I'd add MetLife to the list. Between the cold weather, the issues with the stadium's turf, and the logistical disaster that surrounded their lone Super Bowl hosting gig, I don't think the NFL wants to have their biggest stage be in Jersey again.

Yes, pretty much agree with the list. The driving factor is that the NFL is getting into the vacation/travel business. They want to sell vacation packages that include going to the big game. Nobody wants to go to Detroit for vacation, that's why the Super Bowl is always in Florida, Arizona or New Orleans - and now L.A. too. And that's why the NFL has so many European games, so they can sell vacation packages. I'm sure the NCAA is doing this too in relation to the playoffs and championship games.

It is sad seeing the Rose Bowl and Sun Devil stadium on the list. I’m not sure if ASU owns sun devil stadium or not, but there’s just not enough money in UCLA or ASU football for those stadiums to get the lovely upgrades and modernization. One thing I love about college football is the stadiums are all 100+ years old and the schools do a great job freshening them up, adding the suites and luxury boxes, expanding concourses, etc. while usually maintaining the history of the place. They’ll definitely have a CFP Final at the Rose Bowl someday. Not saying soon. But it has so much cachet to it, and what matters is TV. SoFi is great, but the notoriety of the 150th Rose Bowl game, for example, is enough for it to make sense, financially, for it to host. Plus, it’s already hosting semifinal games regularly.

Another reason why the Rose Bowl is being supplanted by So Fi is that the former is located in the middle of an affluent Pasadena residential neighborhood where the streets are wholly inadequate to handle game traffic, nor is there enough parking (the local golf course and any available lawn space is used). Also, the closest public transit is at least a hilly three mile walk crossing a freeway. Access in and out of the Rose Bowl for any event of more than 20,000 is pure torture.
@ec1628
@ec1628 8 ай бұрын
The east side of the stadium is entirely dedicated to public transit. The busses take you directly to downtown Pasadena and the Gold Line. The golf course is unique and fun to tail gate on. But I do have to agree with you on exiting . It can be extremely difficult to exit the stadium.

There will never be another Super Bowl hosted at a venue that is not a home stadium of an NFL franchise, unless, perhaps, they ever decide to host one in London. They had one at Stanford Stadium back in the 80s too (Super Bowl XIX), when the 49ers played at Candlestick Park. With the public and private money that has been put into building NFL stadiums, there would never be a justification.
@ec1628
@ec1628 8 ай бұрын
@@johncassani6780Also up until the 90’s, the difference between college and nfl stadiums were negligible. Many of the dual purpose or older nfl stadiums were horrible. After the mid ‘90’s, the nfl stadiums far exceeded any dual purpose or college venue.
@johncassani6780
@johncassani6780 8 ай бұрын
@@ec1628 Yes. That is true. They were built on a budget, to maximize the number of fans who could get through the gates. The alternatives in the LA and SF markets were the LA Coliseum, which was large, but by no means luxurious, and Candlestick was smaller than Palo Alto, and certainly had no reputation for luxury. The worst stadium built in this era was, arguably, Schaeffer Stadium in Foxborough, which was a 60,000 seat high school field, with only a few bathrooms. But, it wasn’t multipurpose!

You do wonder if the NFL takes into account the home team and how likely it is that they will host a Super Bowl that they participate in. The NFL gives every cold weather city that builds them a new indoor/retractable roof stadium with one a super bowl as a "yea we're going to bring the super bowl if you build us a stadium," but then won't go back lol. Like he said in the video they will go back to warm weather cities over and over even with trash stadiums because people like to party. I want Detroit to have a chance at a Super Bowl not riddled with controversy so they should be awarded another one. In fact, the 30 NFL stadiums should just rotate hosting the Super Bowl. There are quite a bit of teams that have either never hosted at all or just in their current market. I'm hugely in favor of Cleveland getting a game. Cleveland Browns Stadium is the oldest NFL stadium that has never hosted postseason football above the high school level, we can thank Art Modell for that. I disagree with that first. The "Rose Bowl Game" is a whole entity that is tied to the stadium and Pasedena. If there is no Rose Bowl Stadium then there is no Rose Bowl game. There is big branding and history tied to that name which The Rose Bowl Inc. all has ownership of. They could sell the rights to the game but part of me thinks, out of pride, they would rather ill the whole thing then pawn it off to LA and SoFi. It is already in murky waters now with the implosion of the Pac-12 as now they automatic conference tie-in does not exist anymore. There will be changes but many hope the game can still live on as is. Rose Bowl Stadium is dated but it is a classic gem for football and soccer, no different than Fenway or Wrigley for baseball. Football lacks many true classic stadiums that are still close to their original form.

You hit the nail on the head. I'm of the opinion that the NFL should only host the SB in 3 cities - Miami, New Orleans, and now, Las Vegas. Why? Because the game is more of a party and corporate event than a game. Who wants to party in the snow or in a loacation (LA) that is so spread out. I'd throw NY into the above 3, but there are lots of issues there. I agree that Tampa would be a runner up.

Don't be too surprised if Detroit does host another Super Bowl. Do you know what industry Detroit is known for? That's right, the auto industry. Do you know what one of the NFL leading advertisers is? The auto industry.

I seriously doubt even auto industry execs want the super bowl in Detroit. They want to use their corporate cards to go somewhere warm where they can drink outside.

I do think US Bank Stadium will host another Super Bowl, and so will Lucas Oil Stadium.

I know they're antiquated and the sightlines aren't that great compared to modern stadiums, but there's something about those classic old bowl stadiums like the Rose Bowl that scream college football. 🏈🏟
