Stained glass, which refers to colored glass often used for artwork such as mosaic windows, would be the perfect embodiment of “the perfect imperfection.”
It was not intended to be colored at first. People in the Middle Ages lacked technical expertise in improving the purity of glass, which was essential to making it crystal clear. Mineral impurities that were inevitably contained in the process of glass-making are what imparted colors to the glass. For instance, glass with high iron content has a greenish tint.
Stained glass craft is an artwork where small pieces of colored glass are glued together and become decorative objects. By cutting the glass into different shapes and piecing them together, the imperfect pieces are reborn as one perfect piece of art.

스테인드 글라스가 작품이 되기까지
불완전해서 온전해진 것들이 있습니다. 색을 가진 유리인 스테인드 글라스도 그렇습니다.
처음부터 유리에 색을 넣으려 했던 건 아닙니다.
투명한 유리를 만들고 싶었는데, 중세 시대의 기술력으로는 그럴 수 없었습니다. 순도를 높이지 못해 어쩔 수 없이 불순물이 들어갔고, 덕분에 유리에 색이 생깁니다. 예를 들어, 철분 성분이 많아지면 유리가 녹색을 띄는 식이죠.
불순물이 들어가 색을 띈 유리를 조각 조각 이어 붙여, 장식을 만드는 것이 스테인드 글라스 공예입니다. 유리를 자르고 모양을 내는 과정을 거치면, 하나로는 불완전했던 스테인드 글라스가 신기하게도 하나의 작품이 되어 온전해지는 거죠.
