Wheeling has/had some of the most beautiful and historic homes around.

We agree, and hope to inspire others to save them. Not just in Wheeling, either. There are great towns and cities all over the country that have beautiful older homes like this

My son lived in an old Victorian that had been carved into 4 one bed units. I’d have given my eye teeth to win the lottery and restore that building to its original grandeur. The stained glass in all but a few windows was just phenomenal.
@ChaplineHouse

We love stained glass! It's true that the more a home is cut up, the more involved the rehabilitation. We chose this house because it was largely unchanged in 140 years. Separating the stairs to create an additional unit, adding a bathroom downstairs, and adding an addition above the back porch for an upstairs kitchen, were the only big renovations that were done over the years. Although the budget is tight and we'll have to take our time, this is a family project and spending time together is priceless :) Yeah, we cut the arguments and squabbling out of the KZbin videos

@@ChaplineHouse Yep. I have a 1960's fixer upper. Bought it for the safe neighborhood. My happiest memories with my oldest son are working on the house, it improved our communication, our thought processes, our growth of patience & some good laughs. One of my qualifiers for a guy being my sweetie is his coping skills while working on projects cause I figure that also shows how'd he react to emergency situations that come up in life. I almost wish working on the house could be a 3rd date type thing for just that reason as it's a great mark of many things about a person.

The storm windows and doors, and the awnings that were here when we bought Chapline House hid many other features and were not attractive. However, we're convinced that we have those elements to thank for the overall great condition of the house. Like everything else (it seems), we've saved the storm doors and windows. We'd love to hear thoughts on what we should do with them. Please let us know

I also live in a historical home,it was built in the year 1900. My staircase has a whole closet covered by a wall and kitchen counter, I also am currently uncovering it. I planned to post the video today, if anyone’s interested in checking that out it is going to be available… I suspect that it is not the original staircase, but that the house was rearranged and that an addition was put on at some point. Because the basement stairs have a very slanted ceiling like they used to be a staircase…🤔 I wonder if the city would have the original blueprints?… I just can’t help but wonder, why would one cover an entire closet? Especially right off of the kitchen, near the entryway. It is quite obviously a coat closet/pantry. And considering the attic has been converted into bedrooms, that storage space is much needed. It’s funny how things can get changed in old houses that, seemingly make no sense at all, haha. I cannot wait to uncover what lies beneath my steps, because that closet is Full. They didn’t even bother to clean it out, lol. And after that, I will be uncovering the original floors. Very exciting, my goodness! I can’t wait to see what condition they’re in and what it will take to refinish them! As of now I can see they are painted, unfortunately… Or maybe, fortunately who knows it’s like Christmas! 😂 Most of the time, I absolutely adore living in an old house! Especially, when I find new/old things and I’m like wow that’s so Amazing! Like, when we first looked at the place, and found that the old cistern room still exists in the basement! It has a hole knocked through one of the walls, and it looks like a dungeon😅 lol I absolutely love it! I have plans on, eventually turning it into a sewing room, potentially. Other times, I dislike living in an old house… especially when I find not so nice, new/old things. For example, the clay pipes that are being attacked by tree roots😰 it’s gonna be an expensive fix. I just hope we don’t have to dig up the entire yard😓… but I wouldn’t change it. I love my old historic, home and being able to personalize it! Being able to raise my family here, and put our own stamp into the history of this beautiful home is what makes it worth it.❤ I hope whatever we end up doing to this house, honors it in the grand scheme of life, because I love this place. From the moment I set foot in this house, I knew it would be mine. 🥰

This is a really interesting project! Just a suggestion in order for you to be able to grow your channel and get more viewers, take some time to edit your shots together in sequence, putting one camera angle of the same event after the another of the same event, even switching between the two. Throwing clips of the same moment from different camera angles one after the other loses the audience's interest. So, try choosing one camera angle first, then you can flip to the next sequential moment using a different angle and then back to the next sequential moment using the first angle, if you like. This will give the viewer a more integrated perspective of what's happening. Unnecessary repetition of the same event, or similar events such as in an earlier video when everybody was getting into their coveralls and raising their arms and walking through the doorway, will unfortunately cause people to lose interest. Please understand, I am not criticizing to make you feel as if you're not doing something right, I am just trying to offer some constructive insights from a film maker's perspective that might help enhance your channel as you're embarking on this adventure! :)

I praise your project of restoring this home to its original form. It seems that you are being very careful in your efforts. I would like to offer a bit of advice. Please cover the wood floors while you are working in those areas that have them. I learned by experience how easy it is to damage them. Walking on debris can cause deep scratches that are difficult, if not impossible to repair. Good luck on your project.

Thanks, that’s good advice. We try to be careful with everything (confessing to a coupe of casualties 😢) But your point that even where the floors are in tough shape - no need to make them worse, is a good one

Could the city have archives with original plans of the older houses?
@ChaplineHouse
@ChaplineHouse Жыл бұрын
Good question. We had hoped for more information from the city and we have looked. Specific records such as design plans do not exist that far back. However, we have been able to review the deeds, which gives us insight into the ownership through the years. Also, Sanford Insurance maps at the Library of Congress have useful information Please let us know here in the comments if you would like to see us make a video on the history of the house

Hubby and I live in France. Our barn dates to the 11th Century. My husband is renovating the insides. The old stone walls and ceiling now have all the charm of the inside of a shoe box. "We're preserving them behind the plaster," he offered. I am sick.
@ChaplineHouse
@ChaplineHouse Жыл бұрын
We like to focus on the good stuff. Rehabilitation, and even renovation, can be part of preserving an old building. A cool old building that looks old on the outside, but is modern and functional on the inside is far better than a neglected one. But we get it when you say you love the stone walls. Hopefully you will wind up with a barn you both love. Please keep us posted

Why are you being so meticulous in removing the gypsum board? Just smash it with your frikken hammer!
@ChaplineHouse
@ChaplineHouse 11 ай бұрын
hahaha, good question. It's always satisfying to just smash down the walls. The answer is that this button board is in sheets, like drywall and comes off in big chunks. This means less of a mess. (Since this is upstairs, we didn't want to get plaster dust everywhere - a lot of the dust will settle down the stairwell). It's also easier to carry big chunks downstairs and out the front door.

Hi Cathy and thanks for your comment. It would be helpful to know which segments of the video you're referring to. Since you're not the first person to ask this question, maybe it would make sense for us to provide a diagram of the wall(s) for those who are interested. This was a complex wall (actually, multiple walls) that was constructed to separate the house into 2 units. It was well constructed, to make it appear at first glance as if it had always been there. This is why we took down the wall in sections, over a period of many months.

With the high cost of housing these days, many younger people wonder if they can even buy a house, much less buy a beautiful old home that is something special. They want to get a house for a good price, spend extra money, and work really hard to make it better than if they bought a ready-made house. Given the possibilities these days of remote work, and the number of great cities around the country that are full of faded beauties; we believe it's possible to find a house that needs saving, fix it up, and make it special. Of course, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and knowing what you want to achieve in the end. But that’s part of the fun! There’s an additional benefit that you can make an impact by building stronger towns and communities and making your community a better place to live. That’s what we’re doing with Chapline House and we welcome you all to join us on this adventure. As always, please share your thoughts, let us know what we're doing right, and what we can improve
