Dam good job. An underrated chic song. Shows what an incredible bass player Bernard Edwards was.

I remember where i was when i first heard this in 1981 in a furniture store in New york city Third Avenue in Bronx, New York in late November of that year! I got the album "TAKE IT OFF" a few days later. Glad you covered this you got it well! Excellent! 👋👋👋👋🎸

I got the record somewhere in that era, recorded it on tape, listened to it for days, weeks, months, with my ear almost glued to the speakers, trying as hard as I could to get the BE bass sound on an Asama Alembic imitation bass with a totally different pickup configuration and roundwounds. Never worked - oh... how much I still had to learn back then ! :)

Those old Stingrays have such a thick tone. They’re probably also some of the best pick basses out there. Wonder why Paul McCartney never really adopted them.

I for one am glad he didn't ! Every style its own iconic basses. Beatles music is for Hofners, old Gibsons, ... but I remember seeing Stingrays also being used by some American rock bands (Supertramp comes to mind)

Mind you, 30-35 yrs ago I would have none of it, roundwounds ruled ! But now I indeed saw the light.

Ok, the white and black Stingray. Perhaps some Earth Wind and Fire or Isely Brothers, this bass probably will sound more in tune
@robwhoot76864 жыл бұрын
Outstanding as usual however this white and black bass guitar you're playing on these videos doesn't have that same deep bass sound quality the first 3 bass guitars you've played with before. I"m not sure why but I like the sound quality that comes from the old chocolate brown bass, the black and red Yamaha, the red and black Fender, and sometimes the yellow and black one, in that order. They all sound more tuned to the original sound of all the songs you covered in the pass over the years.

Nevertheless, I make a point of it to use the original instrument as much as possible... I think on 90% of my playalongs I have used the correct bass. The chocolat brown '79 MM Sabre has 2 pickups, and I usually played with them both on, and that by definition gives a thicker sound. (on any bass for that matter)

If you are really serious about recreating bass sounds and re-living the 70-80s era and (re)discovering from inside out why bass has been so defining in that era music and going forward, you certainly should. Exspect to spend 3-4000 USD. I was lucky to buy this one for much less, because it has been refinished and is slightly unstable in the neck-body fixation. A hidden defect the previous owner did not mention but it was reflected in the lower price. It has a fraction of a millimeter play in the neck pocket (was probably sanded off too much during the refinsh), so neck can move a fraction against the body, regardless of how much tension is put on the screws. That's why It has a tendency to detune during playing, and that is noticeable on some of the playbacks I did with this bass. I am only noticing this in retrospect.

What flatwounds do you use? Chromes? Sounds awesome

I have no idea, to be honest, I am not into gear, brands etc. Oh, I seems I already looked it up in a previous question: Sku: DET4FLTHVY Detroit FLATWOUND Bass 4 Heavy .050 -.110-FLATWOUND But in the end It does not matter much, it's mainly the Stingray pickup config and how you pluck them... I remember these specific flats sounding a bit too metallic right after putting them on. But now, a few years later, they already sound more dead, which is exactly what I prefer.

Comment faite vous claqué aussi bien des cordes en Flatwounds en slap ? :O

Eh bien, regardez à quelle location je touche les cordes: entre le pickup et la manche. Et il ne faut surtout pas mettre trop de force.

What flatwounds strings are you using for your stingray ? Doesn't seem like daddario Chromes or Ernie Ball flats...? Labella ?
