Not a mechanic (put can keep my truck running)… but what I am is 32 yr carpenter and I’m a finish carpenter casework/mill work. For wood on truck bed I would use an epoxy to seal the bottom and the channels where the the rails sit. For the exposed upper. I’d highly recommend a stain w UV protection and a marine grade clear w a UV protection. He is right it is very important to seal every inch of the wood and using the right product to seal it that will last.

My 1st car was a 1970 GMC half ton pickup truck long bed with a manual transmission and steering

Mine was a 1970 CST/10 with a big block 402, TH 400 and a 12 bolt with posi and 4.10:1. No Ac though it has power steering. 4 wheel drum brakes. It was my dad's truck and he gave it to me in 1997. I still have it, but I blew up the 402. It has a 350 in it now. I almost lost it in the caldor fire in California about 18 months ago. It really motivated me to start restoring it. I just lost my dad to mesothelioma in August so I really want to finish it for him.

How many friends does a guy need to not have in order to justify buying a bed-lifting crane? In the barrio, that's about 24 cervezas to get 'er done. Some skirt-steak on the grill if the bolts are rusty.

Yes you can. 88- 98 short box will fit quite nicely and body lines are unbelievably correct.
