The Huey, and rightly so, is almost universally lauded as the best helicopter to serve in Vietnam, but in my opinion, based upon more than a decade of experience, the Chinook was an equal to the Huey, totally different roles for the most part but nonetheless the Chinook, then and now, proved it versatility, enormous lifting prowess, durability from both environmental conditions and battle damage, and for me personally, an engineers dream to work upon. I spent hundreds of hours flying in them, for air testing and transit to many many varied locations, and can honestly say that I slept really well, nylon seats or the “stack” (cargo) was fine and the lack of facilities never bothered me as flights were never that long (unless we had ERTs fitted) and then a plastic bottle was always handy, and never ever try peeing of the ramp in flight, it makes the loadmasters very grumpy and wet (it wasn’t me). The only other aircraft that I liked to sleep on was the Hercules, same again, seat or stack, maybe a hammock, were very acceptable, put me on an airliner and sleep was nigh on impossible, whatever the distance. Thanks for another excellent upload, informative and interesting. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The "Huey" has been long gone, while the Chinook is still here and is actually being up-graded once again!

Different tools for different jobs. The Chinook is sticking around because it was discovered that the V-22 Osprey couldn’t perform more than a few of the same jobs that the Chinook could, which the Osprey was intended to replace in a great many roles. Oops… It turns out that Rotors still have a greater dead-lift capability than the props of the Osprey, just as a start. That and the downdraft of the Osprey is multiple times that of the Chinook (again: Rotors v. Props).
@goodbye8995
@goodbye8995 2 жыл бұрын
Just so long as the timing gears which keep the two rotors from colliding don't fail. When that happens you have a few seconds before the machine falls from the sky killing all on board. Chinook has been banned from the north sea oil sector for decades due to a string of (fatal) equipment failures resulting in it being considered too dangerous and unreliable for routine commercial use.

I know that from 1965 to 1968 the M14 remained in service in some units, and was gradually replaced in the forward combat units with the M16. But this unit shown conducting their “Search & Destroy” mission in support of Op. Silver City seems to be equipped with BOTH the M14 and M16. I wonder how common that was?
@robertking2580
@robertking2580 2 жыл бұрын
It seems to be fairly to see a mixture of M14s and M16s in videos as the war progressed the M14 progressively disappears with the M16 taking its place. In 1965 most units in Vietnam would still be using M14s though some would be issued the new XM16E1 such as the 1st Cavalry Division. It really just varies unit to unit and year to year.

Thank you to your brother Dawn, as well as all of his family for your sacrifice, my uncle was in Vietnam in 69-70. Vietnam Veterans are the finest generation of men we will ever know. I am so tired of seeing where people try to tell them they lost, because they never did. Crooked politicians and rich trying to get richer, would give back every piece of ground they would take. The Vietnam Vets never lost, they were just following orders to come home, but they never lost. The we-the-people failed them because they didn't demand the govt. have their back and let them fight a war to win. But the soldiers never lost it. Vietnam Vets are my favorite people, they did what others didn't have the courage to. They did it without complaint, they did it because it was expected of them and for each other. They deserve the utmost respect. I love them all for paying our dues. They were sent to do an impossible task, under the most extreme circumstances, for many ungrateful people, were not appreciated and shown respect, and won every battle with great restrictions, and succeeded only to be told to give the victory back, over and over. And was misrepresented as the only losers of Americans at war, and after being treated badly and disrespected, they still forgave people when they finally realized how they had done the Vietnam Veterans. Now I don't see how people can say anything about them except that they were/are the backbone of this Nation, True Patriots, and the most humble and finest men and women this nation and the world has ever produced. A big thank you to their Australian brothers that were right there with them through it all. Vietnam Veterans living or deceased are National Treasures.
