Thank you so much for your video. I purchased the stain from Therma not realizing you could us Minwax. Their video was to rub in and wipe off after 10 minutes. That might work for wood as it absorbes. I waited twice as long and started wiping off but it was leaving white parts so I reapplied and waited 2 1/2 hours. It still left white speckles everywhere which made it hard to see the grain. For the 2nd side I used your technique and it came out so much better. Was also using mahogany but my doors are full panel glass. Tomorrow I will put the polyurethane on the outside. Thanks also for your techniques with the brush strokes.
@RussOlinatzPaintShow10 ай бұрын
Hi Charlie Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah, I would apply with a brush so that you can lay more of it down without wiping away the stain. Are you going to remove the other side? Russ
@charliemcallister307210 ай бұрын
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I am not sure right now. I have it on saw horses and have the exterior properly stained thanks to you. I will poly that side today and then will turn it over and address the interior. Now that it has stain on it I'm not sure if I can stain light enough with the mahogany to still see the grain without removing it.

@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Thanks for the reply. I had to install a storm door before I could take the fiberglass door down to start refinishing, that was finally installed yesterday. I have a Siberian Husky and I need a way to keep her in. Anyway, I ordered a lot of what I will need from your Amazon supply list and waiting for it to come in. I'll post back when I am done. 🙂

My interest in looking for this information is due that I have a polyester door which the original finish was damage for pressure cleaning then staining it with a product that never dried and allowed to collect dust. I will try to use some of your suggested products to clean it prep it and gel stain it. I'll keep you posted. Great video.

I must say I never used old master “gel” stain. However I used their wiping stain. In that you have to use their wood conditioner first then wiping stain. I like how it sets up....

Russ, I wonder what the time and cost was for this amount of work and whether or not it would have been cheaper for the customer to just get a new door? I know that good doors are expensive and this one turned out great, but, it seemed like a lot of work. Thanks for what you do!
@RussOlinatzPaintShow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom Thanks for your questions. I don’t get involved in pricing. There is no need to get a new door. There was nothing wrong with the door. Just that the coating was neglected over the years and was never sealed in the first place. Thus, causing the polyurethane to erode and the stain to be baked into the door instead of lying on the surface. Fiberglass doors are low-maintenance and high-performance; unlike wood or steel doors, durable fiberglass is resistant to cracking, warping, splitting and denting. Russ

Great video! I'm considering taking this approach my front door. I have two questions for you: 1) After staining has completely dried, do you recommend a clear coat? If so, what is it. 2) Can the front door withstand pressure washing without damaging the gel stain? Thanks in advance.
