This looks really interesting. Ben, where is it printed? I hope it's LEGO from Italy as per the other ACNA liturgical books. They do fantastic quality stuff.
@benjefferies85316 ай бұрын
So, the Korean printer that we collaborate with (owned by Anglicans by the way) brought some higher-quality production capacities online this year -- and this book was our first venture with them on high end book creation, and they knocked it out of the park. From the paper quality, the two-color spot printing, the bonded-leather work, etc. I think, at the level of the product, this is almost indistinguishable from LEGO, and about 40% cheaper, which savings fully translates to the accessible sale price ($90).

Really interesting and looks really nicely made. I'm considering getting one but I'm very uneducated in breviaries and not sure how I'd use it. Is it basically just the daily offices without the other documents found in the BCP? If I do get it then family and neighbors will need to get used to the singing, haha.
@benjefferies85316 ай бұрын
yup! Just the stuff needed for the full sung Office, that's right.
@FatherRobLyons17 күн бұрын
I am curious - was thought given to placing the Ordinary of the offices in the relative center of the book to even out wear, or do you find that the arrangement here balances that concern out over the course of time? I ask because the only Office book I’ve ever had (aside from using a BCP with a separate bible) for the Office was one of the old ECUSA Daily Office Books, and I found that it never cooperated with me in terms of laying flat.
@benjefferies853115 күн бұрын
Yes, Father - indeed thought was given to this functional/material matter. It’s not that the middle lasts longer, than say, page 100. It’s rather that the first signature (16-32 pages) receives extra wear and tear because it is attached to the end leaf and so it gets tugged on every time the book is opened. There are 65 pages of front matter prior to Morning Prayer - and so I considered this sufficiently interior to not receive extra wear and tear. And the binding was designed to lay flat on all the pages, which indeed it does. Ample gutter margin also means that content isn’t lost in the deep bend on the interior of every page. It also seemed less than desirable to me to have the Bible readings at the beginning, as an “office sandwich” - from a flow point of view. I am confident that by the time the book would wear out on the pages that contain the office - the content will have been 100% memorized by the user at that point :)

You need to make it an app, too. Then you can have embedded tones, etc.

yes, in the preface it is explained that they were extracted from the Argumenta of the Fathers, gathered by Joseph Thomasii and translated by John Mason Neale in his Commentary on the Psalms

Hi Fr, I wonder do you have a video about how the book was produced? I'm interested in learning about what programs were used for typesetting and how the sheet music was done.
@benjefferies85313 ай бұрын
I don’t have a video - but I am happy to share: The music was all engraved in MuseScore (version 3) The actual type setting and page setting was all in Adobe InDesign, and some of the images were rendered in Adobe Illustrator.

This is beautiful, and looks well-done: my complements to the editor! But not all Anglicans, and not all Books of Common Prayer, are the same. If you're just looking for a book to use for a more elaborated version of the Daily Office, and you're not too picky about which BCP it's based on, this won't matter to you; but if you're in one of the jurisdictions that uses the 1928 (US - as I am) or 1662 (UK) BCP, be aware that this is based on the 2019 Prayer Book of the ACNA. It may not be a good "fit" for those who are members of jurisdictions like the ACC, ACA, APA, APKC, or UECNA (and if you're clergy in one of those jurisdictions, it may not be authorized). Just a heads-up, for those to whom this matters!
@thomasharbold39156 ай бұрын
(If you ARE in one of the more traditional Anglican jurisdictions, The Anglican Office Book - www.youtube.com/@AnglicanOffice - is more likely what you're looking for. And no, its editor did not pay me to say that! 😉)
@benjefferies85316 ай бұрын
I just want to concur -- if traditional language is your jam (and its a great jam to have!) Lance Davis' AOB is outstanding. As for a singing resource, the best traditional language one I know is the St. Dunstan Psalter, which also has a number of canticles and smaller chant pieces in it as well. Love of the Daily Office is not a zero sum :) @@thomasharbold3915

As my husband (ACNA priest) and I were exploring the Breviary, we noticed that hymn #99 is about the Shepherd and lambs. Is it hymn #99 purposefully (as in the 99 and 1)? 😊

May I ask, how would you describe the text? Is it traditional? More modern? combination? I guess the short question would be, is it Coverdale?
@benjefferies85314 ай бұрын
The BCP 2019 text is in “modern” English only in that it doesn’t use “thee/thou” etc. it is still a beautiful hieratic English in the Prayerbook tradition (it has not been vernacularized to the 21st century)

My word, I need this. I watched Dales review, and he mentioned donations for production of the book: are these funds still needed or being collected? Obviously, I’d like to buy the book, but this work also deserves support besides sales.
@benjefferies85315 ай бұрын
Thanks for the offer, but no we are good! We just initially needed to show the publisher some seed money to prove that there was a sufficient base of interest and offset the liability, and we were able to make that happen :)
