Staining Pine Wood Shelves | Scaffold boards | DIY
This has been a long time coming. I will show you how to make rustic shelves from scratch, this pine wood projects is a great lockdown diy wall decor Idea.
During lockdown this has been a great do it yourself project where you can use wood stain to finish your lovely project.
Do it yourself projects for home decor is definitely a home design trends 2021. Pine wood diy projects are a great woodworking project that will save you money. Pine wood stain is not as difficult as most people think. It is also easy enough to use shelf brackets in this diy project. I did consider trying to make these into floating shelves but it would be too technical. Its safe to say this scaffold board project has been my favourite so far.
The smallest shelve in this video would have cost me £32 on online. I worked out the total value for all the shelves that I made. (rough estimate £150 including the brackets, dye, varnish, sealer and new sander) The great thing about DIY projects is the savings and the fact that any leftovers can be used on other projects in the future.
If I bought the shelves ready made it would have cost me £300+ for the length and quantity I needed.

That wasn’t a belt sander you were using originally, it was just a standard orbital sander. The second one you used was a random orbital sander. A belt sander will take material off much quicker.

@TheMalcolms7 10 ай бұрын
That's correct. I've since learned loads. You have to understand that this was my first time doing something like this 😅 I didn't know what to call the 1st sander but it resembled a belt sander except it's more of a sheet sander. Regardless it was pretty basic and the orbital sander was better. I was definitely a novice when I did this. I have learnt so much more now. Are you doing a similar project? Our shelves are holding up well 🙏

Hey Epic Thanks for watching. This was my first time using the dye so it was a learning curve for me. I didn't want the wood to be too dark as I wanted it to gradually darken over the years. So far they are still looking amazing and still standing on the walls 🙌🏾😅 Are you making some shelves also?
@TMP2064

@@TheMalcolms7 yes I intend to start with some shelves, then table tops amd just keep adding furniture over time all made with old scaffold boards and maybe poles too. Like the idea of a loft bed at some point too. So many ideas just need the wood and time.

@@TMP2064 wow. That sounds amazing to have the whole set. Honestly you can go wrong. The quality will be good and the overall quality to cost ratio will be better than buying it from a store. Plus the added bonus of getting made to measure and the job satisfaction is second to none. I hope to do some more scaffold board projects in the future. I have a few more pressing projects to focus on first. (New roof 😭😅)

I am in the process of making these shelves using a discarded scaffold board (I couldn't believe my luck finding a 13ft board in the alleyway). Anyway I used a damp jeyes/all purpose cloth which helps the Colron dye spread easier. It's my first attempt at woodwork since school in the UK, thanks Kenroy. I'm going to use black iron brackets from Amazon to hang 3 shelves. Your shelves are brilliant.

@TheMalcolms7
@TheMalcolms7 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found it helpful. If you are looking for a more worn and rustic look I would suggest trying to get some used/reclaimed scaffolding boards or timber to match your style (watch out for defects though, nails, warped, holes, cracks and splinters. I would say that I did use new freshly sawn pine boards and you couldn't tell by the time I sanded and stained them that they weren't older. Obviously there will be some difference with aged wood and how it absorbs the dye but that's the charm of it all 😅 Look at me talking like an expert 😂 (I am not) I can say looking at the boards which I also used in a project where I made a walk in wardrobe. The boards look amazing even now. I will perhaps try some old reclaimed boards in the future to see the difference. Please let me know how you get on. Perhaps send me some photos on Instagram if you decide to go through with it. Lastly, make sure the bracket are heavy duty and strong enough to match the size and weight of a loaded shelf, also good size wall plugs and long enough screws. I know it sounds like a no-brainer but it an easy mistake to make 😅 You don't want all your hard work crashing down in the middle of the night 😭 Anyway I'm off to strip wall paper from my living room ☺️

Im in the process of doing this, wish I'd know about sanding sealer before I got to this stage! Also, Im not sure I want a gloss finsh on the shelves! Not sure if to get a raw finish osmo or a slight shine! Any recommendations, the shelves are in an alcove next to a chimney wall that houses an oka fire surround which ive striped the heavy varnish off and want to oil for a more natural look!? Thanks for yr Video.
@TheMalcolms7
@TheMalcolms7 Жыл бұрын
Hey Wendy Glad you enjoyed the video. Well, if you are going to have a natural look on naked wood you have a couple options that aren't that glossy. I would recommend beeswax coating or perhaps teak oil which gives a natural look and makes the wood glow. Just make sure you test it on a scrap piece first to make sure you are happy with the finish. Always a good idea to rest first as the shade can vary depending on the wood and the brand of the product. I'm working on a plant stand project now and I have opted for the team oil and so far it's nice. Far more subtle that the dyes I used on the shelves.

Where did you get the boards and brackets from? What are they called
@TheMalcolms7
@TheMalcolms7 2 жыл бұрын
So the boards are cut from fresh pinewood. I found someone locally who sold 2.5m Length boards. You can buy ones that are used/old (check Facebook marketplace) or brand new ones that are smooth for hardware stores. The brackets I got from eBay. The brackets are rustic but can be painted to your liking. They are good ones beware of flimsy ones. Also check the dimensions of the birds to match the brackets 😅 I will post the Link to the brackets. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Heavy-Duty-Steel-Scaffold-Board-Rustic-Shelf-Brackets-225mm-9inch-Made-in-UK-/372343202967?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
