Renovate Your Mind

4 жыл бұрын

This was my first time making a video and I learned quite a bit about the process. I used "crazy video maker 2" to edit the video segments. This program worked well enough and was free, but I didn't find out until I was all done that it will only export the video in 720p. If I wanted to export it in 1080p I'd have to pay for the full version, so I probably won't use this program again in the future. I also loathe the water mark placed in the bottom right of the video but I couldn't seem to remove it.
In this video I used Home Depot's Cap-A-Tread system for the treads. The white risers were purchased from Menards.

Never ceases to amaze me folks doing these DIY projects with no shoes or sandals on. Power tools, staples, hammers, etc and bare feet...go for it.

Laminate stair treads with a bullnose require actual wood underneath the bullnose, or they'll just snap when someone puts too much weight on the tip. Some manufacture's claim you can do it without, but I'm absolutely not trusting 3/8" of laminate to hold anything.

Beautiful job. I didn't use caulk on mine either and the seams are nice and sharp (if not perfect). But they were so slippery that I added rubber matting on top. I didn't want to ruin the beauty but someone was going to slip fersure.

The thing about table saws, they can grab the wood and throw it back at you. So you always want to keep all body parts, fingers included, on the feed in side. If you reach over the blade and the wood bucks back, you're gonna lose a finger.

excuse all my questions and thanks for getting back, Im trying to learn from you. Did you buy new newel posts for the stairs and paint them? and for the laminate flooring I have the same landing about 16sq ft and I will be using the same laminate for the upstairs entry way, Do you recommend to do an under laminate or just the smoke barrier? and Also what paint did you use for the boards to touch up? Ps. Im fixing up my stairs here in the next week when the treads come in after and after I paint the walls. Thanks for the video.

I did buy newel posts and painted them. It took several coats to get them where I wanted them. I also painted the new handrail. On the landing I used laminate floor with a vapor barrier underneath. I hope things go smoothly for you!

Great video! How are the Cap-A-Tread's holding up? I've been looking at them buy they are getting mixed reviews. Thanks!

Mine have held up just fine. The laminate on the surface is still like new and all the treads are still secured in the same place as when I put them in.

Super job! What material did you use for the risers and what was the thickness? Also, did you consider using caulk where the risers meet the side skirt?
@renovateyourmind
@renovateyourmind Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's been a few years now. I believe the material is melamine and about 1/4 inch thick. I haven't done any caulking but that's a good idea.

@@renovateyourmind Lol, good memory! Thanks, I'm planning to do this exact project in my home, but I can't decide on a riser material. As for the caulk, your finished stairwell looks amazing, it's just as a DIYer crown molding dude, I'm a huge fan of caulk!

Standard screws for securing the stairs?
@renovateyourmind
@renovateyourmind 2 жыл бұрын
I used construction adhesive and a few brad nails. The brad nails were put in at the rear of the treads so the riser would cover them up.

Was it necessary to remove the nose from each stair?
@renovateyourmind
@renovateyourmind 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It's a pain to have to do the extra step (heh heh), but if you don't take it out then the riser won't be plumb and will be leaning out.
@renovateyourmind
@renovateyourmind Жыл бұрын
@@cameroniati2715 if I remember right there is a slot but in my case the nose was thicker than the slot, so I had to cut each one off.

@@renovateyourmind thanks for getting back to me. I loved what you did with the entry way and stairs, and I decided to something similar and purchased treads but unfortunately the railing has smaller 25”-29” wooden balusters so I want to build a new railing. If you have any suggestions on where to get started that would be appreciated.
@georgew.1799
@georgew.1799 3 жыл бұрын
I could not find any iron balusters that were smaller than 40inch
@renovateyourmind
@renovateyourmind 3 жыл бұрын
@@georgew.1799 the balusters I bought were too long too and I had to cut them on the miter saw with a metal cutting blade. Takes time but is pretty simple to do aside from throwing sparks everywhere. Most of the railing is a math problem. Make sure balusters are plumb, spaced 4" apart, and the angle of the railing matches the angle of the stairs.
