Today’s tour brings us down memory lane yet again!
This time, we explore the enchanting five-foot walkways of Emerald Hill, complete with a little refreshing twist at the end (wink).
For those of us who’ve visited this quaint little neighbourhood, you’d likely remember the rows upon rows of charming 1900 shophouses in the area - many of which come adorned in stunning Baroque Chinese architecture.
The beautiful facades signify a harmonious blend of historical and modern day works. So much so that it’s hard to believe that this was once a nutmeg plantation - especially since it’s located right beside the busiest road in Singapore.
In this episode, we unravel bits of historical details about this captivating neighbourhood. Little details that might be lost in the sands of time as these alluring shophouses transition from one generation to the next.
Of course, no shophouse neighbourhood tour isn’t complete without an actual shophouse tour, so we set about exploring a very special unit at the end - courtesy of our wonderful friends over at Figment.

Future generations would thank you for breathing a fresh lease of excitement into these icons of our heritage, while respecting its historical, cultural and social significance. How else would we relate to the past if it’s not given a tinge of the present and a hint of the future to come? That’s what I like best about your projects, they represent a labour of love that is part preservation, part restoration and a whole lot of education. It would be a privilege to explore, experience and express my excitement towards this gem of the nation that you have marvelled forth for us. And for that humbling opportunity, I thank you.

My favourite part of the Library House is the way it reminds me of my grandparents’ shophouse in Malaysia. The video transported me back to more than a decade and a half ago where we’d use to gather at my grandparents’ during the new year. It’s lovely that the important elements are kept intact, with updates made to balance an elevated, more relevant design for the Library House’s current function. Thanks for the tour-it’s mesmerising through your lens so I can only imagine how awesome it’d be to actually get to stay in the Library House and experience this ourselves!

I myself grew up and spent my younger years living in a shophouse so this definitely brings back some memories albeit it looking a little more eclectic than my old home. What I loved about the Library House was all the little pockets of space that you can go to work, read a book or just chill. I also liked how Figment had manage to preserve most of the details of what makes these shophouses unique.

What a fantastic walkthrough. Apart from Reuben's always professional and enjoyable presentation style, may I commend the edit on this upload for leaving in the sounds of the birdlife calling in the background. It compliments the friendly vibe enormously. I imagine Haruki Murakami would be very pleased to have this eclectic space named in his honour.

my childhood years were spent in a shophouse; not the heritage-looking or art deco-styled ones shown in the video, but one closer to a modern shophouse in the infographic. On the ground level, it sat a stationery shop, and the second level was where my family and I lived in. It’s a longggg time ago but I vividly remember the really generous stationery shop uncle would offer free Pilot pens to my siblings and I, and my mom would thank him with home-cooked food. Looking back now over a decade, it was a really simple yet heartwarming time back then, and the neighbourly spirit is one that we don’t see often anymore sadly. Watching this video brings back so much fond memories, and I really love how Figment brings new perspectives to shophouses as well; showing how culture and modernity could co-exist in such harmony 🥺❤️ Fav spot would hands down be the cozy corner with the beanbag overlooking the 30year old bonsai tree!!!! I hope that one day I’ll be able to reclaim that childhood shophouse (that was once lived in by my maternal grandparents before my parents bought it over), refurbish it, and live in it for years to come. For now, I’ll just be satisfied watching video tours of revamped shophouses 🤣

I always loved the whole stretch along emerald hill, a quieter orchard section tucked away in a quaint street. The shophouse exterior gives it a really nice, local nostalgic 1900s feel. The library house space is very well-planned given it has a long, well-lit communal area while the rooms, especially the murukami room that has its own quaint privacy yet the decor gives it a very home-y feel! Love any home with wooden stairs 😍😍 and it was nice to watch such an interesting tour!

Absolutely loved the quaint, "home away from home" feel of the Emerald Hill. The Library House is an unadulterated gem. From the dark wooden interior, to how little Peranakan touches were incorporated into the house, to the pretty Bonsai. What a treat it would be to have a little getaway 3D2N style with Figment. Transport me back into the 1920s! Thoroughly enjoyed the video, start to finish. The host, Reuben has voice like smooth, hot chocolate. Moreover, the way he effortlessly educated us on the bits of history of EH neighbourhood. We love to be schooled. Stacked Homes team, great job with the film shots and edits. I see some aerial footages. A* for effort. Please keep the videos coming! * A little update: I shared this video with my Ah Ma, and she said seeing the interiors of the shophouse, brought her back to her younger days when she stayed in a shophouse. She shared about how she and her many other siblings would compete over the use of the toilet. It was great hearing her reveal snippets of her past. Sacred grandma and grandchild bonding time.

My old company used to be in the building right behind the shophouse. And I loved walking through this area to go out for lunch. It would be great if you could feature the shophouse next to it too. Watching this episode I learned something new about shophouses and their different iteration...my paternal grandparents came from Indonesia and settled in Bussorah Street, No.37... I now can date that to the 1840s... It is said that we are a nation of immigrants, but when you move from one place to another in Nusantara, even across seas, I think that is hardly called emigrating. Indeed knowing that tells us how old our family history us and how rooted to this island we have been... Thanks.Great episode.

I love everything about the library house! From the history and architecture to its gorgeous interior design giving it that very homely rustic vibe, feels modern yet nostalgic at the same time! Can we just talk about the size of the place!? WOW! Figment is doing amazing rejuvenating these shophouses, breathing new life into them. Gorgeously done up homes and an absolute dream to live in, must be wonderful if you're a tourist here with a few friends, because this would be perfect!

Another great video Reuben. I love that even the bonsai tree that they chose to put in the courtyard is itself aged and with some history. Everything in this wonderful building has history and substance - from the tiles to the doors.

Always wanted to experience how it is like living in a shophouse in SG. Love this video as a sneak preview of how living in this space will be. The lighting throughout the house is really good, bright and airy interior design makes it nice and cozy and a wonderful place to come home to at the end of the day :)

I love how the house brings back wonderful memories of watching TV shows on channel 8 of old singapore during the colonial era (like Tofu street!) but also manages to stay modern and updated. The bonsai plant in the airwell is such a unique and important feature of the house - i can smell how fresh the air must smell! Hope that my partner and i would be able to get a chance to have staycation there!

I love the vintage vibes, not just the shop house but the surroundings and the rich history. Wooden beams are my favourite feature in any home, I wished I could install wooden beams on my HDB ceiling, but I know it's near impossible.

Never knew of how much history was packed within Central Singapore! And what a sight to see a shop house like that around the area as well! Can't believe I've lived here majority of my life and never knew of its existence. Love the contradicting exterior and interior feel of the Library House. Interior reminds me of a modern version of my family's ancestral home in Malaysia! Making me miss the trips back to our family home 🥰

It’s so amazing that these shophouses rich with heritage is nestled right in the heart of modern orchard road. And I think the Library House is a beautiful reflection of how tradition and modernity can blend so beautifully together - the modern classic interior colours/materials/decor, with the Peranakan windows and ventilation portal and not forgetting the 30yr old bonsai! Would love the opportunity to stay here, draw some interior inspiration for my future home!

People need to appreciate shophouses more and this video just does it. Thanks for making this video, i really loved seeing the history you shared behind Emerald Hill. The setting of the Murakami room got me the most because it gave me vibes from his book “Norwegian Wood” and also the 森 feels especially with the Bonsai Tree and the mixture of granite and timber. Excellent video!

Impressive work done on the shoot, it captures the feel and nostalgic element of the shophouse as well as Figment's cosy stylish decor that really entertains and make the occupants feel well taken care of. And I really love the stories behind the architectural history of shophouses and its origins. That is very educational and Im going to show my children, hopefully learn some history of our early settlements. Fantastic homework done right there by Stacked. Will really love to experience Figment's coliving and in fact, I have bookmarked this video for ideas when I next do my renovation design. Thanks for sharing this wonderful work!

I’m really impressed with the interior design of the Library House. The tone, colors, furniture pieces really sets itself apart from any other shophouse accommodation! My favorite area would have to be the bonsai tree in the middle of the house. It gives off that rustic, away from home vibes (almost kind of Japanese modern contemporary feel). Really impressive! Would love to experience the Library House with my wife for our upcoming anniversary!

Thank you for this video, definitely interesting to understand the history of Singapore’s heritage shophouses! My grandma used to stay in a shophouse in Craig Road, Tanjong Pagar & she often share her fond memories staying there when she was a young kid. It makes me wonder as to how big families stay & mingle together in such a small shared space :) I loved the Library House that you’ve brought us around because of the modern & Peranakan interior design and surely makes me want to relive my grandmother’s memories of living in a shophouse!

What I really admire about the Library House is the attention to detail! The wooden beams on the ceiling used to match the timber panels to the retention of the Peranakan details retain this shophouse’s rich history while contrasted with modern touches, such as the monochromatic grey wall and granite floor! I love how these tastefully co-exist with the warmness of the timber staircase, for eg, while also giving an interesting layer of texture. I think these subtle touches are what really bring out the Library House's eclectic style, yet maintaining its historical integrity...kind of like a mirror to its external surroundings in how the shophouses interact with our modern cityscape! It'll be really surreal to get to experience this unique house in person!

Thank you for sharing and uncovering the history of Emerald Hill, which I frequently visit but never knew about. With the context to the rich history and heritage of the neighbourhood, I can better appreciate the architecture nuances highlighted in the video, such as the 5 foot yard walkway that Raffles wanted. I have also never been into a residential shophouse before, and always had the impression that since shophouses are old, the interior must be old but I was pleasantly surprised it retains the history and heritage with modern interior furnishings and a huge floor area which is preferred in recent times as we stay or work from home more often. Overall , I learnt alot from this video and thank you for sharing. Please continue to do more so such videos !

Liked and subscribed! I enjoyed so many things which I saw that I had to re-watch the video just to select one thing about it. What hit me the most was that I could immediately imagine my partner and I lounging around the space. It’s the down to earth vibes and cosiness inside that made me picture us at each spot, despite the exterior shouting “luxurious and unreachable” library house on Orchard Road. It’s like my heart rate goes up (and up) before entering the shophouse front door, but calms down upon transitioning into the homely interior - what strange feelings. That was my authentic feelings. ;)

Thank you, Reuben, for the educational and well-presented video! I see it as a really positive sign that there are increasingly more videos like yours shedding light on these shophouses which are an important part of Singaporean architecture. I also love how innovative businesses like Figment are serving as attractive use-cases for such shophouses and in turn preserving them in great condition! 😊 I really enjoyed browsing through the Figment website. Each unit looks so quaint and cosy! What I enjoyed most about the Library House has to be the thoughtful design details all over the house, where modern design choices were employed while paying homage to the heritage of the building. While perhaps not the most recognisable detail, I appreciated the tasteful design choice to cover the ventilation portal with transparent cutaway glass. Doing so allows the guests to appreciate its original necessary function of allowing air flow and in turn ensuring that the house does not get too stuffy in tropical Singapore. I also loved the thought and effort the Figment design team put into installing the bonsai plant (amazing to know that it was crane-lifted) into the atrium within the shophouse - It reminds me of the internal gardens in Kyo-Machiyas (Traditional Wooden Townhouses in Kyoto, Japan). I’m sure the guests appreciate the serene and relaxing environment it provides! As a Singaporean relocating overseas for work in a few months’ time, it would be really meaningful for me and my partner to have the chance to immerse ourselves for 3D2N in this slice of local heritage. I can only imagine how wonderful an experience it would be for Figment's residents when they WFH within the shophouse, either within their cosy room or surrounded by the tasteful design in the communal area. P.S. I am also a big fan of Haruki Murakami. My favourite books of his are “Norwegian Wood” and “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running”. So, it was such a pleasant surprise to find out that the studio for this giveaway is the Murakami Studio! 📖

Growing up with my parents at a tender in a shophouse, I could never forget peeking through the little windows towards the main street and people watching all day with them. The library house is such a modern and upscaled version of the traditional shophouse. It would be such a lovely one which my parents could can a chance to experience with their childhood memories.
