Thanks for posting this; I enjoyed it and hope you'll do more. It might sound like commonplace advice but I think if you're having fun then you're playing Captain's Log correctly. Since you asked for specific advice, though, I'll add a couple things I learned playing it. First, there's probably enough random tables in there to do most of what you want to do, they're just not always easy to find, unfortunately. I'll often look at the appendix headings for the general concept then dive in to find a table that matches what I need. Second, it can help to really lean into the game's so-called "Core Game Flow" of narrating->rolling->narrating to keep things moving forward. For instance, if your crew decides to help with the decryption you have lots of different ways to lend aid and the outcome of your roll will create new dramatic directions for the story. For me the game works best when I am steadily increasing the stakes and trying to get into the heads of my characters as they respond to new threats. Lastly, I'd say to give yourself permission to add drama, conflicts, or whole subplots whenever and wherever you feel it's needed. The dice can lead you into fun and unexpected territory that you can then shape as you wish. Your characters taking the spotlight, overcoming challenges, and developing over time is probably one of the big draws of Captain's Log. I sincerely hope this helps and I would be happy to answer any questions or give advice to help out a fellow player.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I still have no idea what I'm doing. To be honest, I don't think the rules are laid out particularly well, but that may be my lack of RPG experience seeing it wrong. I will do more, not sure when yet though.
