This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, what's more, I was listening to it for years without realising it was far more than the soundtrack to my all-time favourite TV programme - The 1980 BBC series 'Great Railway Journeys of the World - Coast to Coast with Ludovic Kennedy'. This performance is certainly the best I've heard so far.

Quick points of information: This is the original "pit orchestra" but with expanded strings. The 1944 premiere venue could only hold 13 musicians - flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano, two first violins, two seconds, two violas, two cellos, and contrabass. Also, the music they're playing isn't the complete ballet but the assembled excerpts of the concert suite. The score of the fully orchestrated suite has this note from Copland: "The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the Spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet, retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic."

There are 4 versions of Appalachian Spring: 1. Original 13-player complete ballet (1944); 2. Full orchestra suite (1945), this is the most commonly heard version; 3. Full orchestra complete ballet (1954); 4. 13-player suite (1972), which is the version heard here with augmented strings.

Incredibly nuanced performance. The whole ensemble was a joy to listen to, especially the three wind principals. Maestra de la Parra was very interesting to watch. I think female conductors bring a different perspective and expressiveness to the art of conducting. The videography is excellent. Obviously camera placement was well planned and executed. The sound engineering is stunning. Rich and well balanced yet sonically transparent. Every voice clearly heard. I've heard the arrangements for smaller ensembles as well as full orchestra and I think this is a paramount performance.

John Brown, I was wondering if you meant Imprecise when you imprecisely typed unprecise? Okay, criticize further as you must. Oh, is "very mediocre" high praise like a c+, or am I mistaking the precision of your usage? Is it just beneath excellent, which must fall below "very excellent". Right? Thought so...

I am always looking for classical music that affects my emotions, and most of those were created in youth. I grew up in Appalachia so I understand - Copeland captures the turmoil and the slow renewal of the soul. It's American, but every place that has seasons can interpret Spring. HR does a fantastic job with this piece.

...the tender 'call and response' interplay between the clarinet & the flute has just a touch of wistfulness I haven't heard in other conductor's envisionings of this piece... Every instrument, in its turn, is allowed to be heard...I would LOVE to hear This conductor lead THIS group of musicians in the original score for the Ballet -- which has many delightful transitional details that were trimmed-out to yield this suite. Members of Frankfurt Radio Symphony: By producing this magnanimous video of Copland's Appalachian Spring, you have shown the world the indomitable love for beauty and grace that is inherent in humanity. Refusing to allow even a pandemic to harm or destroy the beauty within, you found a way to make this happen (without endangering anyone - nice work!) and in so doing demonstrated yourselves to be among the finest representatives of humanity during an intensely inhuman experience. And as if that were not enough, to perform a quintessential American work with a Mexican conductor at the helm, and in the heart of Germany, it doesn't get better than that. You have brightened my corner of the world with this recording, and I will be forever grateful for my friends in Frankfurt. (p.s. I was stationed in Frankfurt in the early '70's as an ambulance driver out of 97th General Hospital). Gary Jones, Idaho, U.S.

When I was young (many years ago) I used to visit relatives in Pennsylvania. I had an uncle who had a farm near Bethlehem PA. that was so different from my home on Long Island. I stayed in the upstairs bedroom that had an old-fashioned feather bed and a handmade quilt. I remember waking up to the sounds of a rooster, something I had never heard for real before. It was a very special time I shall always remember. Now at 78 this music takes me back to that wonderful vacation on the farm. Absolutely beautiful music for a wonderful memory. Thank you hr sinfonie orchester for this entire series of Stage@7. What an extra special gift to all musicians and classical music lovers the world over. Clearly recorded for digital distribution (for free) during this extra-ordinarily challenging times, to pull it off with outstanding performances, high quality video and audio, must have been very challenging - to play far apart from each other to observe social distancing and to an empty hall without the energy of a live audience (also without the coughs and ambient noises. LOL) Keep doing it. You (the musicians) and we (classical music lovers) all need this. Congratulations for an extraordinarily well done project.

I didn't expect such a delicate and inspiring rendition from a non-US orchestra playing Aaron Copeland. Absolutely fantastic--down to the last parting notes.
