The Stalker and the Professor talk ethics and the possibility of human happiness - as a black Shepherd dog (Alsatian) suddenly appears and wanders about in the colour-changing landscape, eventually appearing to snuggle (?) with the Stalker.

Im convinced the dog is a manifestation of the zone into a neutral entity. The stalker wants to always be with the zone, loves and respects it. The zone rewards the stalker with his true desire to always be with the zone. The zone goes home with the stalker.
