Welcome to another installment of our popularization series on medieval martial arts! This time we focus on dagger fighting as described in medieval fencing manuscripts.
Borek and Zdenál from the Digladior fencing school present the dagger fencing technique according to Fiore dei Liberi. The opponent attacks, the defender protects himself with a hand that pushes the attacker's hand to the side and down, while attacking the opponent's body with the other hand. Strikes to the abdomen or free ribs are recommended, as strikes to the head can lead to hand injuries. The technique involves manipulating the attacker's hand, switching to levers and pulling to the ground, or using knee or elbow strikes. The emphasis is on safe dagger handling and the use of weak grips. They also discuss the techniques of Hans Talhoffer, who prefers strikes to the neck rather than the head.
