As far as my Little experience is concerned, The reason why Mayamalavagoula is taken as the beginner's Raga as per Subbrama Dikshithar in Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarshini is that: "The swaras are Unchanged (Kakali), and Unaltered (Antara) S R1 M1 P D1 are shuddha swaras G3 N3 are Antara and Kakali And since Carnatic Music is based on the style of the veena, Since music is initiated at an early age, Children cannot pluck very distant notes. Hence, Mayamavalagoula is chosen because S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S* These are adjacent pairs of notes. So if equidistance is the only criteria for selection of the basic raga, Shankarabharanam Kharaharapriya Todi Can also be considered as viable options (Though the latter two can be excused because they are very Gamaka oriented) Some choose to take Shankarabharanam (Major scale) as the base but it is an influence of Western classical as Playing of "White keys" from C to C will give the major scale So at the end it's upon convenience and the type of instrument
