The BIRDS plant black cap raspberries EVERYWHERE on the land! However, often the plants can just grow to be very long canes, flowing in the wind, becoming just a MESS of long THORNY CANES that you can't even walk through, and with little or no fruit! The SOLUTION? Take a stake, a long branch, a piece of wood, a trellis, or anything you can fix to the ground to hold the cane up and steady, so it's no longer flowing in the wind. That same season, (or the following year at the very latest if you do this late in the season), the canes will produce many many short branches that will fill with blooms, and then fruit!

Interesting tip! I didnt stake mine this year, and they aren't producing near as much as they did last year....when I tied them back to the fence and wove new shoots up behind the twine. I know what I'm doing this weekend!

What is black cap raspberries?

They are dense spherical raspberries that start red and ripen to burgundy then black. The birds plant them everywhere. The young cane is a light bluish green and the 2nd year cane is dark purple. Very thorny.

I wonder if this idea is good for other variety of raspberries?

I have thornless, no idea what name. The bloom so gorgeous and put on tons of berries. BUT once the first ripen many of the later berries dry up. I cut a bunch of thee late ones out this year, wondering if that will help. Yes they are staked and yes, the birds start lots of new plants😅

@@diannelegault4719 If they're not giving much fruit, then definitely try this. It makes senses. The can needs support to hold up heavy fruit, otherwise it will fall and maybe get damaged. So it's looking for that support.
