What a show of awesome power by those NS locomotives to get their trains up and down that steep grade on the famous rathole. Three cool trains in all, and one needed help up this grade. Thanks for the same effort u give in making these videos in the same way these locomotives do in keeping their trains moving. Thanks again JT

You know what impressed me most, is train number 2. That sucker was huge!!! And only had 2 loco's on it. Can you imagine the strain on the first coupler after the locomotive? Goes to show just how strong those things are! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Jawtooth. Everytime you are on the "rathole", it reminds me of stories my Mom would tell me. My parents lived in Chattanooga during WW2 and she would take the Southern to Cincinnati to visit relatives. The trains were so packed with soldiers that she stood most of the trip.

Great video, 3 excellent trains. In the UK when a locomotive is called in to assist a train up a hill it is called 'Banking'. The Banker though is not tied on to the train and literally just pushes so that it can drop back when the train no longer needs assistance. It then runs back down the line to the bottom or where it is being stabled.

Remember, what goes up must come down. It’s just as difficult to control it once you crest the hill and get onto the downhill slope. I have worked on the mountain in Altoona around the Horseshoe Curve. If you stall out you need to put the air on right away bc it will start to drag you back down 😮

It must be freaky to be driving an engine and have it stall out on an incline! Have you ever been at Horseshoe Curve? I understand they may add helpers there all the time. A series of videos by you from there would be wonderful. I love it when Norfie and Chessie play gently. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.

Yes, I love Horseshoe Curve. I didn't go this year. I have a really good video of a locomotive with fire coming out of the top of it from Cassandra Pennsylvania which is near Horseshoe.

NS can be found at most anytime on the Horse Curve either with 2 helpers shoving or breaking. I lived in Altoona when STEAM was the big mover & witnessed some of the transition to diesel. I watched the steam locomotive 1361 K4s being placed on the Curve & also helped raise funds for her RESTORATION. I also rode the train to Bellefonte, PA & back on her 1st trip. LOVE STEAM & RAILROADS.

D Raff; FYI; We don’t drive engines, trains, planes, and sometimes boats or ships. We run engines and trains, fly airplanes, pilot boats and ships. But sometimes they call it driving a racing boat or small pleasure boats, and I have heard of driving a submarine, etc. I did not find it freaky at all to stall out on an incline. We usually know it’s going to happen before we start up the grade. But when management instructs us to try it any way, I don’t argue with them unless what they instruct me to do is dangerous. And it’s more of a discussion than an argument. And I know how to win that discussion. FYI A teaching moment: Our only grade was the Huey P. Long Bridge over the Mississippi River just up stream from New Orleans, LA. It has a 1.25% grade and requires 1, yes one, horsepower per ton to make it over the crest. Unless the tonnage is over 10,000 tons and I have 10,000 horsepower I can make it over the crest. But if I had 15,000 tons and 20,000 horsepower I would need pushers, or now they could have DPUs in the middle or on the rear, to get over the crest. The reason is that over 10,000 tons over stresses the knuckle on the rear of the engine. With out pushers, just about the time or jut before the rear of a 15,000 ton train gets on the bridge a knuckle will break somewhere near the head end of the train.

FYI: A teaching moment. The gross weight of each cars is 286,000 lbs. One obtains this number by adding the LT WT (light weight) which is the weight of the car when empty, to the LD LMT (load limit) which is the weight of the cargo inside or on the car. This equals 143 tons per car, for a gross weight of the cars of 12,441 tons. The 111 tons is the load limit. Which is how much cargo the car can carry.
@kasmarj12 жыл бұрын
I counted 88 cars.

I counted 87 grain cars in the first train, 3 engines on the head plus the helper. The mixed freight was about 101 cars pulled by two locos, and the intermodal was 119 cars (about 8 were empty) pulled by three locos. BTW, which way is uphill?
@williamrust39942 жыл бұрын
Back when I worked for the UP, the cargo weight was 100 tons nominal for coal and grain (and potash for that matter). The cars might have a higher capacity but it wasn't used.

Great catch of the NS Grain train! I had to count this bcuz the curiosity was killing me to know how much weight was making them struggle up this hill. I counted 88 hopper cars too. And without knowing the total weight of each car is was going to guess the total being roughly 20million lbs.
@drgwnut2 жыл бұрын
No - that cannot be right. That would work out to 880,000 tons. Four engines up a 1% grade could only pull about 15,000 tons or so. So maybe 170 tons each = 340,000 pounds loaded. According to the internet (which is never wrong) the average grain car LOADED is about 225,000 lbs or 112 tons. So 88 cars = about 9900 tons total. That seems about right. In my neck of the woods, some of the freights struggle when they start approaching 10,000 tons. And that is on flat terrain.

Another beautiful day to be Trackside in the autumn. Even the newest power can't always cut it on stiff grades and sometimes finding a spare crew or engine for push can be difficult. Keeping with the pattern of BNSF and CSX the premiere green trains have the newest cylindrical covered hoppers and this one only had six with the Thoroughbred emblem and the additional 81 cars had the previous livery. So unless there's a major defect these cars can run together for quite a number of trips and often times don't even leave home rails. As for the animal kingdom the Diligent Duck keeps a wary eye on The Crafty Cat. The Feisty Feline tries a Canine leg Clamp followed by a mouth and jaw compression. So with all the wild people out tonight make sure the animals are all safely inside sipping cider. Sand flying in Run 8 with plenty of noise. That's living!

Hello again from the UK. I am surprised that DPUs are not standard on long trains going up hills this steep. During lockdown I watched a lot of American Rail videos including explanations of the DPU Distributed Power Units. When you see locomotives at the front of a long train that is going up hill, the stress of the couplings (or knuckles) in the front portion, is huge as they pull the weight of many thousands of tons up a hill. The whole point of DPUs is that they distribute that stress to two or three parts of the train. This section of track is a candidate for DPUs middle and rear of the train I would have thought.
@brianhickey59492 жыл бұрын
I bet they use a lot of sand on that hill - wow! That second train was so long I was sure there would be a DPU - but no! The same goes for that last train. Amazing - that big hill and they just use a three engine lashup :) Always cool stuff on that hill!
