Mama Cass Elliot's reaction is so good. She recognized a true talent being introduced to the world. This was at the Monterey Pop Festival and I lived in Monterey for a decade. Every time I drove by the Monterey County Fairgrounds I'd wonder what it must have been like back in 1967 when it was going on and wishing I had a time machine.

Add east Texas down to Houston and up to Dallas and over into Louisiana over to Baton Rouge up to Shreveport and you have a major part of blues and Cajun roots that grew into modern music. Hell start in Texas over to Florida up to Tennessee and you have 80% of American music that has spread around the world. The pain felt in the South is a big key, regardless of the race of the singer or writer.

First off... Love you and your reactions !! As a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day of Monterey. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips. "half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain" again, to be filmed. They also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records. The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!

You just validated my life! At 18, I went to S.F. because I knew what was happening there would never happen again in the history of the world. I wasn't new to the Bay Area, I went to high school near there. I was lucky enough to witness how these soon to be famous musicians grew their music. It was anti-establishment, experimental but they were on a mission to stop the war, unite America towards peace and love from the grass roots. Monterey Pop and Woodstock a couple of years later brought these S.F. groups to national attention. At that time although we knew they were great, before our technology no one else knew. Monterey was more than that. New performers from across America and England came. Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Erick Burdon and the Animals, Simon and Garfunkel and others showed up. Hearing you say this is classic art was the validation, to hear young people as yourself be as amazed as we were brings me joy and hope for our future because right now we are experiencing chaotic times. Back then, there were rays of hope such as the Beatles song "Let It Be" and Simon and Garfunkel s "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Please check out the last one.

To paraphrase a quote from Tina Turner in "Proud Mary", Janis Joplin doesn't do anything nice and easy. She does it nice and rough! Janis never did anything part way and all her songs have the same raw energy and soulful pain that she displayed here. And as others have said, that was Mama Cass sitting in the front row, a successful professional singer with the Mamas and the Papas that had her mind blown by Janis. You should check out some of her other songs like Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, and maybe even Summertime, where she brings her unique interpretation to a Cole Porter classic. So sad she joined the "27 Club" and we lost her great talent so soon.
