appeal to the more scaled down studios with product like this - is actually luck for the user. Also, 50% of your next hardware purchase - what if you want to buy, say, Duality, should they give you 50% discount?:) You know, for those huge analogue systems, SSL engineers would come over, install the console, and you wouldn't even touch anything in - because a capacitor can bust out, and you wouldn't know which one and where. But you cant expect the same treatment as the customer paying half a mil for a product. I bought a synth of similar price actually, more than what Big Six costs, and and a small display screen got bad - so they sent me a new screen ( I am in the UK, and this was boutique USA manufacturer). I'd never give them headache over that. Should 've they sent me smt? They dont have software, or small products to send as compensation. Same with SSL, the only thing they could ve done better is either give you a free 2+ or give you plugins for free.
