This is one of the songs where Marko has the lead vocals, also in "While your lips are still red" (Wembley 2015, also here Floor sings the backvocals) or - only Marko - the tribute to Pink Floyd "High Hopes" (End of an era 2005). I am sure you will enjoy also these two other songs. And I am also sure that all Nightwish fans know how talented he is and love him. Nightwish always has been a so-called female fronted band but since Marko joined the band in 2001 Tuomas gave him many opportunities for at least big singing parts within several songs. For this song "The Islander" Marko has written the music and Tuomas added the lyrics.

Troy is playing an instrument in the whistle sub genre which is in turn part of the flute family. Whistles are blown from the end, traditional flutes are blown from the side. This is a song written by Marco. It was written around the Anette era. There is a music video of it, but she is almost unheard. This song is very calm and nice.

Agreed considering the fangirl we have here for PinkFloyd. @StaceyRPG it is CRUCIAL you hear the version of Hartwall Arena, Helsinki - Finland On October 21st, 2005. The reason is that this was sung in Tarja's last concert, after which Tuomas gave her the band's letter. Trust me, it has a different tone and meaning.

Marko Hietala (bass & vocals) is actually the most experienced of the Nightwish members... He debuted in 1986 in the band Tarot - a Finnish metal band that Tuomas (keyboards) was a fan of... Marko also played in the band Sinergy w/ singer Kim Goss and Children of Bodom's (late) guitarist Alexi Laiho. In 2002, Nightwish fired their bassist and needed a quick replacement... Marko Hietala joined and Tuomas was very honored that a veteran musician would be a part of Nightwish. He asked Marko to do the male vocals and he made his debut on Nightwish's 2002 album 'Century Child'. According to Marko, the Nightwish fans gave him grief initially because they did not want to see this hairy guy singing next to Tarja. Marko Hietala recently released a solo album 'Pyre of the black heart' in 2020 (It was recorded in Finnish as well)... He said he was frustrated w/ the business behind the band when he quit Nightwish in 2021... he seemed to want to focus more on his solo music. One of the first things Marko did was reconcile w/ original Nightwish singer Tarja... They recorded a new single together ('Left on Mars') and recently toured together.

It is unfortunate that Marko left Nightwish, but for me it makes every performance that he did with them that much more precious. He gave the band and us as fans 20 years of his life. A lot of that was on tour, bringing music to us where we live, whether to huge festivals or to small indoor venues. Touring is not easy and requires a lot of sacrifice. Yet Marko and the rest of the band always seem to have smiles on their faces wherever they are performing. We know about some of the trials that he had to go through while he was with the band, and I'm sure there were a whole bunch that we don't know about. Nor should we. Let us be thankful for the age we live in where his performances with Nightwish have been captured like lightning in a bottle to be enjoyed by generations to come.

Enjoyed your reaction! Music written by Marko. He decided it didn't fit with his band Tarot, so he brought it to Nightwish and Tuomas added the lyrics. Music video is pretty cool as well but doesn't have Floor's beautiful backing vocals. Other versions of this performance include Marko talking to the crowd, basically throwing shade at the other band members for abandoning him on stage to entertain 20, 000 fans, thus his smile when they come back in. By the way your pronunciation of Tampere was pretty good. Others have mentioned the usual Marko lead singer songs (I absolutely love While Your Lips are Still Red live from Wembley) but I will recommend my favorite Marko song, Endlessness, from their last album Human Nature. Last song on Disc 1 and teh last song Marko recorded/sang with Nightwish. No live version but the lyric version is awesome, especially because Tuomas's lyrics are so poetic and thought provoking. Here is another example of Marko's sweet side. I love Marko also, his voice is awesome!! i really miss him since he left the band but Troy is doing a wonderful job backing up Floor now. I`m always here for Nightwish reactions. Another band that does this type of music is Within Temptation they are Dutch. I recommend them also.

Smaller stages now , he did tour with Tarja is South America , and they live 40 km away from each other in Spain . Next concert hes in may be Raskasta Joulua 2024 (Heavy Xmas) its 20th time, so bet hes in there, in December. He may be in local concert in Kuopio in summer, hes usually backstage with Turmion Kätilöt, Kuopio rock is 27 July. Marko and the first male vocalist of Nightwish Tapio Wilska, are helping smaller bands, Tapio has been seen in Fear of Domination backstage.

Unfortunatly this video did not have Marko’s introduction, that gives a bit of context to the smile on his face once the band joins in. Already suggested “While your lips are still red “( Wembley 2015) and the Pink Floyd tribute “High Hopes” 2005 ( End of an Era ) are not to be missed, but I would also like to suggest “Endlessness” (lyric video from the last album) the last Marko+ Nightwish song its the last song of of Human :||: Nature and one of my favourite Nightwish songs

A flute is held transversely and played by blowing across the hole. This is a whistle, blown directly into the hole. In this case the Irish Low Whistle in D flat. Marco is a great guitarist as well as bassist and vocalist. Have you done While Your Lips Are Still Red from Wembley 2015? And of course, ultimate Marco, High Hopes from Hartwall Arena 2005. Try some of Marco's solo work too - you could start with The Voice of My Father.

Sadly Marko left the band not long after I booked my tickets to see them here in England and I was gutted. Due to covid we didnt get to see them till well over a year later in November 22 but they were still fantastic, however I did miss him and his voice. I will go to see them again when they tour. I love Floor's professionalism in this song where she sings back up vocals and never overpowers Marko. We all know she can, but she actually just sings her part. I have massive respect for the comfort of the band to do this. Also, Marko had an operation to remove a polyp from his vocal cords that went wrong and that's why Floor never overpowers him. He basically lost his ability for falsetto/head voice and had to relearn how to sing to get around the problems caused by the operation. He has done that brilliantly.

Marko had that surgery in 1996 and had already learned to sign again so I don't think that Floor never overpowers him because of that. Also I've heard that Marko said, that when Floor joined the band he didn't have to hold back anymore so he wouldn't overpower the lead singer

What I read about this song is that Marko wrote a demo of "The Islander" but didn't feel like it was a good fit for his first band, Tarot, so he offered it to Tuomas. I saw Nightwish in 2012 and saw this "The Islander" performed live. It was a wonderful experience with the entire crowd smiling and singing along, some of us had our arms over each other's shoulders and we were swaying together, and there was a such a feeling of unity among all of us for that one song. It was a great feeling. If you'd like to see and hear some sea shanties, I _strongly_ recommend the Sea Shanty Medley from Home Free. It's a fun video filmed during the dark times of quarantine and has 41 million views in three years. Since you've played Black Flag, you might recognize a few of the songs included.

So, me being a complete rock/metal nerd, if you're a fan of Marko in Nightwish, I'd recommend checking out his band Tarot. They were the band he fronted before joining Nightwish and just started fronting again and are considered to be one of the earliest metal bands from Finland. They're more straightforward heavy metal as opposed to the grand symphonic metal style of Nightwish. Marko actually got introduced to Nightwish when they opened for Tarot back in the 90's. He had stated that he liked the sound of the music but did not feel they had good stage presence back then, stating that Tarja seemed really nervous onstage and the other guys just stood there playing without much feel. He even went so far as to say he thought they were just a fad that would disappear within 6 months to a year. He also stated that he was glad that his initial thoughts on the band were proven wrong. But anyway, Tarot's really cool. Their song "Wings of Darkness" is probably their signature and would be a good track to start with.

Also not many seem to get? Marco had Floor as a backup singer, essentially…there have been a bare, very humans who would accomplish that, and it be worthwhile. And that speaks so much about the group and individuals that they even would consider/let alone do. You just don’t get a world class vocalist/band front to be be a supporting role, out of no where. It's hard to beat Marko's vocals, then there's his bass and guitar play. Good Lord the guy is amazing. That double neck is one beautiful piece as well. Marko kills it on "High Hopes" from End of an Era concert. Floor and Troy kill it on "My Walden" from Tempere. Another beautiful song. Floor will grab your soul with "Sleeping Sun" at Tempere also.
