STACK & TILT | IS STACK & TILT A REVERSE PIVOT?

The term “reverse pivot” has been around in golf for as long as anyone can remember. But what does it actually mean? And why is it viewed in such a negative way?
The term “reverse pivot” seems to broadly describe the body weight of a golfer moving too much towards the target in the backswing, then moving away from the target in the downswing and follow-through. This goes against traditional wisdom that the golfer’s weight should shift away from the target on the backswing, then towards the target on the downswing and follow-through. I would strongly argue that neither of these options is optimal, nor is it what the best player’s do.
Stack & Tilt prescribes a centred turn in the backswing (no shifting of the weight back or forward), followed by a progressive shifting of the lower centre (hips) towards the target throughout the downswing and follow-through. This is the pattern demonstrated by the best players in the game as it helps them to control the number 1 fundamental - CONTACT.
The less skilled golfer struggles to control contact because they never fully learn or understand how far FORWARD their weight needs to be to be successful.
This video will explain how Stack & Tilt is most definitely NOT a reverse pivot, and how learning to fully embrace the WEIGHT FORWARD concept of Stack & Tilt will unlock your potential and transform your ball striking.

Rob this is a great video. I embraced Stack and Tilt about 6 months ago and it transformed my game. I will soon be 81y.o. And shoot lower than my age every 2-3 rounds. Lowest 73. Also picked up 20 yards off the tee.

Rob ur a 100% correct about a lot of so called coaches being against Stack and Tilt because they only know how to follow a manual. The idea that something might be better than what their training manual recommends is far too much for their robotic minds to comprehend.

I brought the Stack & Tilt book in 2010 and it has been on my bookshelf after viewing it briefly. I was 59 and will be 70 this coming December. I started watching your videos, along with Nick Taylor, Tom Saguto, & Jess Frank, and attracted to the idea of eliminating back pains from the standard golf swing loading the body twisting for power. After two practice sessions with the S&T, I haven’t experienced any back pain at all. I now have power in my wedges which didn’t exist before! I just got a copy of the Stack & Tilt DVD’s and reviewing the instructions. I will never go back to the regular teaching of the normally accepted golf swing! 👍

Rob, thanks very interesting. For years I was told to get the weight on the right (trail) leg which resulted in swaying and then flipping / slicing with too much weight on the right leg at impact. Stack and tilt makes a lot a sense, will try to change and hopefully improve my ball strike.

Rob, I started practicing S&T during the winter at the indoor ranges this past winter and I believe I am seeing good results. I played golf on Tuesday after a 6 week lockdown shot an 84 and eagled a par 5. Next day I shot a 79 with 3 birdies. I'm a 12-14 handicap based on last years stats. I watch you, Tom S, Nick T, Frank G, and Jonathan K and I find all the instructions very clear and informative.

Hey Rob, Since watching your videos my last 3 rounds have been in the 70's. I can't thank-you enough for all I have learned and what I already knew you gave me the reinforcement that I needed. An under par round is my goal this year, I know its possible with a great short game which I am working on. I like your aimpiont , chipping and sand trap videos. I never seen anyone teach your style of footing in the sand trap and it works every time, seems so easy to get the ball out and close to the hole now. I still plan on going to GolfTec once everything opens up for a fitting. If your ever in So. California, golf and lunch are on me.

I always wondered this, the concept seems like it's a reverse pivot but I think yah, the key is you never go to your right side...start left, stay left...it really doesn't seem like it's that different than a conventional swing...it just really helps with side bend and staying centered...

Rob. You really really really need to do a video talking specifically about “reverse angle”, not just the reverse pivot. The first is a common high handicapper problem, the latter is seen in good golfers, including Fred Couples. You can play excellent golf with a reverse spine angle but it’s not if, but when, you get lower back pain. The overdoing the hyper extension at the top of the back swing gets you more distance, but at a price, especially in the older golfer with facet joint osteoarthritis. I am a senior citizen physician, TPI certified, and former medical director at the champions tour tournament here in Calgary. I have attended SNT and worked with Andy, as well as the local Golftec folks. I have never had a reverse pivot, but I certainly tend to try and hyper extend and demonstrate a reverse spine angle when I try to hit it further. Somebody needs to clearly demonstrate online the difference between a reverse pivot and a reverse spina angle and why overdoing it in the stack and tilt swing with hyper extension can be a problem, especially, as it’s not required to play good golf. Happy to chat with you further in this regard. This remains one of the most misunderstood topics regarding golf and back pain. Dr Rick Zabrodski, Calgary

@@golftecasia I agree. I am old but flexible. Both Steve Sieracki, and later, Andy Plummer, both pointed this personal tendency out to me years ago. That’s why I still was able to shoot 72 twice at the age of 65 during Covid, despite only taking up golf with my son in my late 40’s and being full of osteoarthritis! You are the go to KZbin golf guy that I recommend, as you give among the best detailed and anatomically precise explanations. A quick google will clearly suggest that the reverse pivot is routinely seen (mistakenly) as similar to a reverse spine angle in the backswing. The algorithm, many instructors, and several golf pundits are all wrong! We therefore need a dedicated Rob Cheney video dealing with exactly what the reverse spine angle is, and why (despite certain still photographs and the SNT instruction video of Andy working with Grant W. demonstrating an increase ball speed by doing it) it is not what you or Andy or any SNT instructor would advocate. This would help to clear up the urban myth about SnT and back pain and might prevent some future back pain. Maybe even ask Andy for his video of me in my late 50s, intentionally demonstrating how it is possible to over due it, even in an old guy! In any case, we need a definitive video from you clearing this up once and for all. I will then be happy send you a couple of Shaw Charity Classic Champions tour hats from Calgary! Thanks!

Really good vlog, thanks Rob!! The weight forward idea is something I always embraced, but I was tarred with reverse pivot, put me off it for years. So pleased it isn't a bad thing. The inside back swing tho, with shoulder down, it is just a feel thing how much inside you take the club?

Hi Rob, great video. Thank you. I really kindly need your opinion. In backswing, I take my trailing hip back while I stay central. What else I do is: my trailing leg straightens namely. towards the target. Now my question is is it o.k to have almost no knee flex. I know that straighten of trailing leg is no problem at all but what about no knee flex at all?. What I do from this angle described above is move lateral and release my right side (right knee towards the left side ) ...So not anymore left hip turn ... This motion is giving me good results than shifting weight to the right and then to left....I would be happy to hear your thoughts. Thank you

Hello. More often I incorrectly revert the upper part with wedges, no matter set 80/20 up. My head tilts back ugly. Any cure or a new vid on weight transfer with short irons? You mention hips forward before left shoulder and left hip do or leaning left side ( three parts at once)?

Rob here is something I found interesting and I think you might as well (unless you have already seen it): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXPaZ4RjZ9Z5fdU . In the first part of this video, NIck (a Golftec guy as well) who was some years ago an S&T instructor (I watched a whole series of his videos back in the day) is explaining some things to Faxon about his swing. What is strange is that Faxon is in the S&T DVDs, and yet Nick is telling him to do what Mike and Andy had told him all those years ago (in this case straightening the right leg on the back swing and not lifting his arms so high--sound familiar :-)). I guess it's true that all that goes around comes around :-)
