You can actually use the Sends on channels 1 through 4 as direct outs. Here's what it says in the manual: "Another benefit of this configuration and the unity gain design is that the Insert Send can be used as a pre-fade, post-processing direct channel output to act as a record feed."

I've had the Big Six as the centerpiece of my home studio since it came out. The money channels (1-4) I have permanently hooked up to my drum mics (Kick, Snare, Knee, Overhead). But then I also added 2 Neve-style pres as inserts on channels 1-2 so that I can track other stereo sources through it like my pedalboard, synths, etc. The aim was to leave the additional faders for summing, just like you did. But I have done full stem mixes through it too on sessions where I've already tracked using my Apollo. In those cases, I'll do something like: 1 - Kick 2 - Snare 3 - Bass 4 - Lead Vocal 5/6 - Keys 7/8 - Guitars 9/10 - Drum Overheads 11/12 - BG Vocals I've got a template in Ableton/Logic/Pro Tools where there are track folders that are wired to each of those channels. Since I'm deep into the UAD world and I still want to track that way, I added a Passive Monitoring Switcher (Heritage Audio Baby R.A.M) so that with the press of a button I can toggle between my Apollo and the Big Six outputting to the same set of monitors.

@ ~ 9:00 - actually, channels 1-4 have balanced sends and returns. If you want 4 discrete mic pres just take the signal out of the Sends of channel 1-4. Actually, I feel the mixer's greatest/worst compromise is the lack of Send and Return on the stereo channels. There's no way to insert (e.g.) a full-featured compressor between the USB returns and the mix bus for those rather limited channels. My guess is they thought eliminating their traditional DB25 connectors in lieu of 1/4" might gain greater market adoption. I can't speak to whether or not it was the right decision -- I'm in no way a professional marketer -- but I think using DB25 for Send and Return on the stereo channels, as well as inputs for the stereo channels would have allowed the feature at the same price point.
@L.Scott_Music10 ай бұрын
You said you wanted to add another 4 mic pres to your main set up. I'd think the Universal Audio 4-710d would be a premium choice. I remember when the SiX came out and I had talked to the SSL guys about wishing it have two more main channels. The BiG SiX certainly answered my wish list and more.

If I’m not mistaken (I’ve only been doing this stuff for about a year give or take) summing and busing is the same thing, it’s essentially the process of taking multiple tracks, typically similar tracks and “summing” them to a single track to control them from the same fader. Take guitars for example, instead of turning up the left and right guitar channels individually, you could use the guitar sum to turn them both up at the same time. Hope this helps 👍

I have had the Big Six for about six months and I have to say I'm more happy about it than I thought I would be. It's not my primary interface but it dang-well could be if I needed it to be. The only thing I wish it had was a virtual console of some kind, but that's the only major "flaw" I can muster. It's added to the aggregate device with all the other interfaces currently, but it's a must-have for me now that I have it. Highly recommend.
@puresoundstudios9 ай бұрын
This is quite powerful if integrated using an Apple Aggregate (Audio) Device implementation (look up if you haven’t heard about it). I have 24 I/O with Focusrite Clarett/Clarett+ 3x interfaces which I have paired with the Big Six. It means I have 40 I/O, heaps of preamps, and using inserts/patchbays, many ways I can bring in outboard gear of which I have quite a bit. I also have a Solid State Logic Six mixer which with the Big Six gives me 14 analog stereo busses at mix down…I use the Six as my FX line mixer with all effects generated in the box and push these back into the Big Six using the “SUM INPUT TO MAIN BUSS” function. With this set up I don’t have to print the mix to a track within the DAW, and just use the standard Logic real-time mix down print to an external WAV file. I hope that’s helpful for those seriously considering a purchase.
@SimonWalker-f1l13 күн бұрын
9:25 @Rhett Shull Two you can go direct into Pro Tools without going through the summing section. If you hit the USB out Post Fader button by the fader for each channel that sends it directly to the AD converters from the bottom of the fader without routing it any further. This is what you were talking about yes? Edit. for the people saying Use the Inserts as the direct out, use the USB out Post fader Button because you can then keep the inserts hooked up. you can also send the channel with Insert, EQ and Compression on it to the DAW, OR you can turn them all off and just send the dry clean signal with no processing. You can also use BUS B for this option and have BUS B to record individual channels as you select them.

I agree about knobs and mixing with your ears. What is needed is a "fat channel" set of knobs for a single channel. A gain knob, +48V and phase button. 3-5 sections of three knob EQ. A set of knobs for compression and limiting. SSL has the UC1 but at $800 seem a bit steep for a bunch of encoders, buttons and LEDs. I guess the distinctive SSL black VU meters makes it all worthwhile.

Another example of one of these is the funky and recently revived Alice 828 mk.III, by Ted Fletcher in the UK. It's more vintage and minimal than this. Both great mixers, but I think I like the more focused vibe of the Alice more - and I think it's sound is a step up, and has mojo when driven. But depends what you want it for. If you need it to be an interface, have comps, EQ on every channel, AUX, the Big Six is great. Don't count out the smaller SSL Six too, for many, that would do the job. And it's is more compact, and much cheaper, especially second-hand.

@djsoo10 ай бұрын
that analog sauce i'm assuming. You're running your audio through analog transformers, analog signal path including EQ and natural saturation and it gives you a "better" sound mix - depending on who you talk to that is...

they do ! Summing is more about how you use a mixer rather than what the mixer is : recording each channel of the mixer individually (through a direct out) “bypasses” the summing. But bringing all the tracks through the mixer to stereo is summing :)

The pre-amps are not up to class when I compare with my RME devices and of course not with a RBN Shelford Channel. They seems dull on the high end side. I have the SIX, smaller version. To use this as a summing mixer is more or less worthless, unless you colour the track with some more HW inserts.
@Mikey__R10 ай бұрын
People obsess over analogue summing, I'm absolutely not convinced it's the summing amplifier that they're hearing. You've got eqs and compressors thickening your sound, are the extra harmonics really likely to be from the compressor, or from the summing amp? This looks good value, £2000 gets you a lot of compressors and eqs. I think though, that I'd rather have a selection of outboard gear, either rack mount or 500 series.
@dustinthiessen10 ай бұрын
it would be pretty simple to do a direct A/B comparison without using any of the EQ or compression on the desk. As a straight summing mixer though, I'd be more inclined to go the route of some of the RND pieces though...

You are totally wrong with what you are saying at 9:51. You can use the four inserts of the four monochannels as direct outs. What the SSL Big Six is missing big time is the fact that not all channels do have inserts. That is the reason why I still didn´t buy one to this point.
@gmichaelhall10 ай бұрын
If the Big Six could be daisy chained to a 2nd unit , with both able to bus to 1 master section it is a great building block for a small studio. Otherwise the limitations as mentioned in the video are really a tipping point for the unit remaining in the prosumer genre with only hints of what a proper hybrid system console can be. Unfortunately, the more logical solution for this particular setup is the 8424 by AMS Neve, in my opinion. It’s a way more flexible controller and hybrid surface that allows for multiple modes and applications. But it comes at a steep but feasible price compared to this little SSL interface ✌️

I was really interested in this as well for a lot of the same reason, and just that it would be just so economical to add all of that analog goodness to a studio. But the lack of expandability with something like ADAT/SPDIF to integrate into something else was a deal breaker. It would be really compelling if they did something like Cranborne audio is doing with their 500 series racks.. a version that's your centerpiece with in-built interface, and one that functions as an ADAT expander. I would definitely reconsider it, because its a nice little package.
@DeliciousMauritious10 ай бұрын
In my opinion the ADAT thing is the most annoying if you plan to use it as your studio center piece. My work around is using aggregate devices on my Mac. Other limitations include stripped down EQ (wish the middle band was fully parametric) and no make up gain on the four compressors on the mono channels which make it rather useless when using this as a summing mixer.

It's VCR instructions x1,000, if you're old. enough to remember what those are. There are plenty of YT videos out there on how to use it, but very piecemeal and more the hows than the whys in regards to features. I think you can do a better job.

I can't believe you can't use the channel inserts or sends for your outputs for the four mono channels. Lastly...you know you're paying $1500 just to have it say "SSL" on it too. Buy a nice used Midas or similar if you need mic pres for the same price
