Great video! 4WD SCT is one of my favorite classes to run. Down in south Florida all the tracks have a dedicated class for them. I do wish we had more tracks that ran 2wd stadium truck.

The manufs were not really putting out conversions for buggies in the 80s. It was outfits like JG who would sell you a kit for ~25-35$ to make your RC10/JRX2/Ultima a truck. They came in and wiped floor with Blackfoots/Beetles/Big Bears/Brutes etc. then the JRXT came along and put the conversions in their place. This exact evolution occured in 1/8 nitro in the mid 2000s when folks were racing nitro monsters, then 'truggy' conversions came out, then the Jammin (followed by others) came out and took over to stay. Only thing that has really changed is that in the late 80s/early 90s people laughed at Traxxas now they are just the biggest company in the world and by a wide margin. -U10

My heart will always bleed stadium truck, was never a scaler, so never even looked at Core or short course trucks. To me the stadium truck was like an outlaw buggy class, wider suspension, longer wheelbase , bigger tires, everything bigger and somewhat better in stability also more potential for faster times (in my experience). I've had buggies, but never could tame their twitchy handling, where stadium trucks had the stability where it was needed. I never raced indoors on a prepped track, always on loamy true dirt tracks, so maybe that was the problem. But i always ran modified classes (hated stock) so the stadium truck always worked better for my driving style. Sorry i never liked short course trucks, too scale and too limited in performance for me

4WD SCT is actually quite popular here at my home track in Texas. Weekly club races typically have roughly half a dozen 4WD short courses, and they're pretty competitive. They occasionally bring out a few 2WDs but they're far less popular and usually get lumped in with the RWYB, Future Champs, and Spec Slashes unless someone throws down a call-out on them. Conversely, we don't run 10th Stadium Truck at all. One shows up from time to time, but everything else is 8th buggy and truggy.

I personally really like SCT cause they are kinda sorta scale looking, but they are an absolute disaster on the local track's super high bite carpet due to the body's super high CG. I also personally think ST's are the dumbest looking race oriented RC out there. But they work much better on the carpet.

As an old person getting back into the hobby, and as a motorsport fan in general, I like that there are so many RC competitions from local and regional to nationals. I'm also surprised that some classes aren't more popular, such as the SCT. When I was a youth in the 80s, pre-runner trucks and baja trucks were all the rage. So much so that most every truck manufacturer had their own version, and they were essentially SCT trucks. I mean, whether it's an Arrma Senton or a Traxxas Slash, or Losi, or Associated... they're ALL based on the legendary Toyota Hilux SR5 race truck of the 80s and 90s. Heck, even Back to the Future's Marty McFly had one. I don't know why they're not more popular. They are a blast to drive. And all these things called buggy's are not. If it doesn't have a Beetle body or tube chassis, fat rear tires and pizza cutter front tires with a big stinger exhaust pipe sticking out of the back, it's not a buggy. For example, the Injora Tarantula is a bonafide buggy.

A couple aspects of SCT that I like, the longer wheelbase kinda gives you a bit more time to react when the rear end breaks loose, so more power sliding and drifting, and sometimes a bit less looping out. The SCT bodies definitely give lots of area for paint, more to see, and look great with scale race liveries... mine is done up with City Chevrolet stickers... I still love my 2wd mod trucks though, and will always try to have a stadium truck at the ready , as well as an SCT... I also like being able to run my 2wd nitro trucks , which has opened a can of worms as far as Nitro goes...

From my experience: Stadium trucks have exceptional traction compared to other 2WD 1/10th classes due to their large contact patch, are generally easier to drive than either buggies or short course trucks, and tend to be "set and forget" on most surfaces making them a great entry point into racing (or, well, they would be if more tracks ran them, but apparently there's a lot of buggy guys who seem to wish that the class just never existed to begin with). My first hobby grade RC car was a Duratrax Evader ST, and now that I finally got my Storm ST ready I'm looking forward to running it at All Out RC at least as a practice car (and maybe we can get a class for them going there). 2WD SCTs... well, I'll probably get a lot of crap for saying this, but in terms of performance they're generally going to be the weakest of the 1/10th scale 2WD classes (though not by a huge amount, it's close enough that a well tuned 2WD SCT in the hands of a skilled driver can keep up with STs and sometimes buggies). They're heavy, their big bodies cause a significant parachute effect, and they just seem to kinda float around the track rather than being able to actually corner. That being said, their longer wheelbases make them more stable in corners than either buggies or stadium trucks and that combined with their floatiness can also make them relatively easy to drive. Coupled with the closed-wheel body design of the class and 2WD SCTs make a good entry and casual class for people who just want to have fun. 2WD Buggies (for completion's sake)... I kinda don't like these. I KNOW I'm going to get a TON of flak from most of the racing community, but these things are a pain to drive, a pain to set up, and in general can be very frustrating. And honestly, I kinda blame this class and it's ubiquity as THE racing class for having a part in how RC racing's popularity hasn't really been able to grow that much. A lot of tracks run these almost exclusively, and it's a very difficult and discouraging class for people getting into the sport. That being said, these do tend to post the fastest lap times of the 2WD classes. "Mini" Truggies... First off, I hate the name for this class, there's nothing "mini" about a 1/10th scale truck but the name stuck. Anyway, 1/10th scale truggies have all the advantages of a stadium truck combined with 4WD. The result is a vehicle that doesn't even give a shit about setup as long as it's in the rough ballpark, can put TONS of power to the ground and run hotter setups than even 4WD buggies, and is just generally going to be an absolute blast to drive. They're one of only two 1/10th scale classes that you commonly see alongside the big 1/8th scale classes, the other being 4WD SCT. Also, because setup doesn't matter too much as long as it's in the ballpark, this class is also the easiest to build a competitive car for - people have had success running everything from the top-end Tekno and XRAY kits to the budget racer HoBao Hyper TT10e, to even Rustler 4x4s and Stampede 4x4 truggy conversions and possibly even the Himoto Katana (although the Katana's tendency to spit out dogbones would probably hold it back). Seriously, why aren't 1/10th scale truggies more popular? 4WD SCTs are, for all intents and purposes, 1/8th scale buggies wearing SCT bodies, running SCT wheels and tires, and powered by 2S power systems rather than the normal 4S systems seen in E-Buggies. On the ground, they handle about how you'd expect a vehicle described like that to handle, but in the air the huge bodies cause a nasty parachuting effect. They're fun, and the 4WD setup definitely makes these things more nimble and less floaty than their 2WD counterparts. 4WD Buggies, or "Wheelers" as some people call them, are THE most precise and capable 1/10th scale off-road class out there. They can be VERY aggressive and a lot of setting them up is simply taming their super-aggressive handling, but other than that being 4WD gives them a huge advantage in terms of drivability compared to 2WD buggies. These things tend to turn the FASTEST lap times around tracks as well, and can carve corners like nothing else except maybe some 1/8th scale 4WD buggies. That being said, while they're easier to drive than 2WD buggies once dialed in, that doesn't mean they're outright easier to drive. They demand precision. That being said, this is one of a small handful of classes that will make you a better driver if you run it, alongside 1/12th scale pan cars, 1/8th scale buggies (particularly the nitro ones since those force you to maintain corner speed) and 1/8th scale On Road GP.

Great run down on the two classes. I think to run Short Course, part of it is liking how they look when driving them. Sort of scale with all the leaning and wallowing. I don't know if that applies to racing them. I bought cheap all metal shocks for my 4x4 Slash a while back. I put them on after popping a cap on the original plastic ones. Problem is, it now handles, and I'm not sure I want it to do that. I may go back to the original shocks. (I don't race btw).
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 8 ай бұрын
For the most part, the racing-focused SCTs don't behave like the Slash does. The Slash was specifically built with an elevated center of gravity and progressive rate shocks to make it prone to body roll like a full-size SCT. While they add to the realistic appearance, these design elements hurt the handling of the truck. Modern racing-focused SCTs typically run an aluminum chassis set very close to the ground and conventionally sprung shocks. The bodies are also typically vented to prevent the parachute effect that a big body shell would normally cause.

SCTs are more interesting to watch and look at, the Slash was my first hobby grade RC so I’m heavily biased towards them. But it’s near impossible to deny that Stadium Trucks are the better competitive class. I prefer Stadium Trucks over buggies because the body gives you more space to express yourself even if it’s not a full canvas like the Slash. My Mini T 2.0 has three bodies and I plan to get more as I get more color scheme ideas.

The 2WD Slash actually gets a spec class at some tracks. At tracks that don't offer one you _can_ make a Slash somewhat competitive with a LOT of effort and some significant upgrades, but at that point you'd be better off putting the money into a Serpent SRX2-SC RTR or an Associated Pro2 SC10 (it'd still be cheaper than a full race kit, though). If you've got an LCG Slash 4x4, though, you're actually in luck. They're not the best truck for the 4WD SCT class but you can turn them into proper race cars relatively easily compared to some of the other Traxxas models.

I converted my JRX pro to an LXT and I was happy with it. Trying to steer those old buggy's with their thin front tires was impossible. You would just push forward while the front tires skipped. You had to let off of the throttle to turn. With the truck, you just powered through and with the fat tires on the front you had the traction to hold your line.

Biased but ever since the Slash days that got my into this space, for me the 2WD SCT class is pure fun to compete in from backyard to club tracks and beyond…although mini truggy could be in my future…appreciate the keen insights, Roach! P.S. try to cut vent holes in your SCT to make it more aerodynamic

Love the way real one's lift the inside wheel way off the ground under cornering. Can you get a rc one to do that ? I imagine it would be great fun

I've never actually seen an RC SCT lift a wheel completely off the ground like a full-size SCT, but the Traxxas Slash, Slayer and Slash 4x4 in particular were designed to have a lot of body roll. That being said these are generally NOT very competitive racing vehicles - you can make a Slash 4x4 competitive with some work and the 2WD slash gets its own class, but the Slayer was hopeless as a race car.

If they'd be allowed on stadium truck class, build one... here a lot of outdoor club racing allows them, as stadium truck is open/mod ... I've got a GT2 , and 3 T6.2 based trucks that see the dirt often enough...

Great Video. I would conditionally disagree with your assessment of SCT being less competitive and slower. Outdoors a well set up SCT is very competitive and often faster and handles better than 2wd buggies. (Track surface dependent) Indoors you are correct the buggies are faster and handle the higher traction better. Hands down the SCT is more fun to race. Too many buggy snobs in the buggy classes. As far as jumping an SCT. I try to fly slightly nose down and use the body to push the truck down. The easiest way to do that is never be under power off the lip of a jump, set the right amount of drag brake and the truck will fly low and fast. If the nose is too low, throttle is up. Keep up the good work.
