My favorite guest you've had on. I'm 74 years young and love to bow hunt. The overhead limb suggestion is great information. I hate the idea of ever climbing another tree or carrying the stuff needed for such. So much of the stuff on KZbin falls way short of helpful. Thanks for this guest. O, the out in the field content rocks.

Travis is so humble. With a lot of "youtube hunters" I may only believe half of what they preach. But I believe every single word Travis says. Also, that picture with the big buck at the base of that cypress is one of the most epic deer kill pics I've seen.

2:12 - This is a CRITICAL point that everyone who says 'camo doesn't matter' ignores. Yes, the best camouflage is sitting still and not moving. But I haven't yet discovered a way to raise, draw, and aim a bow without moving. Camouflage matters and that doesn't just mean the pattern printed on a clothing.

I’m so close to getting my first deer, and ground hunting w my recurve + ghillie suit makes it about as hard as it gets! I’m thinking these tips around brushing yourself in especially above may help seal the deal.

Last year I was able to take my second buck ever, first archery. Took him from my butt on the ground. I was sitting one night and realized a spot where there was unexpected high activity and saw a big buck chasing does. Was able to brush in the edge of the cornfield overlooking this little 1/10 acre opening. I was successful. It was a rush, mainly because I am not a great hunter and this plan actually worked.

I hunt from the ground in Archery without a blind and have had a lot of success, also got a Tom (12 inch beard gobbler) on the ground with a bow without a blind. I usually try to find a fat tree and i move the leafs and stuff 2-3 feet from all around the tree. When i hear deer coming i get behind the tree from where it’s coming from. Got two bucks in the 150’s off the ground….one was 5 feet away.

That's why I hide inside deadfalls along creek bottoms between major trails and/or funnels. The deer are used to seeing it, so they don't pay any attention to it as they travel past from bedding to food. it's the perfect natural cover blind!

I think overhead cover is great, I just added camo tape to my box blind ceiling recently. I know last week, I had just climbed in and unpacked a box of dingdongs, a big ole spike came in and started chowing at the feeder. No way he would have come in without the ceiling camo with all that movement. Long story short, if I would have sighted in my crossbow, he would be in the freezer! I’ll get him next time hopefully!

I love making and hunting in natural ground blinds made up of logs, branches and treetops. Only my Head is above the blind. Since I may sit dark until dark, I have a stool or a bench.

Great video. The simple, practical instructions were really helpful. It's my first year hunting, and I always feel like I'm either not hidden well enough, or I can't shoot from where I'm hiding. This cleared up that confusion for me.

I take his practice of making an impromptu hide a bit further. A section of Hunter Specialties CAMO LEAF BLIND material is perfect for setting up an ground hide. It weighs nothing and I can get two useful pieces by cutting the 12' length in half. I cut slits around the perimter to enhance the 3D effect and since the material is a synthetic, I can leave it outside so it doesn't collect unwanted odors. I've had deer come within 20 feet more times than I can count.

Setting up on the ground near the known deer travel corridor is my favorite hunt style. Highly camouflaged in a ghillie suit with my face AND hands covered. I’ve used a “ loose leaf “ type coat and pants for years. It’s very light weight and breathable. At 75 years old I am usually sitting on a low profile folding camp stool. It’s so rewarding to take game from being on the ground. Something I really believe in is using the original Scentkiller brand scent destroyer. So many many close ( 10-15 FEET) encounters with deer, coyote, bobcat, pigs etc over years is my reasoning. I nearly caught a turkey once by hand he was so close. Sitting around with your face shining to make videos isn’t the wise thing to do when ground hunting. To be successful every year for many years you need to disappear physically and get your mind in a hunting/ killing mode. Thinking like a predator, IMO, is a huge part of being successful. Just my $.02!

2 days ago I was looking for a tree to climb when a doe group came out of nowhere. I ducked down with nothing but a tiny sapling in front of me and a branch with a few leaves right above my head. They walked within 10 yards and didn’t see me until I tried to draw and got busted by one of them. I might not even bring my saddle into that spot next time, and I just added a ghillie suit to my cart lol

I’d have to agree with Travis, the long bow does give you more versatility and allow you to draw in more positions, but it still has its…..drawbacks 😅

@@thesouthernoutdoorsmen loved it!!! and love y’all guys content, been listening about two to three years now. finally got a show based for southern hunters. I listen to you guys podcast on the way to the woods. very informative and covers many different scenarios, public, private, trophy hunting, weekend warriors and most important the regular working man with limited hunts per season due to working hours. hunting down here in central Mississippi and Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, is different and challenging. But we do have big mature bucks that weigh in high and score high to. I figured most Mississippi guys don’t care about record books so they don’t document hunts and submit deer? thanks for all the hard work you guys put into the show it helps the industry.
