We now begin the section of the podcast series that proceeds step by step through the Mass to examine the various sections and rubrics of the liturgy, starting with the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar through the Conclusion. Before we look at the individual ceremonies, however, we must explicate the proper method for approaching the Mass. The ceremonies of the Mass are very ancient, and their origin is often lost in the mists of history. How can we go about discovering why the Mass is arranged as it is along with the meaning of its constituent parts?

Than you so much Father Robinson for taking time to explain everything in detail. It means so much to us who have come to Tradition from the NO.

I have also noticed in some TLM communities people kneel during the Our Father and remain kneeling whereas in other places it seems to be mandatory to stand as soon as the Amen of the Canon is said. Another thing I find a bit odd is kneeling during the Gloria in excelsis at Low Mass in the USA, but standing up in Europe (or at least where I was).

I have long been curious why the priest incenses the gifts twice counterclockwise (viewed from above) and then back once clockwise.

I remember some Novus Ordo people, possibly a modern nun, insisting that the candles were originally only for seeing and therefore we as modern people did not really need them, but she always set up the altar with a squatty candle on one side and a flower pot (usually gaudy) on the other side because according to her it looked "nice" and all the churches were doing it. Has anyone else seen this arrangement on Novus Ordo altars?

I thought that I saw one time a bringing up of the gifts at a Latin Mass. I could be confused, but I think it had something to do with the first mass of a newly ordained priest and his parents would bring up the gifts. Possibly this was an innovation before the Novus Ordo was introduced.

I have also seen different ceremonies for the TLM in different countries. I noticed that in France the Epistle and the Gospel were read in French. The Epistle was read in French at the lectern by another priest or deacon while the celebrating priest read it in Latin, but quietly. The Gospel was chanted in Latin, but then immediately read in French in the pulpit to start the sermon. I rather liked this custom. I do not like the making of announcements between the readings in Latin and the sermon which seems to be the common practise in the USA. I find it so worldly. We have just heard the Gospel of salvation and have to listen to father promoting raffle tickets. Surely that is one improvement in the Novus Ordo even though I hate to admit it.

Lay person here - I'm enjoying it a lot! Going through it with my kids as part of their religion curriculum. He takes you step by step through the Mass and includes some history along the way. God bless!

56:40 I was told that the bishop, being older, needed more light. I suppose that is one of the silly and incorrect answers to which you have referred.
