Great track and so glad that you got around to Epica. Probably would not have thrown you into this one first off as it is one of their heaviest and has more growling in it than most. Their songs have a huge range from painfully beautiful ballads like ‘Rivers’ (check out the version live with Apocalyptica) to epic symphonic rock like ‘Once Upon a nightmare’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven part 3’ from Omega Alive all of which might have been an easier step to take from Nightwish. Still you seemed to enjoy it so on that basis there is probably nothing by Epica that you would not enjoy. You should also get a fair few requests for ‘Sancta Terra’ live from the retrospect concert which features Simone and Floor singing together with a full orchestra and choir which is just heavenly.

SO..... Epica... Epica is Epic (well deserved name for the band). Classical/symphonic type of music project what was initially named "Sahara Dust" In late 2002. The name was later changed to "Epica", inspired by Kamelot's album of the same name. Singers name is Simone Simons , and she and Floor are good friends (they are both Dutch) and both classically trained . Harsh Vocals Mark Jansen, no relation to Floor Jansen, he is ex-After forever member (Floor's first band). WHEN Epica hit hard, they are heavier than Nightwish. But they also have some really beautiful, soft and tender ballads. And they often ”cover themselves” in completely different styles (jazz, Irish folk, klezmer…). Being familiar with most of their stuff, they still keep me amazed by their talent and epicness, which is just keep growing for almost 20 years. It’s like too much to be from this world, especially when you realize they have about 10 masterpieces in this scale, ballads that will make you cry, countless top-notch badass songs, great covers, orchestral and acoustic versions, insightful lyrics and great stage presence.. enough talent for 20 bands combined. And.. they’re so down-to-earth and generous to their fans. Epica fan's are Epicans . In That Note: Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show kzbin.info/www/bejne/mamVY4yrn5ehsMk EPICA - Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3 - (ΩMEGA ALIVE) (OFFICIAL VIDEO) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJWldImDeZ2Hn68 NWSU/Epican/Ayreonaut 🤘😎🤘. And the fun thing: it is all intertwined: Epica is named after an album of Kamelot and founded by Mark Jansen (screamer guy) after he had to leave After Forever where at the time Floor Jansen (not related to Mark) was the lead singer. Years later Simone (the redhead) got married to one of the band members of ...Kamelot. The same Kamelot whose vocalists stood in for Nightwish's previous lead singer at the 'Denver Debacle' after which Floor became the lead singer of Nightwish. Oh, and of course all of them and many more join in of the massive collab project of Ayreon. (still with me?)

@@beldin2987 I quote from Elize's Wikipedia: "She also gained some popularity prior to the band's inception by performing guest vocals for the American power metal band Kamelot, both on tour and in the studio" I quote from Alyssa's Wikipedia: "she has appeared as a guest vocalist for power metal, symphonic metal and deathcore bands, notably Kamelot," Though, of course one could debate about the semantics of the words "member of". If you 're singing with the band, are you part of the band? They were there in Denver to sing with Kamelot. But as far as i know they were indeed never offered permanent position in the band. For me that validates the claim they were vocalists for Kamelot, but I could see how one could disagree.

Epica took their name from a 2003 Kamelot album title. I discovered them on their 2007 album ‘The Divine Conspiracy’, and I eventually got to hear them live at a tiny local venue here in St. Louis in 2014. Simone Simons recently turned 39, so she was still a teen when the band started. Mark Jensen does most of the harsh vocals. The keyboardist, Cohen, does love to wander during performances, even into the crowd, and sometimes uses a curved wireless keyboard that hooks to his belt.

As many have already suggested, next should be Epica live at the Retrospect (anniversary concert) with Floor Jansen as guest vocalist on a couple of songs. (Floor is a former bandmate of Mark Jansen, and an old friend of vocalist Simone Simons.) Their song Sancta Terra (performed with a full live orchestra and backing choir) is the most beautiful song about a suicide bomber that wakes up in Hell. From the same concert Simone and Floor sing a classical song about grief, composed in the last weeks of Pergolesi's life before he died at the age of 26. It is a lament told from the point of view of Mary standing under the crucified body of her son. I think it perfectly encapsulates the relationship between metal and classical music, and you can see how breathless and silent the audience of avowed metalheads is. After that you need to react to Ayreon "The Day That The World Breaks Down" which features both Simone and Floor (and another 9 main singers!) and you will start to get an idea of how cooperative and interconnected the European metal scene is!

"creative"? "diverse"? They have been formulaic since Design your Universe. Even nightwish showcase more diversity with their last albums. Epica is generic. "Sophisticated"? They just play verse-chorus 90% of the time. Their orchestral mnelodies are badly composed and all sound samey. Guitars are mostly just chugging. Simone is (or rather used to be) out of tune live constantly.

@@MrSh0110 I know all of their discography. They have their moments. I even used to call myself a fan.But the more I listened, the more disillusioned i became. Their "diversity" is expressed by each album having poppy songs and heavier songs. That's not diverse, that's a formula. Structurally, their songs are simplistic. Verse -chorus-verse- chorus- intricate bridge- chorus, with emphasis on catchy vocals. That's also formulaic. The only album where they had some unorthodox structures was Requiem ( and no surprise, that's the one fans liked the least) . About riffs, first albums were just mindless chugging. After Issac came, they became a little more nuanced , albeit still being mostly palm-muted open string chuggs. They will play some heavier riff here and there in the intro of the song, but when the verse starts, it becomes rhythmic chugg again. This is true of 90%of their songs. When it comes to orchestra, there was a bigger emphasis on it on the first albums, and i think it was great back then. But now it's just simplistic layrering to add more effect to the music. Bands like Nightwish, Therion and Septicflesh actually have competent orchestral compositions. Finally, about Simone's voice, it's no secret she was really bad live for many years ( i would argue she is even mediocre on the stufio albums). She has improved as of late, but it took her way too long. It's obvious that for many years she cared more about her looks rather than training her voice. Overall, i think their only worthwhile songs are the long, progressive ones that Mark composes ( kingdom of heaven etc...)

@@nikosv95 I see you invest lots of time and effort on analyzing and writing about a band you dislike. Weird but I appreciate that. As I said, music is a matter of personal taste. Different people experience and interpret it in different ways. I don’t tend to waste my time on bands I don’t appreciate. Also, personally I find the bands you mentioned quite boring despite of having so called “competent orchestral compositions”.

@@MrSh0110 Yeah, it's pretty common for people to dismiss well composed music as "boring" just because it's not accessible or commercial enough. Therion and Haggard are compositionally superior to all those formulaic " symphonic pop metal" bands like Epica. What is even more annoying is that people will call these bands " creative, diverse, artistic and sophisticated".

That's really cool that you reacted to this song! 💟Definitely a classic from Epica (this song is almost 20 years old!) and may I say from the symphonic metal genre. I suggest to check these others songs : Unchain Utopia, Code of Life or Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3 from Omega Alive (but it's not a real live with an audience, but this it still very enjoyable to watch )... Next band to react to : Within Temptation ! 💟

Welcome to the glorious world of Epica, Nightiwsh's darker, heavier and more symphonic cousin. Consign to Oblivion is often suggested as a first song but usually not me first listen song for new listeners unless they are already metalheads. One of their heaviest songs and unusual in that Simone's part is much smaller then usual. The combination of Simone's beautiful soprano and Mark's harsh vocals is called beauty and the beast style. Next I would recommend Unleashed live from their 10th anniversary Retrospect concert. There is a newer live video of the song from last year at AFAS but I prefer the Retrospect liver version because of the live orchestra and choir on stage with the band. Also just about anything from the pandemic era livestream show, Omega Alive is fantastic. Unchain Utopia, The Skelton Key, Rivers, Once Upona Nightmare, and their Magum Opus, Kingdom of Heaven Part 3. Epica also has a number of beautiful ballads where Simone's beautiful vocals can really shine. Once Upon a Nightmare, Tides of Time, Rivers, and Chasing the Dragon are all great. Fun fact Epica will be having 3 concerts with a live orchestra and choir for the first time in 10 years. As the band has said a once in a decade event.

You should check out In This Moment - The In-Between. Love Epica btw... all their songs are great. Facade of Reality and Cry for The Moon are two of my favorites from Epica, they give me the chills but in a good way.

Generally speaking, the best music being made today is being made by Dutch bands. The Gathering (with and without Anneke), Delain (with and without Charlotte), Within Temptation, Kingfisher Sky, Stream of Passion, Ayreon (and all Arjen Anthony Lucassen's various side projects), Autumn, and bands now defunct: Nemesea, After Forever, ReVamp ... there is a very deep well to dive into. And even if you choose to limit your exploration to only Arjen Lucassen and Anneke van Giersbergen and their career exploits, you still have a lifetime of exploration ahead of you.

IMO Mark Jansen (friends with but not related to Floor Jansen) has the most versatile growl on this planet: from low heavy to more light almost satanic growling😮

Check out Epica Retrospective show, song Sancta Terra feat. Floor Jansen. Simone Simons Epica’s fantastic lead singer and Floor Jansen ( Nightwish) have been friends for years. It’s amazing. Nightwish fans love Epica and visa versa! Great reaction again! God Bless Rock on Stay Safe!🙏🤘🤘🤘

We are called Epicans (the Epica fans)! I am already looking forward (and being a bit impatient) to the concert at Afas Live in Amsterdam next september where they will be performing with a symphonic orchestra! Can’t wait…..

Very cool that you reacted to this, it a great song indeed! A suggestion for a next one, since you can appreciate heavier songs... Try Wintersun (they also have the same drummer as Nightwish) with their song 'Time' recorded at Sonic pump studios. It's a fantastic melodic metalband with great vocals and great musicianship and somehow not many reaction channels pay attention to them and they deserve so much more recognition... The song is fantastic and it will not dissapoint.

Lots of people are recommending Epica’s longer songs (and my vote would be for Design Your Universe over any of the Kingdom if Heaven suite), but there’s a case that their songwriting is shown to its best advantage in some of the shorter songs like Skeleton Key, Unleashed, Our Destiny (strangely overlooked by reaction channels) or Rivers.
