I have been to Avila, where were the monasteries of St Theresa and St John. It really looked a bit like a desert, truly. I remember thinking that The aesthetics of their surroundings must have helped their way of life.

That’s correct. We (Discalced Carmelites) acknowledge him as Our Holy Father (of the Order). We celebrate his Feast Day on Dec.14th.
