I know this is where technology is trending for autos, outboard motors, etc but I suppose I’m still “old school” for gasoline engines. I’m not thrilled about having a 200 lb battery in my dinghy with the chance of it being exposed to salt water with waves coming over the side not to mention charging devices and more solar panels. Personally, I prefer to wait until this technology becomes more mature, battery’s get lighter and price drops on everything! Glad you are testing this new technology for us “ Old Schoolers”.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble76653 жыл бұрын
You have a point with the batteries... but the motors are already superior and more reliable being virtually maintainance free for a decade or more in some cases. They can produce 100% torque from go. Batteries will get cheaper lighter and more power dense. And hopefully ... a lot less volatile. I would have thought the outer cases for the caps dingy motor would have been plastic ABS or at least waterproof. Like a big commercial storage box or heavy duty tradesmans tool box.🤔 Running out of gas or Derv..is also a problem as is fuel contamination and this side of the pond theres the issue of changes to the content of petrol and older engines being attacked by the higher Ethanol content.🙄

What happens if you have to go a long way away from the boat and need to charge to make the return trip? Gas is easier to get than a battery charger at most places. Be well and safe.

Our battery lasts just as long as a tank of gas and has a range of 35-40 miles at our average speed. plus we are installing the two solar panels on top of the new dinghy so it will keep charging when we are out on our excursions days... can't do that with gasoline, ever! Lol

Honestly think Electric has so many fundamental superiorities over Petrol/gas/diesel. People forget all the time spent maintaining and fixing diesel/outboard motors, all the problems with fuel contamination/bugs finding fuel, not to mention the absolutely enormous infrastructure that's required to transport diesel/petrol around the world. Most places have electricity, certainly most marinas have shore power and solar, wind & regeneration whilst sailing is pretty much making it viable. Having a diesel generator as a hybrid back up (which essentially gives you the same propulsion system as the huge turboelectric ships) is probably sensible at the moment but can definitely see a time when diesel/petrol becomes harder to get.

Are you going to put solar on the dingy? What will you do if you don't have enough battery to get the dingy back to SSL? Do you charge the battery on the dingy from SSL or the dock power? I guess I would have a fear the battery would drain to much but I also don't know alot about the battery system you have.

Watching your battery gauge would be the same as watching your gas gauge, if you run out it means you weren't paying attention! Lol. I have to admit, I would have put quite a bit more oomph into the dinghy. I know it can drain the battery in just a few minutes, but why not? The engine should be able to do the same with the same power draw, the throttle would need a different response curve, though. About two years ago, I got myself a Tesla Model 3. I can drain the battery in about 40 minutes (I think, might be longer if it throttles down due to overheating, never tried it), giving me a full power range of about 160 km. On the other hand, I can run around the city all day long on a single charge, without even trying to conserve power, due to less air drag at low speeds, resulting in a range well in excess of 600 km. What I'm trying to say, I'd have put in much more - fuel costs nothing any more and if you don't need the range, you can hammer it if you're in a hurry (or if you need an emergency tug).
