Hi Dave, Well, my first scope was the 4SE. I loved it for the time I had with it but when I retired in 2016, I bought the big brother, the 11" EdgeHD with the CGEM mount. Cutting one's teeth with an f/10 scope is not how it should be done. If I had to do it all over, I would have chosen a focus ratio of around f/5. That size is so much easier to find targets and to guide. Clear Skies

Interestingly, last night I was looking in Nina to find Jupiter, but didn’t know where to look, then today you mentioned Orbitals! Problem solved😀 Very interesting to see SharpCap stacking like that, not done any of that before but it’s all on my to do list😀 Thanks Pat & Clear skies 👍

Thank you, Simon, for watching my video. I've been using SharpCap for about 6 years now and never experimented with the "Live Stacking". WOW, what a game changer. I think you can plate solve in SharpCap too. I am going to look into that right away, however, I don't think it will replace NINA. Finding the planets (and comets) is so easy in NINA (once you know where to look). The scope is 7 years old but last summer, I took special interest in being sure it was properly collimated. If out collimation, you can never focus the planets. Clear skies to you, Simon.

Very nice. I just last week photographed Jupiter with my Celestron short tube 80 (f/5) and Saturn with my Celestron XLT 102 (f/9.2) using Sharp Cap. First time I ever took a photograph of a planet. Would need a flatbed to drag your mount into my back garden and a crane to heft your optical tube onto the mount. Heavy, but powerful.

Ha ha, yes, it is a beast. That's why after I set it up and polar align it, I don't move it. I have a 365 cover for it. I place a large beach towel over the scope then use the cover. I've been doing this for years now. I do bring in the camera and mini computer if I am not able to use the rig for a couple of nights. I am betting you had much better results with the f/9.2 scope.

Thank you Pat. I always learn so much from you. I joined your Team. At the start, was your scope roughly polar align? Did you do a three star alignment? I don't understand NINA yet. I just discovered planetary live stacking within SharpCap last night on KZbin. Very powerful. It captures videos, replaces AS!4 for stacking and replaces RS6 for wavelet sharpening. Wow. What brand filter wheel wheel do you use? I noted you don't use an ADC.
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
Hi Craig, Yes, this "Live Stacking" in Sharpcap is the nail in the coffin for Autostackkert and Registax6. The rig is nearly perfectly polar aligned. In NINA, I don't need to do a 3 star alignment. All I need is to have the scope pointing toward Polaris. It will slew to the target then PLATE SOLVE to center it. That is one of the great features in NINA ... plate solving. (I understand that Sharpcap can plate solve too, and I need to experiment on theirs.) I have been testing an Off Axis Guider for the Celestron rig and am impressed at its guiding. It is doing better than the SSAG. I did not use the ADC. I find that it doesn't aid me much once the planet is above 45 degrees. The filter wheel is the generic ZWO, 5 slot 2" model that I use for the color camera. I have the 7 slot wheel for my monochrome camera. Thanks for watching my video, Craig. Clear Skies

@ What camera is NINA using to plate solve? I’m guessing the one in off axis guider. BTW my SSAG never really worked either
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
@@craiglowery4427 ... I use the main camera, which gives the most stars. The off-axis guider is just a piece of the image circle. I heard of some who use the guide scope/camera to plate solve, but that needs a good guide scope. THANK YOU for joining my channel, Craig.

Always love your videos Pat. Can I ask: what is your backfocus? How do you do your collimnation? I'm having challenges with my C11 SCT rig. Mine is NOT an HD, but an older XTL version. Thanks, Doug
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
Hi Doug, I have the camera sensor about 139mm (5.5") from the back of the scope. From there, I can easily focus from there with some room to spare. When I put the 0.7x reducer on it, the back focus goes all the way back to 163mm. (And I thought they were supposed to be both the same.) For collimation, I point the scope nearly straight up on a bright star and place it quite a bit out of focus. To make life easier, I replaced the 3 fine tuning screws with "Bob's Knobs". From there, I adjust the 3 'knobs' until the out of focus star(s) make as perfect of a doughnut as possible. To check it, I reverse the focus to the other side and make sure the star(s) make those perfect doughnuts. I hope this helps. Clear Skies, Doug

Again very similar ideas. I recently switched to the 1400hd. The autoguider from celestron never came with the Ascom driver. Was also considering going off axis for guidance. Been toying with the Nina sharpcap thing also. What are you using for alignment now. Is the Nina autofocus doing the job. Sharp cap also has an auto focus but would have shut down with Nina and turn on with sharpcap also
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching my video. Is it the StarSense AutoGuider from Celestron? If so, the driver is within CPWI. But you are correct, you cannot connect it via ASCOM into PHD2, which is rather annoying. I started to experiment with the OAG and so far am rather pleased. I learned that the OAG does better with a guide camera with large pixels. During this video, the moon was full, and good guiding is next to impossible. I was getting about 1.25 arcsecond RMS error. On nights with no moon, the RMS error was down to around 0.6 to 0.8 arcseconds. With NINA, all I have to do is have the rig initial position set to true north (and good Polar Alignment). From there, NINA does a great job in plate solving and always centers the target. Also, I love NINA's auto-focus routine. Once I get the right settings figured out, the autofocus works like a champ, as long as I am not trying to focus with a full moon nearby. Clear Skies

@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy So at this point we would be better off going back to the device hub manager. Cpwi would not have to run in the background with only Nina and sharp cap the system would run easier. Cpwi is large. Also I still have my 1100hd. I noticed you have a similar problem with the aluminum dew shield moving “hence the straps”. I have come up with a solution and it also incorporates an automatic flat panel that also serves as a cover for Celestron hd scopes. I have it currently for the 1400 and the 1100hd. If this interests you I will forward the photos or videos to you so you can see the setup. The aluminum dew shield stays solid and maintains its round shape on the end. Again I appreciate the communication with you. Always seem to be on the same page

@@DrNormile ... I don't know of a way to control the Celestron-type mounts other than using CPWI. I certainly would like another way, such as EQMOD. Yes, I tried and tried to get the dew shield to clamp on, but it won't, so I just used 3 large rubber bands to secure it. However, gravity always wins, pulling it down a bit. I'd be interested in your solution(s). My email address is patofsavannah@gmail.com

Pat, I enjoyed this video. A few questions. I've used NINA for a year and never saw that you could center planets with "orbitals." Is that a plug in or included in NINA? Secondly, I shoot planets with a C6 SCT and a barlow lens. Will NINA plate Solve with the 2x or 3x barlow in place? Or do I have to center the planet without it, then insert it? Thanks!
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
Hi Greg, The "Orbitals" plugin is easy to install. Just go to the plugin tab, find "Orbitals," and install it. That's it. Good question about plate solving. I've tried this and found it is nearly impossible to plate solve with the Barlow or extender in use. So, if I plan to use the Barlow/Extender, I would plate solve first, then add the Barlow. Of course, you will need to refocus. Also, in plate solving, it will do a much better job if you are in good focus.

(The deep sky cameras cost from around $1,200 to $2,200.) The guide camera was the ZWO ASI 174 mini which is around $350. The off axis guider is around $350. The minicomputer attached to the rig is around $400. The auto focuser is around $250. The Power box / USB hub with dew heater ring, and dew shield is around $650. This is certainly not a cheap hobby. Dear Pat, thanks for all the videos and hard work on astrophotography you do for us, but using deep sky filters for astrophotography of planets is not quite right. OIII or H-alpha refer to ionized oxygen and excited neutral atomic hydrogen, but as in the Earth's atmosphere, the atmospheres of the planets are cold, neutral, and eventually molecular. Hydrogen, like oxygen, is not present in atomic form in the visible gas layers of the planets. They are part of complex molecules such as ammonia, methane, water, etc. The deep-sky filters therefore do their job by cutting out a certain fraction of the reflected Sun light, but they cannot improve the image quality of the planets. Personally, I would like to encourage you to explore the near infrared portion of the CMOS sensitivity range and avoid using a UV/IR filter, as the scintillation of the Earth's atmosphere is significantly lower at NIR wavelengths, resulting in less disturbed images. The Jovian planets have significant amounts of methane at 889 nm, which is typically blocked by UV/IR cutoff filters that end around 700 nm. Kind regards Juergen
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy
@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, Juergen, for the heads up concerning the filters. I agree. As a matter of fact, I just received an IR pass (685nm) filter and plan to experiment with that on the next clear night. In my defense, I was shooting the planets next the the full moon and was trying to filter some of the bright light, and since I had the filter wheel already loaded with the other filters, I thought it would be interesting to see the effects from the different filters. Thank you for watching my video. Clear Skies.
