I build and install railings for a living for over 25 years. Eventually the math about the newel post height makes sense. :) Great job! Love watching you work!

Having done two newel post replacements. Once on one of my own home where I totally removed the original post and using it as a template routed the new one to match and refitted it over two days. Not something I would hurry to do again. And the second for a friend where we had exactly the same situation you have. But what I did was take a third from the three visable faces from the old post (tread side only went halfway) then cut the new one as a cover. This left a very tight strong joint with only one cut line showing. The joint was glued and screwed with the screw holes plugged. Just another way of tackling the problem. But I think your time taken was about correct they are not jobs to be rushed and 30 mins to think about it can be time well spent. I have a feeling I will be following your progress. 😁

Awesome job. I'm moving into a new property that needs updating in many ways and stumbled upon your channel. Perfect inspiration to give it a go myself. Cheers

Can't wait to see the details of the reconstructed stair nosing. I am facing a very similar challenge restoring my 1920 douglas fir staircase from a carpet and paint nightmare.

Working on it at the moment. It is anything but easy and would be somewhat harder if we were leaving exposed timber however the stair joinery down there will be white so a little more forgiving for the joints!

It it something to aspire to but not quite got the time and patience to step it up to that level yet! That said Jesse does have twice the number of kids as us and still manages, so no excuse really! :-)

great result - well done. If dealing with an expensive piece of wood like that newel post, I'd recommend using a piece of 2x4 to gauge the height (measure twice, cut once etc). Also, an mdf template would have made the routing operation more accurate and easier - but I don't want to wisecrack - we all have our own ways of doing things ;)

Funny you say that, I took that route after the first one! Good shout on the MDF, may look at that for the top floor as same issue up there.
@ericlomas5467
@ericlomas5467 7 жыл бұрын
Come to think of it - the MDF option will only work if you either have a set of collars for your router or a flush-trimming bit with a bearing at the top (to follow the template)---hope that makes sense

Like the channel, just subscribed. I do similar work every day lol, never underestimate the importance of simple jigs. They can take a little while to make, but the end results are always a lot better.

I do not envy you this job. Your efforts are very heroic. Good luck with this project. It just occurred to me that this only looks difficult to me and is second nature, easy peesy to you. The mind boggles. 😀

I would probably put a couple of screws on from the top side as well to take some of the sheer force. But still going to be a hundred times better than it was!

Usually we would turn a dowel to the base, cut two Kurfs in to the dowel at 90 degrees and drill another smaller cone dowel within it. Then create a conical mortise and when knocked in the conical shape will tighten itself. Similarly to the way raw bolts work

Nice video. I would have made the bottom newel post slightly different, rather than a half lap i would have taken approximately around 25mm off both sides and a little off the existing post, then made a fancy mortice into the new and slot on top. If that makes sense. This way you could have had the new post all the way to the bottom step and no need to worry about staining or waxing the existing to match.

Something about this project seems off the rail is really pretty but becouse of having a riser going up and direct diaginal down just oppsite means you are missing the most important part. The load weight bearing collems that go from the lowest floor to roof cealing both center and each end.

I'm just curious as to the mentality of the person who thumbed down. Just what exactly were you expecting? I'm wondering if there's a bunch of folk going through YT channels with the sole intent of 'thumbing down' and not actually watching the content. It really is a screwed up world we live in.

It's all fun and games, never really bothers me. Well unless it's within 10 seconds of me posting a video when clearly they haven't even watched the intro! :-) People do seem to be quite demanding considering they don't pay anything to watch the stuff, you should see some of the emails I get it staggers belief!

sometimes KZbin might recommend stuff which is irrelevant to people, the thumbs down is the only way to influence the algorithm. So the actual thumbs down, might actually be from people who are not even interested in DIY, or the video content as it is completely out of their interest zone. Take KZbin Music for example, you have to keep "thumbing" up or down, to influence the next recommended song in your playlist. Hope that makes sense, as it has nothing to do with a "screwed up world we live in" - but just the way KZbin works.
