The year was 2003, and we stopped at the Kirkside Bothy in the St Cyrus Nature Reserve by the beach. 20 years later we returned to see how much we could remember, to see how much had changed, and to see whether returning after 20 years was a good idea.
Filmed May 2023 | St. Cyrus, UK.

Great video guys, the last time we went to that gorgeous beach, we made the mistake of going from St Cyrus village high up on the clifftop. Going that way, you have a LOT of steps to get down to the sand, it was a struggle on the way back up. And we call ourselves locals eh!?

It’s interesting what you say about returning to a place after a long time. I’m a native Scot, and I’ve been living in the US since 1998, and last visited Scotland in early 2000. I had always meant to return for a visit, but between one thing and another, I didn’t visit until November last year, over 22 years AFTER my last visit. I really didn’t know what to expect from Scotland after so long. In fact, I was almost frightened that I was going to find a country I didn’t recognise. But, I am happy to say that I felt right at home within hours of landing at Edinburgh airport after an overnight flight (via Heathrow) from my local airport in Baltimore (BWI). I spend two weeks reconnecting with home again, visiting Edinburgh, Skye, Cromarty Firth, Oban, and lots of places in between, including visiting my hometown of Arbroath (twice!) for the first time since 1995. I felt tremendously lucky to have been able to come back for a visit and grateful that my home country felt so welcoming and comfortable. Truth be told, I didn’t want to come back to the US. The one thing that I will say is that being back in the town I grew up in, it felt a little surreal, and I felt a little sad because it felt like Arbroath hadn’t fared so well over the last couple of decades. The High Street in particular - so many closed shops. Still, Arbroath will always have a special place in my heart. I did shoot a bunch of video and have been meaning to edit it all together and put it up here. I just haven’t gotten around to it, yet. I’m looking forward to coming back again in October, spending more time in my old hometown, as well as visiting a few other places.

I've lived in Australia since 1982, and have made the trip as often as I can over the years. I know what you mean, I think, buy the surreal experience of visiting a hometown. I recognise the streets and buildings but for much of the time I feel like a tourist in my own homeland.

We used to holiday in Arbroath when I was a child in the early 80s and we used to take a day trip to St Cyrus. I remember walking down quite a treacherous cliff face path to get to the beach! I wonder if it is still there😂

Well done Scott and Sue. Interesting. I don't live far up the coast (ABZ) and to me St Cyrus was just a place I see marked on a road sign. You've given that sign a bit of context (if that's the right word) for me. I'll turn off and have a look soon. Thanks folks.

Hello Scotty and Sue, Thank you for the video. It all looked photogenically pleasing. Except for that headstone within it's own gates having fallen over. I regularly visit descendants graves to place flowers and ensure that nothing is wrong. But then I am nearer joining them than my cradle. 🤔 I have passed signs for St.Cyrus on the way to Clola, Aberdeenshire, and wondered. So, again, my thanks for this video.

Must be about 20 years ago that my wife and I were in the graveyard looking for her ancestors' gravestones. One of them lived where you stayed but a long time before. Found several gravestones. No rabbit burrows and no bones lying about, though. FYI hares don't make burrows so it was definitely rabbits.

St Cyrus is a lovely beach and only about 5 miles from where I live. Sorry we didn’t give you a nice bright sunny day. The cliffs there are good to spot birds nesting.
