His explanation of why surfing is not designed to be mainstream is one of the smartest things I have heard Bobby Martinez say. And Hes Right!

I respect bobby so much for having the balls to say hey I know what the tours best interests are and wants nothing to do with it because he knows himself that it’s not the right way to promote surfing. And he’s dead right surfing is soo much deeper than that. He is a man that knows who is and what he stands for no matter what anyone says. Family man at its finest. As much as I love occy’s backhand Bobby is on another level

So true with his comments on surfing’s incompatibility with being a mainstream sport. Surfing isn’t affordable or convenient for everyone and therefore can’t be expected to catch on globally; so we’re better off keeping it at its roots.

One of the things that got me interested in surfing was watching a show back in the late 70s, early 80s called Wild World of Sports. They aired a big waves contest and I was preteen. I was mesmerized. Even though I lived at the beach, it didn't click until I saw professional surfers. I don't like crowds either but I also like the social acceptance surfing's popularity brings. There was a time when being a surfer or more importantly looking like a surfer was looked down on. There's pros and cons to everything. 😷🇺🇸

Bobby Martinez is the most brutally honest, and yes, the best, most surgical backhand surfer to ever lay down rail. Also, (in my op-editorial view) what is missing from surfing is that raw hunger for waves that is associated with blue collar struggle experienced at a young age. When you read about champions in many sports it's often that kids with nothing, growing up without privilege, they rise to the top of their sport and dominate with a passion likely influenced by their early life. Examples: Kelly Slater; Layne Benchley; Gabriel Medina; Mike Tyson; Manny Paquiao; Floyd Mayweather; Lebron James; Cristiano Ronaldo; Marshawn Lynch Surfing in the mainland USA has quickly become a wussified sport for privileged white kids. Most of the areas on the mainland coast has been wussified, becoming a geography of the gentrified, where few of the groms coming up have experienced that hunger and need for an outlet. This is why the last mainland USA competitors to win a CT event were: Bobby Martinez and Kelly Slater Its going to be worse when surfing goes to the olympics. It won't just be at Steamer Lane where there are surf coaches yelling at junior high kids in the line up instructions on how to win their heats. Every rich soccer mom and dad on the coasts are going to start flooding the line ups with megaphones so their little johnny and jane can have a shot at a gold medal.

It’s funny to hear how much he dislikes pro surfing. The judges are fucked sometimes that’s for sure but to have a 30 minute heat a couple times a week twice a month is the dream job. That’s the only time you really have to be serious, the other 95% is free surfing. As for the wave pools and the olympics the pools suck for the most part and should only be used for training, specialty contests and people who live where the waves suck. The olympics should be held at Keramas or Lakey Peak etc.. if they want surfing to be real and exciting for the olympics shitty pools and weak beach breaks aren’t going to cut it. A lot of what he says is true but some of the shit is rich boy kinda shit

You don’t get it, bra. WSL is trying to make surfing mainstream and trying to make it big like baseball. Him being sponsored by monster is irrelevant.
@brentchurchill12174 жыл бұрын
my god he gets paid to wear monster gear its called a job! Guess what genius every pro gets paid and gets decked out in the gear of the sponsor who pays them the most. that doesn't mean there wrong about surfing never being a mainstream sport. Look what happened to skating it was a rebellious sport until the x games made it "cool" to skate. Now skating is a far cry from what it was, it is already a tennis tour and Bobbys just stating facts. No one who doesn't surf on a daily basis is goingto give a shit about 2 ft. onshore slop. The industry just wants more consumers to buy there lame overpriced clothes

Even when there's waves it's mostly a big yawn when there's only a couple contestants out: paddling paddling and wait wait wait. Civilians will be bored and basically don't get the "objective". There is no objective!..other than the aesthetic and experential. Free- surfing film edits, handshaping or a crowded day at the Lane are more audience-friendly. Mass marketing our sacred communion is so passe´. Let's focus on being exemplary simple-living environmentalist-artist-athlete-craftpersons instead.

He makes a fair point about why he didn't like to make surfing his job. But fuck me. Every day people get up and do jobs they hate. Every other day they do stuff they love. You see where I'm going with this. He's got a bad attitude coupled with sour grapes coz he never won anything. He's not even that good. I dunno why any sponsor would sign him. Seems like a hassle with little reward.
@whoaitsjape Жыл бұрын
Winning Teahupoo is not winning anything? Gtfo. Let’s see you surf that wave, let alone win a contest there. Bobby not wanting to sell out isn’t having a bad attitude. Dude has a spot on pulse on the state of surfing.
