St. John The Baptist Church, Royston (Barnsley)

The Church of St John the Baptist is the parish church in the village of Royston in South Yorkshire, England. It is a Church of England church in the Diocese of Leeds. The building is Grade I listed and was built in the 12th century AD.

This was the church for a truly massive rural parish. It included Royston itself, Carlton, Cudworth, Monk Bretton/Lundwood, Notton, Staincross, and other places. As the industrial revolution took hold and the canals, the mines and the railways brought massive increases in the resident population, so the parish was divided up and new parishes created. People in Cudworth for example became parishioners of the Monk Bretton parish when it was created in the nineteenth century, and had to wait until the twentieth before they had a parish of their own.
