Today's walk is just three miles down the road at the smoothly titled village of Llanrhaeadr yng Nghinmeirch - (just trips of the tongue doesn't it?), and we're looking for the ancient Holy well of St Dyfnog hidden in the woods behind the church.

Nice little video, spot on :o) The underground water source (springs, wells etc.) always come from water underground (state the obvious huh?). There is a cave in Cilcain I go to regularly that is now devoid of water and allows me to walk around underneath an old surface spring. It occurred to me then that "all" springs (and wells) are water within passages underground (or "caves"!) even if the passage is too small for a human. There is a cave higher up than St Dynog's that carries water - it's only small and the water disappears where humans cannot. I wonder if it is the same water that pops out by the well and I wonder what else is down there? :o)

Interesting stuff. Originally, the source was indeed said to emanate from a cave and produced a waterfall under which Dyfnog would sit in hairshirt and chains as a pennance (bit of a nutter?) - One report says "There are actually two springs that feed the well, having variously, and sometimes confusingly been known as Ffynnon Dyfnog and Ffynnon Fair. Lhuyd in 1698 states that Ffynnon Fair is “a little above” Ffynnon Dyfnog. The Royal Commission report in 1914 implies that Lhuyd identified the main spring as Ffynnon Fair, however it is probable that this is an incorrect assumption, and this is more likely Ffynnon Dyfnog".
