Not only is Su a very talented singer, her voice is very addictive. I mean there are lots of women with very good voices but Su's voice is like a drug I need every day. I know I'm not alone with this feeling. I've often wondered what it is about her voice that gives that effect.

Su Metal's voice is very loud amd crystal clear. No distortion at all. Even before Babymetal her neighbors complained how loud she was in the neighborhood. Glad she use it for good. Her voice is like a straight line piercing through every heavy barriers from the band. Which is why she is perfect for Babymetal. Not to mention the entire band were built around her.

⚡ / 🔥 😱 🔥 It's great to hear this kind of in depth analysis of Su-metal's voice. That was a sixteen year old Su at the Budokan Black night concert. "Rondo" had it's world premiere the night before at the Red Night show. Her voice has only improved in the seven years since. It's easily in my top ten BABYMETAL songs. Su performed three solos that night. She did 'No Rain, No Rainbow', followed by 'Akatsuki' earlier in the set. That Black Night Budokan concert from March, 2014 is still one of my favorite BABYMETAL shows of all time. Good guess, by the way. That 'Mischief of the Metal Gods' instrumental is considered a summoning ritual. Dancing on a small platform raised ten feet in the air demonstrates courage. Following up an introduction where each Kami Band member shows off their skills with a solo, shows total fearlessness. : ) The guitarists were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura. BOH was on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums.

The Kami Band are made up of some of the best session musicians in Japan. In order it was Leda Cygnus, Takayoshi Ohmura (usually identifiable by his funny faces and pink guitar called Pink-chan, BOH is the bassist and Hideki drummer🤘 you should listen to all of Su's solos (Akatsuki, Amore and No Rain,No Rainbow) then check out her voice progression by listening to the Trilogy of Lights - Starlight,Shine and Arkadia in that order 🦊🤘🖤 She was only 16 here though. She's 23 now and her voice has only gotten stronger 😁

Yep she was only sixteen at that time. But Suzuka has not grown Babymetal into the most succesful japanese band out of Japan ever because of her voice technique, it is her skill as an actress, her hard working, her stage presence, her working attitude and her personality out of the stages what makes her so special. She is not sixteen anymore and she is still pretty good. I recommend as good modern singing stuff from them *Shanti Shanti Shanti* for some indian acid trip stuff or *BxMxC* if you are into the hip hop types.

When the band first played with the girls, Koba told them "There's no need to hold back just because they're girls or idols. Just do it as heavy and loud as you can." Su's voice still cuts through! The bass player, Boh, said it's an aspect he loves about Babymetal because other groups he plays for usually ask him to turn the sound down. They can really let loose with Babymetal

Excellent reaction and analysis again. That is two Su-metal solos you have reacted to now (and there are only 4 plus a couple of covers she did), we need to get you onto a song with all 3 girls next time so we can see what you make of the choreo as well as everything else. lol Rondo in this instance refers, I believe, to the subject matter of the song itself rather than to the music as such - Su is caught in a recurring nightmare, so in a sense looping back with a repeating theme. She is being chased through the darkness by something she can't see and eventually hides but whatever it is is still coming closer and, accepting there is no escape, she asks that if she is to die will whatever has been chasing her at least show itself. The quiet bit where she bowed her head may be pre-recorded (it probably is in some performances), but another reactor (a musician) said that in this one she is using a technique where she presses the mic against her nose and sings across rather than straight into it to get that effect. The Kami Band introduction (only played at live shows) is called 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods. In this instance it does feel like they are summoning Su from the depths. Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums, summoned to support BABYMETAL in all live shows - which is why they wear the traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint (since December 2017 the robes have been black and from the start of the 2019 tour the face paint has been replaced with masks ... nobody likes the masks). In this show they were Leda Cygnus (blue guitar), Takayoshi Ohmura (gold guitar, BOH (6 string bass) and Hideki Aoyama (drums). They are among the very best session musicians to be found in Japan. So a song with all three girls that still shows more of Su's vocals - 'Megitsune' live at Budokan, Red Night would be good for your analysis (or Budokan, Black Night is nearly as good if you can't find the Red Night version). Something more recent would have to be 'Shine' (look for the live pro-shot compilation - it has video from two shows stitched together very well, the audio is from Legend M, Moametal's 20th birthday show in 2019). For Su showing she can do very different styles (in this case Indian, almost Bollywood) 'Shanti Shanti Shanti'.

I'm absolutely agree the tales of destinies is one of the hardest and most progressive baby metal song, but if you keep practicing it kinda use to be hang on it in the always changing the time signature. You can memorize it or read the music sheet. But in this kind of time signature "the rondo" is constant but abruptly in some of part kinda like a trap. If slipping on some count it can mess all the band and the song. Easier than tales of destinies but get some trap if not use to play it. Just my two cent (Sorry English isn't my first language)

I watched another musician reaction, and said that the lofi effect was done by Su herself by putting the mic to her nose and doing a nasal resonance thing..... I mean the jury is still out whether it was artificially done or her singing ability since Su hasn't come out and said either way, but do you think it is possible? And how does that work?

So I deferred to a music producer friend on this, and the answer I got back was a pedal (that I called pre set, essentially an effect that can go on and off) that’s creating a filter and saturation. He elaborated for me too: Filter is essentially like eq - but more extreme, so you narrow the frequency range typically taking the top and bottom end off. The saturation adds harmonics and pushes it closer to distortion, so it compresses the signal, bringing up quieter parts whilst capping the louder parts. It makes it a little more uniform. The harmonics bring out the tone a little more because its essentially adding octaves or harmonies of notes well above what you produce. I think also though that the style she was singing in pushed the effect further though, for what it’s worth 😊

@@SSTVocalCoach For me the debate isn't on I'm 100% sure that this is a preset backtrack for that moment. This concert had two dates : Black Night & Red Night and if you've watched both performances you would realize that in the other concert she doesn't even pretend to lipsync that part her mouth is just closed the entire time. Maybe Koba (their producer/manager) told her to atleast pretend a little for the second concert so it would look confusing on that version to put on KZbin. There are also recordings of what her mic picks up and you do hear her sing that part but I think it's more a reflex than anything. There are indeed ways they could pull that sound off live with presets effects with a good sound engineer ready to switch it on and off at the right time but I think they're going the safe way about this and just put it on backtrack. Usually when they're using backtracks they seem to willingly show that it's a backtrack; in other words they're not trying to fool anyone but rather say : yeah this part isn't live but it sounds great and we want to deliver a great performance so here it is. Tl;dr there are ways that you could potentially deliver that part live with all sorts of presets and good preparation but in this case they chose not to and just use their backtrack and there's nothing wrong with that :).

@@Zedem0n I've always been of a similar opinion. They certainly could have done this live, but it's not the Amuse way to risk stuff like that. They would just go for the easiest and safest solution, which is 100% prerecording for that section. And if you listen to Su's in-ear monitor, she gets a count for when to start singing live again. Not absolute proof of anything, but that's how I read it. And I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's just how these huge shows are produced. Having gone back and looked at both the red night and black night concerts though, she does move her lips in both performances. Her lip synching might possibly be less convincing during red night, but I can't find any part where her mouth is closed, like you said. Could that be another show, maybe?

Yes! I actually prefer that people react to the audio/studio version versus the live version. Mainly because they get to really hear every detail and not get distracted by the cutting back and forth between the pro-shot and fancam clips that the KZbin video does. I dont think that is a voice effect being use for Su. When Su sings it, she drops her head, to help disguise the microphone position. If you pause the video, you will see she had the mike pushed against the base of her nose, and her upper lip. This muffles and distorts the sound, then when she sings with a pronounced nasal twang, emphasised by her basically squashing her nose with the mike, you get that effect. So, its mike technique and singing technique, not a post effect or recording.

She is singing that break the backing track is the piano (well cant see no piano on stage lol),she pushes the mic tight into her upper lip and nose and bends over getting a kind of off key high pitch that works in between the piano melodies giving you that music box sound. Its beautifully done.

In interviews Su-Metal said when she sang bent over, she pressed the mike against her nose to attain that haunting sound, which is why she was in that position. I think also thought that the style she was singing in pushed the effect further though, for what it’s worth 😊

Quick Repo : Delay Viewing @ cinema theater for Budokan Day-1 & 2. Surprisingly Kobe used RoR on Day-2 when Su could not return to the center stage. It was great though. Su was alone but definitely rejoicing and Moa / Momoko were dancing with a big laugh in the center. Moa's facial expression was clearly saying "Su-chan! You did it again".😄 And only in Day-2 RoR, Su shouted ""We can be standing here owing to you guys. I really appreciate you all coming today again!". She made me move to tears again.😢

Other vocal coaches I've seen reacting to this song has said that the part you said was a backing track or an effect is actually a mix of her larynx posture and mic technique.

I attribute a bit of her technique to the sound, but that’ll only take it so far. Su is a soprano with a C4 to G#5 range which means nowt to me except I know she always sounds great...but hopefully it means more to you. I've heard that Su presses the mic against her nose for that vocal change, while the result of that is also put through some sort of EQ change (again, this might mean more to you!). As for her breath control, she apparently practices the whole singing-while-keeping-up-tight-choreography thing by running on a treadmill and jumping off to sing a verse (you need to see all 3 girls perform to appreciate that singing while dancing, as she moves less in her solo numbers...especially when stood on a 3 metre high small platform!).

As for the RONDO part, I have two things to contribute: * First, the actual song (and therefore, rondo) is just the latter half of this performance. The introduction (aka Mischief of the Metal Gods) is a live-only chain of soli (solos?) to highlight the Kami Band's chops. I love that it's not just guitar solos, but every member gets his own slot, very much like a jazz combo tackles soloing. * I just listened to the most famous rondo piece of all time, Beethoven's 'Für Elise' (which has a A-B-A-C-A structure, the most basic kind of rondo), for reference, and not only did I hear some rhythmic and harmonic similarities with this song (that might just be me, though, I'm not a musicologist), listening to it also made it obvious that Rondo of Nightmare does in fact have a rondo-like structure: the 'A' part is the odd signature part (3/4? 6/8? Sometimes I hear it as 9/8) which comes up three or four times during the song (including the start and the ending), and there's different parts in between (incl. the first breakdown that ends with Su's 'aa-haaah' wail, then the 4/4 hard-rocking passage, and finally the lo-fi voice breakdown), so this is most DEFINITELY the prog-rock version of a rondo. One thing is wrong with it, though: this is just way too short. I always want more of this when the song ends so prematurely. :-(

I'm always amazed by your comments and knowledge in music. I really appreciate how you are explaining the techniques to a voice of a singer and how is structured. So, firstly I would like to thank you for all your hard work. I'm actually an ARMY and the way you analyse the boys is amazing. However, I’m not much into pop music BTS being an exception, I like more rock music to be specific. My biggest love in music are BTS and The GazettE, after classical music (I was a classical major student I used to play piano but now I do it in my leisure time). Thus, after saying all that I would really appreciate it if you reacted to The GazettE. This band is a rock visual kei band from Japan and they are in the industry since 2002, this year is their 19th anniversary. I would really like to hear your option on the vocalist Ruki and of course on the band as a whole. I think there some lives in youtube from them. I would suggest you to listen to “Nagigahara” from the GazettE from DIM SCENE TOUR which is a ballad, it’s an old song but one of my favorites, or to their newest song BLINDING HOPE but there isn’t a live version. Thank you in advance.

There are many great Babymetal songs that I'm sure me and other fans think you should listen to, but from a pure vocal perspective, I think maybe we should recommend slightly different songs than we normally do. And perhaps we should pick something a bit more recent, so you can hear Su at her very best. I'm thinking maybe "Shanti, Shanti, Shanti", where she does some amazing carnatic acrobatics, or "Shine", with its clear and precise enka singing. Or perhaps "BxMxC" for some surprisingly excellent rap? They are not as iconic as some other Babymetal songs, but still amazing, and probably of greater interest to you.

Respectfully, I’ve seen that video, and it isn’t correct, that’s not how microphones work, you wouldn’t compress a sound to that degree by placing a microphone closer to your nose, microphones as a general rule, always sit under your nose.

I'm about 99.9999999999999999% sure that it's a mic effect. I was even going to make a video placing the mic under my nose like her as some have suggested it's a mic technique, but I didn't want to come accross as petty or mean spirited. But I have a mic under my nose several times a week at gigs, and moving it slightly higher doesn't do anything notable to the sound. I *could* however, replicate the sound by using saturation filters, so i'm choosing that hill to die on :)
