"KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL" is probably the most common piece of golfing advice that has been spoken since the dawn of the game itself. But should you really "keep you head still"?
This concept can often be misinterpreted by golfers as they are taught to keep their heads down, keep both eyes on the ball or point their chin at the ball - all of which lead to multiple other problems throughout the swing such as SHORT BACKSWINGS, BENT ARMS/CHICKEN WING, POOR RANGE OF MOTION (adding stress to the body), and many, many other issues.
Should you keep you head relatively steady throughout the swing? YES. Completely still? NO. This video explores the less discussed topic of NECK TILTS and how tilting your neck or head during the swing is vital if you are to achieve the full range of movement in the backswing and the follow-through and produce a swing that is less stressful on your body.
Stack & Tilt prescribes a motion of the swing centre (left shoulder) on a circular arc on a tilted plane around a stable hub (upper centre). To accomplish this the ENTIRE spine extends, tilts and turns. The cervical spine is the most mobile spinal segment, fixing it in place presents an ANATOMICAL BLOCK to the attainment of a full backswing.
Want to add more distance and increase your shoulder turn like you're 20 years younger? Then watch the video and add the neck tilts to your swing.

This tip is awesome! This has made a huge impact on my ball flight. No one has ever talked about that that I have seen. Neck tilt instruction should be the starting pointing when talking tilt, not as an afterthought. Huge lesson!!! Thank you!

This is a fabulous tip…and for us older players a must do…thank you Rob for finally showing and explaining how vital neck tilt is in the golf swing…I first noticed it by watching Anika and yes Jack’s tilt as he sets up.

WOW! I have never thought that head movement has so much to do with restrictions of both back swing and follow through. While watching your instructions I can feel much more flow in my swing. Wow. Thank you. Rob. You are the best as always. 👍👍👍

Just found Rob online. The components of stack and tilt…from the neck tilt all the way down to flaring the feet…have improved my game immensely. They just feel natural and improve my ball striking. Thanks Rob. Golf can be frustrating, so it’s great to have such valuable instruction available online.

A eureka video for me! I hadn’t completely understood stack and tilt until this, largely because the face-on views that I had previously seen did not really show the tilts. However, your video also has the down the line views that perfectly demonstrate the tilts. Now I understand why I read somewhere that one should imagine that water is spilling out of your left ear in the backswing. This provided the missing link for me, as I was now able to understand the concept viscerally and visually. Thank you very much! As an additional note, I got out of my chair after watching this video, and could not believe how much more turn I was able to get in my backswing! Can’t wait to get a video of my inclination to the ground now also during both turns! Simply brilliant.

I think this would help a lot of older golfers that have been taught to keep their head down and take that advice literally and in doing so unintentionally restrict their backswing. A very good video that will benefit me and lots of club golfers. Keep up the good work Rob 👍🏻

Great video Rob! For too long we have been told 'don't move the head or else!" and yet we see pros have their head on a swivel. I've seen a marked improvement in my ability to attack from the inside allowing me to release through the impact zone vs. coming in too steep and having to hold off and hence hitting a weak shot.

Great tip Rob. As I turn on the back swing, I try and rest my chin over the left shoulder;this automatically tilts my head to the left, and allows a freer longer back swing. On the down swing the chin rests on the right shoulder making the head tilt to the right and stay that way up to and beyond release.

I needed this, thank you Rob! I don’t tilt at all in the backswing, I actually lift my chin over my shoulder and it looks really funky. I hit it well, but it looks like my head bobs a lot in the swing. I’m surely leaving some power on the table.

this is a great tip! by accident, i did this move earlier today at the driving range while practicing stack and tilt and it worked wonders. i am pretty tight up top so i cant swing as far back as i would like. max half swing before i start lifting. But doing the head tilt gave me a bit more depth in my back swing without the whole body lifting up. Got much more distance as a result. I wish more instructors taught this. I was always just trying to keep my head still before with arm tucked under chin before. now i am more consistent with making solid contact.

Nice work as ever my friend. Really good videos that I always like to see and pass on to others too. What difference do you think eye dominance has on this? Right eye dominant golfers would find it harder to achieve that neck tilt in backswing?

Great topic that I am always confused about and you explained well. I have a question though, all the pros look at the ball during backswing, are they already presetting their head like you explained or the movement is so small that is not that noticeable? Thanks.

Excellent explanation and I’ve not heard this level detail on neck tilts before. Thanks you for sharing. For someone that had a 2 level cervical fusion, would you recommend any changes. I find maintaining follow-through tilts to much stress on the neck.

Great video. Can you state the range, in degrees of rotation, of the amount of neck/head turn you would like to see in the back swing? What are the parameters? Looks like somewhere around 20 degrees or so. Is that a good number? Thanks again. Good stuff to know as we get older and find ourselves still wanting to play as much as ever.

Great video! Will tilting the neck make it easier to keep the trail elbow in front of the body? I have been working the drill from your elbow video and find it very difficult to do. BTW - have been focused on keeping my head still for 50 years - early training pounded into my head and tough to shake.

Do not forget about the eyes. Most people feel comfort n control when both eyes are focused on the target. Proper tilting forces one eye focus almost to peripheral. When the brain doesnt like that, it freezes the head and now limits the top of swing.

Hi Rob, amazing video... I turn my head in backswing, my neck is tilted to the left the way you show in your video. When backswing ends, my eye line is tilted so that my eyeline is not looking to the ground anymore which means I do lose the ball contact at that moment. When you swing İn your video at 8:40, there is not so much neck tilt ..your eyeline is still down...so I am wondering if I am doing too much tilt with my neck...Does it matter or should I keep that way?..Thank you so much.
