I get those oil change reminders from Kia too. Hilarious. Also, let’s not forget the damning evidence that EVs also cause more pollution from the premature wearing of tires. Thank you for your rebuttal video on that, btw. Hearing my laughing at it caused the family Shouty Bob to jeter over to his cobalt schtick. Sigh. It’s exhausting honestly.

My E Niro has 42K miles and still at 100% SOH. I do check it from time to time just to see if it still has at least 64Kwh of useable energy and so far, yep it does! Very much enjoy this car :)

Thanks for this interesting long term review, lots of detail which is much appreciated. Looks like we have the same vintage, as you they are branded e-Niro in Europe. We got ours in March 2019, first batch to come into France. We are retired and the e-Niro is our only car. We’ve done 64,000 km and our average efficiency over the year is 14.5 kWh/100 km...but we never tow anything.. We have done trips from our home in south west France to UK (twice), Switzerland and Frankfurt...a 2,200 km round trip in mid-winter that was a bit of a charging challenge! I see you’ve had the same 12v battery problems as us...the factory fit is basically crap..am replacing mine this very day with a Bosch 52 Ah if Amazon make the delivery as promised. The only fault we’ve had was the passenger wing mirror failed to fold back on locking..the adjustment worked OK so it was a minor inconvenience...replaced under warranty. The car seems well built and suggests it will last many years and reach a high mileage without problems. We’ll see!

So hopefully Nikki and Kate don't take this the wrong way. I've always felt Kate's videos were great information. I just felt that Kate wasn't into it. Recently however, Kate seems to have found some passion in her commentary. Could it be from driving the Taycan. Hmm. Wherever you found it, hold on to it.

82k km on my E-Niro. Recent trip of 430km still doable, mostly high-way in trafic on averge 80km/h. Sadly EU version has no towing option, but very efficient and usable car. (17.2 kwh/100km average overall)

I think the reason Kia doesn't let you activate the seat heaters via the app is because they are using basic, mechanical switched seat heaters that do not interface with the car's computer.

@Hans-gb4mv

wasn't that build on a different platform? I know Hyundai/Kia has had 2 platforms on which they build their hybrid/BEV cars. If I'm not mistaken the Soul is built on the same platform as the Hyundai Kona while the Niro is built on a different platform. They do probably share a lot of the drive train.
@dacoz
@dacoz 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hans-gb4mvunless I'm mistaken, between 2019 and 2022, the Kona, Soul, and Niro are all the same platform. The 2023 Niro looks like it is borrowing the EV6 platform but modified and with slightly less performance. No word yet on the 2023 Soul or Kona. And prior to 2019 the Soul and Niro used a different (but afaik same as each other) platform.
@Hans-gb4mv
@Hans-gb4mv 2 жыл бұрын
@@dacoz So, I had to go and look it up. The original Niro was built on an adaptation of the J platform, just as the original Ioniq. The original Soul was built on the J5 platform, another variant of the same. The Kona on the other hand is built on the B-SUV platform, one of the variants of the Small Automobile platform. The new Niro EV in the UK is a big disappointment. Just seems a little tacky with all that hideous paint black exterior trim and the inside design is just not that clever. We wanted to like it so we could justify trading in our present E Niro, but that is highly unlikely ! Smart #1 has now moved to the top of the list and we are quite happy to keep our present E Niro until next year.

I recently purchased this car in the premium model, I am getting 4.6 MPKH, but I drive like an old lady on purpose to achieve that level. One thing I really hate about it is that when the sun is overhead, it reflects on the chrome at the lower portion of the dash and blinds me while driving, have to hold my hand up to block it. It also needs to be driven with 2 hands to properly maximize the paddle shifters for regen, so its not a good choice for a one-armed person :)

I’d advise new Kia/Hyundai owners to go the PPF (Paint Protection Film) route with maybe Ceramic coating after as the PPF will add chip and minor dent resistance.

Interesting, my dealership advised against wasting my money on the paint protection package since I was parking in a garage.
@seabream
@seabream 2 жыл бұрын
@@lorrainehinchliffe5371 I mean, that'll help for some things, but it also matters what kind of driving conditions you'll be subjecting your car to. I guess that being indoors will help reduce paint deterioration from UV exposure, bird droppings, and (if you're coastal) salt exposure, but if you're driving a lot on roads with dust and other debris, road salt/sand, and insects, your paint is still probably going to last longer with at least a frontal PPF. Whether it is enough of a difference to matter to you is a personal choice of course. Then of course there's the other stuff. I only got frontal PPF and a bit around the door edges and then got a scrape down the side, possibly from someone's handbag in a parking lot. Getting PPF on the whole width of the doors would have cost less than getting such a long scratch properly fixed, so I'm kind of regretting not getting it now. I intend to keep my car for at least eight years, maybe more, so for me, it would probably have been worth it to put on PPF at least once when I first got it. Would it would have been worth redoing it when it came time, probably, but not necessarily. At any rate, the PPF I have has been holding up well, so I'm happy with that.

We don't pay any data connectivity fee in the UK. Also there's a dash setting for the 12v battery to be topped up by the drive battery.
@transportevolved

Yup, have that set - it's a pretty common problem with the Niro - and in fact it continued through onto the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the EV6. In those Kia released a firmware update which allows it to top up the battery more frequently which seems to have solved it. ^Kate

I also have Kia Niro EV 2019 (bought in 2020)... so in the two years of driving, I have 20k miles on it... Two major issues is (1) the wheel-of-fortune sound at low speeds (recently had the motor mount replaced, seems fixed so far... and (2) low 12-volt battery causing weird system error occasionally when cold temps... But other than those, great EV... great range... wish charging speed was faster.... driver seats too firm on my back, prefer soft Nissan LEAF seats.

8:41 Not allowing preheating to turn on the seat heaters remotely at all seems a strange choice. Like, it's not hard to let the driver decide whether or not they prefer more energy for the drive vs. the heating for themselves. As you may know, that's what Nissan did. In my LEAF, the seat heater(s) go(es) on when you pre-heat if the switch(s) is/are in that position, and not if it/they is/are n't. Granted, you don't get a choice about the heated steering wheel, that just turns on regardless, but that also draws less energy. And that's the way it works for both my old one with the 24 kWh battery, and my current 40 kWh model, both of which have less energy to play with than the Niro EV.

The BMW outage was odd - for me it wasn't "completely out," it was just _"extraordinarily slow to run the commands",_ and you had to leave the phone app actively running, making sure your phone didn't go to sleep, and not switching apps. Running the commands would take 5-10 minutes, and fail about 1/3 of the time (if you left the app active the whole time, if you left the app or let the phone screen sleep, it would fail 100% of the time.)

That can happen when the battery cells need rebalancing as this is typically done at or close to 100%. One that's done, if you used some battery on a single trip, then charged to 100% again, it would probably reach 100% more quickly the second time.

Vehicle BMS reporting of state of health is notoriously unreliable - and there is no way a 3 year old battery could lose just 1%. Calendar aging would account for more than that. To measure capacity you have to charge to 100% and use at least 50% of the battery capacity and charge it back to 100% and see what the car reports the battery accepting and you can work out capacity on a pro rata basis plus a few percent for efficiency.

Well... This country is moving towards it being unsafe for me to live here. We (my wife and I) are reluctant to spend that money on a car that we may be forced to sell if we decide we're going to move somewhere not engaging in genocide against trans and queer people. And yes, that's a very privileged attitude, that we world just up and leave. But I've read my history, and I'm quite definitely preparing for that being the most sensible option. When you hear an automaker say there is no demand for a car, you need to take it with a mountain of salt. It usually means that internally, there isn't enough profit margin on the car for them to want to bring it to market. That's why sedans have been being phased out in favor of crossovers, despite the second best selling vehicle in the world is a sedan. You can't trust automakers to actually tell you the truth.

#SwitchToSolarEndWars Let's put solar panels on every home, business and covered parking rooftop and switch to electric vehicles making nearly everything we do solar powered while completely decentralizing our power supply and empowering everyone as power generation owners. Solar power is CHEAPER and electric vehicles are soon to be CHEAPER to make and already are considerably CHEAPER to maintain and operate, especially if charged from your own solar power. A 3-5 year ROI (return on investment) for a solar array that will generate power for decades is a no-brainer and the panels can even be made locally too. #EndFossilFuels #EndNukes #SwitchToSolar #SwitchToElectric #GreenNewDeal #EmpowerEveryone #DEMEXIT #StillSandersPlatform #RepublicansAreNazis
