SSTC pt. 16 - X-rays from a Tesla coil?

Today I warn about the risk of accidental x-ray production when using a Tesla Coil. Vacuum tubes, vacuum tungsten lamps, discharge lamps with an outer bulb under a vacuum, or other vacuum / very low pressure vessels may produce x-ray radiation when exposed to a high voltage from a Tesla coil.
I also diverge to DIY x-ray machines with x-ray tubes powered using various high voltage multipliers, usually from old CRT televisions. Those dodgy homemade contraptions are commonly used with an amplifying screen from an analog x-ray cassette, used as a fluoroscopic screen. Such experiments are very dangerous and I don't recommend them.

I'm glad you posted this warnings for people -- Anything with high voltage and a vacuum for electrons to accelerate + deaccelerate will create x-rays. Generally I've learned that if it's less than 60KV the x-rays are too soft to penetrate through glass and skin, etc. However, tesla coil voltages absolutely will create hard x-rays.. Once i tried producing xrays using a soviet GP-5 high voltage vacuum tube and i zapped it with a zvs driver and my dp5 geiger counter, despite having a shielded probe, maxed out. Later i drew an arc in air and it still showed a lot of radiation so i concluded that it was likely the zvs driver operating frequency that messed with my counter. Are you sure that your geiger didnt do the same? i mean yes there was a significant amount of xrays produced but maybe the frequency of the coil was effecting your measurments too?

X-ray tubes output an insane amount of radiation, an eye opener for me was when I started playing with a dose calculator (rad pro calculator) and realized this fortunately didn't had an x-ray tube before that. They can output Sieverts per hour at about a meter with input powers of a couple tens of watts, its just totally mental. "ultra high level" pitchblende rocks are cute compared to an x-ray tube.
@inductivelycoupledplasma6207
@inductivelycoupledplasma6207 Жыл бұрын
OMG yes. X ray tubes are insane. Big samples of rich pitchblende may put off 1mSv/h in gamma on contact. Even a tiny dental x ray tube can put out insane amounts of radiation as you said (with tiny amounts of beam power).

Scary stuff. X-rays, like any high energy ionizing radiation, are not perceptible to the human senses at levels that can cause life threatening damage. Strong enough X-ray energy will feel like the warmth from a heat lamp but at that level tissues inside you are rapidly dying.
@AKAtheA
@AKAtheA 4 жыл бұрын
1) the open end of the RGBT-62 probe is just the red plastic foil in front of the tube (does squat to the X-rays) 2) almost all Geiger counter tubes are calibrated to much higher energy radiation (hundreds of keV to single MeV gamma), so in fact most thin-walled tubes will severely overestimate the dose rate when left bare, especially with low energy X-rays...remember that the tube is just a binary detector, it has no idea about the actual energy of what triggered it 3) "energy compensated" tubes have a specific shield in front of them, which while correcting the dose rates for higher energy radiation tend to also completely absorb the single tens of keV X-rays TL:DR - do not use a GM tube to even try to estimate dose rates with low energy X-rays. Unless it was specifically designed/calibrated for it - the data is useless, it can be off by several orders of magnitude either way. It makes a for a good detector (especially for us broke-ass amateurs), but an incredibly shitty meter.

Odd thing about the radiation seen on the CCD is there is no "green" specifically. Only red, blue, and white. Wonder if that was due to the construction? Would have expected to see all three primary colors but maybe he green pixels at that location are activated along with the red and blue to give only white.
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 4 жыл бұрын
The "green" is nearly white probably because of how the software interprets the raw data from the Bayer filter, which has twice as many green pixels. Each full color pixel is calculated from a 2x2 square of red, green, green, blue pixels. It probably interprets it as green only if both green pixels are excited. But the x-rays only excite one at the time.
@mysock351C
@mysock351C 4 жыл бұрын
@@DiodeGoneWild Ah ok. Thanks. Yeah I kind of remember that from importing video and images from a CCD camera way back when in robotics courses at college. Kind of makes sense since it would help preserve the RGB balance in low light conditions by having a portion of the green just go to gray scale.

i didnt think that x-rays generated from relatively low-power tesla coils and vacuum tubes could be so dangerous and such high energy. @DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 4 жыл бұрын
It could probably run at a higher frequency, but IR2153 has a 1.2us nominal deadtime. So at 416 kHz, the pulses completely disappear in the deadtime. At 208, kHz the deadtime is already the same lenght as the pulses. So you should probably use IR21531 which has only 0.6us deadtime. And of course, at a higher frequency the control circuitry may draw more current, keep this in mind if powering it using a resistive dropper.

In another comment, he said that particular geiger counter didn't detect anything when he ran the teslacoil without a vacuum tube. It only started making xrays when he put a lamp or vacuum tube on top.

Hi, Can you please make a power supply with variable voltage and which could give current upto 20A with fairly easy connections. It's a request of a young watcher. Please help your little brother from another mother from India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳.

Dan (DiodeGoneWild) has some projects on his website: danyk.cz/reg60v_en.html danyk.cz/at_atx_en.html The first is built from scratch and the second is made from modifying a PC ATX power supply (there are lots of videos about this, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZaxcpuGYqx8oNE was in my sidebar. DGW also did a video I believe) If you want to build something from scratch with a simple schematic, you probably want a linear power supply. Lots of info online. If you don't need voltage regulated, just connect a standard transformer-rectifier-capacitor basic supply to a variac.

That nixie is enormous. I don't think you can even buy them that large. The largest ones I could find were like 4cm tall for 70cad each. The soviet Era ones I mean. You should do a cool project with one of your old displays or set of nixies. I could make a joke about another youtuber who thinks he or she is the KZbin display expert. But I won't. They should be your nest egg for retirement then move to a hut on a beach hahaha

why do xray scans cost 400$ when a throwaway crt tv modded with a 2$ sodium lamp can draw the image on a 0.20$ piece of paper and you can snap it with your phone you already own? Edit: its much cheaper here, but im sure it wouldn't be in america or any big european city

You are paying for the and the depreciation cost of the machine and mostly the expert operator, who is highly trained to not kill you. The actual X-ray is free.
@two_number_nines

@@videolabguy you are paying off debt they took for overpriced 100k$ machine. My point is the whole medical industry from degrees to equipment is priced to extort people held hostage by their illness. During covid, ventilator manufacturers send cease and desist letters to people publicly posting repair manuals, while their "authorised" repair of a 2$ component takes months and costs thousands.

Because you live in a country where you have to pay directly for healthcare, most likely private, so they can put whichever price they want, as long as all other companies do the same (which they do because they all profit from the unwritten deal).

I understand that a high voltage discharge creates X-rays and even hard X-rays. I also understand that a discharge typically requires 10kv per cm of discharge. what I don't understand therefore is why the discharges of 15cm and more that I have seen recently on your channel are not a concern ?

You can't accelerate electrons fast enough to produce x-rays unless they are in vacuum or very low pressure.
