Assisting a local band with their sound system setup and mixing for an event - Video 30

We are supporting a local band called "Night Shift". They are providing their PA for an annual event called "Wags 4 Tags". Night Shift will be performing at this event along with two other bands.
We help setup the PA, move bands on/off the stage, and mix for Night Shift using their Presonus 32R with the UC Surface software.

I would have liked to see those outlet boxes off the ground it's a good thing you weren't working with GFCI's and that generator was isolated. Little cavalier to the electrical safety, I know rain can sneak up but there was warming. I've done some wet events before. Thankfully nobody got hurt. Otherwise great setup. Oh and the Honda generators are very common on film sets because of quiet operation and power consistency.

How did you like mixing with the KW181? It's my subwoofer of choice, and I absolutely love it for mixing live bands, plus it works great for some of the school dances I provide sound and lighting for.

How did you mix the electric kit? Did you come out of the left right or use the direct outs?

The electric kit had a Left and Right output on it, which was connected into the snake in their own inputs. Some kits provide direct-outs for each drum, I'm not sure if this kit provided that.

@traquena... I am not trying to be a D.H. or an A.H. I am just trying to help with the right phrasing... Soooooo, rather than a calling it a "schematic diagram," it would really be called a "mic layout," or a "mic positioning plot," many times as engineers we also simply call it a "mic plot." Generally a "schematic" is in direct reference to the layout of an electronic device, ie; an amplifier, an effects unit and the signal or electronic path as used by resistors, capacitors, toroidal and transformer positioning w/in that path. Of course there are certainly many other parts that make up the "schematic" of a device, those are just a few. **AGAIN, I AM NOT TRYING TO BE AN ASS, JUST TRYING TO BE HELPFUL!!** 😁 ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON FUTURE ENGINEER!!!!! Just give me the amount of "players" on stage, what they play, ie; /drummer, no. of pcs. / gtr player(s,) no. of amps/player, /Bs. gtr player, generally I like to use a D. I. And a mic /kybrd player, same as bass, I use D.I.'s and mics, /percussionist (if you have one and what they use,/ Then all the vocalists. Of course anything else you need to be in the P.A. @ F.O.H.(Front Of House- what the audience hears) & MON. WRLD- "Monitor World" (what the band hears) either in wedges (speakers)and or I.E.M.'s (In The Ear Monitors). It really is pretty straightforward, a bit confusing at first, but it definitely is not anything you can't handle!! 🤘🏼

They decided not to. Wireless is great if you move around a lot on stage. The size of the stage for this show didn't allow much room to move around.

@@stageleftaudio - Band -#1 had a vocal stomp box between his mic and snake. Band -#2 Singer is stationary and used a Beta SM58A Band -#3 Wireless Sennheiser EW 300 G3 mic

The limit of speakers that can be connected (powered speakers) is based on the electrical current available to the speakers and how loud the system will be run. You may be able to connect only 3 speakers (of a certain type), or maybe 8 (of a different type).

You are correct. I was talking about the line array speakers. In addition to electrical limits, most speaker manufactures will indicate how many line array speakers can safely be attached (or hung) together.

Were the tops effective at that height for covering the whole audience zone? Were there any considerations for pairing the DZR with the QSC subs? I recently paired a DZR10 with a 181 and tops needed both polarity inversion plus several ms delay to couple with the QSC using a 100Hz crossover

Good questions. Yes. The tops were great at their height. This was something the band and I briefly talked about before deploying the top cabinets. What's hard to see in the video is the audience area is actually "down hill" (slightly) from the stage; the speaker height coverage did very well covering the entire area. If the stage and audience area were on the same level surface, the band would have raised the top speakers to get the horns higher over the listening area. There were no specific considerations for pairing the DZR with the subs... other than the great sound quality of the DZR cabinets. The band owns the entire PA, so they may have had additional reasons for the pairing. The crossover for the pairing was managed by the DZR cabinets (around 120hz??). There was no delay nor polarity changes. If you are having to switch polarity on FOH cabinets, there may be something else going on (or possibly not setup correctly) with the cabinets or something else upstream of the cabinets. What were you experiencing with the DZR cabinets that led to a reverse in polarity?

@@stageleftaudio ah. Yeah, when I paired the DZRs with the QSC 181s, the low end just wasn't sounding full. I measured the subs and mains in Smaart and in the crossover region they were consistently around 200 degrees out of phase. I believe I polarity reversed (either the 181s or the DZRs) to get them within 30 degrees, then added delay to the DZRs to get them right on top. After that, we had 6dB of summation.

Thank you for the follow up. Great information! That's an interesting issue you encountered with that pairing. Looks like you worked it out! There can be low frequency issues (similar to what you referenced) due to 1/4 wave cancellations from walls and floors, but this is mostly an issue with indoor setups (rarely outdoor). These issues can usually be corrected (or managed) just by moving the cabinets forward or backwards. The bass at this event was solid (though, the recorder didn't pick it up to its fullest).

@@stageleftaudio - The Yamaha DZR315 tops were crossed over at 120hz. Full range being sent to the QSC KW18s, which I believe have a fixed crossover at 100hz. The Yamaha's crossover setting at 120hz cleaned up a little of the mud in the bottom.

Nothing more unprofessional on the face of the earth than a lead singer who can't memorize the lyrics and has to have an iPAD stuck in front of him. Totally podunk.

Actually, this is a very common practice at concerts (large and small). Nearly all professional singers have their OWN lyrics on a TV screen that sits on the front of the stage behind a "blind". The screen that holds the lyrics is called a tele-prompter. This tele-prompter looks like a monitor speaker, but is displaying a TV screen to the performer. There's a stage-hand that scrolls the performers lyrics through the tele-prompter as the performer is singing them (exactly like it's done for television news broadcasters). This is easily seen in a lot of professionally produced concert videos, especially video shots from the stage looking out over the crowd. There's a couple of other methods of displaying lyrics to performers, but the tele-prompter method is most common. The iPADs you see people using are their versions of the tele-prompter.
